I will appreciate if someone can give detailed information on the
Bengali version this R.K. Film's production
I have made some conjectures, which may or may not be true.
From early 50s, and just after release of Bimol Roy's DO BIGHA
ZAMEEN,
quite a number of film producers got in to making new- wave social
consciousness
themed films.
M/S Smobhu Mitra and Amit Moitra were well known theater directors
in Calcutta.
They might have staged a play, which became the base for EK DIN
RAATRE / JAGTE
RAHO
Raj Kapoor approached them with an offer to adopt their play and make
a Hindi
film.
The director-duo agreed to this offer, provided they had complete
control on
selection of actors and other artists. That may explain as to how
Salil Choudhury
got the assignment. As per some news stories, after lot of
persuasions by Raj
Kapoor. they agreed to let Nargis enact the final song - Jaago Mohan
Pyare.
To the best of my knowledge, very few of R.K. Film's technicians
(Cinematographer,
Art Director, Editor etc.) were used in producing this film. The
film might have
been shot in Calcutta.
The Questions I have are:
1 Is the above quote info. correct ?
2 Were the Hindi and Bengali versions produced together ? If not,
when was the Begali version released
3 Name of the actors / actresses of Begali version and the name of
artists who enacted corresponding roles in Hindi Version.
4 And most important item - Information on songs and whether they
were
similar to one for Hindi version. I am aware of Bengali versioj
of - Jaago
Mohan Pyare, which is 'Jaago Mohan Preetam', which is exactly
same
as Hindi version for music composition (The song is available on
Lata,
as well as Salil Chowdhury's Compilation CDs / Tapes)
I have some reservations though - Kabir ji might not have 'Bahao
Aanso' for
Rangi / Narangi Khoya and Chalti Gaadi and Mauji
Sardar ji might
not have asked - Main Koyi Jhooth Boliya
I am almost certain that 'Losh Ae Bye Bye' - the song as well as
it's
picturization was done exactly the same way, as in Hindi version
'Thandi Thandi Sawan Ki Phuhaar' may also have redone almost
identical to
Hindi version
5 Was the Bengali version successful ? The Hindi version was a
flop. Even
after winning an international award, it never gained popularity.
It was only after the introduction of VHS tapes in early 80s, that
general public
started watching this and some other great but commercially
unsuccessful
films, including Kaagaz Ke Phool, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam,
Parekh .....
Thanks
Sudhir
The Bengali version EKDIN RATRE was released on 14/8/56.
The film has been classified as a SUPER HIT.
Motilal's role was played by Chhabi Biswas and the starting song
(ZINDAGI KHWAB HAI in Hindi) was EI DUNIYAY BHAI SABI HOI in Bengali
by Manna Dey.
Bombay artistes like Nemo, Daisy Irani, Iftiqar, Sulochana Chatterjee,
Moni Bhattacharya and of course NARGIS were in the Bengali version
also.
Sumitra Devi, Pradeep Kumar and Smritirekha Biswas who acted regularly
in Bengali films were in the Bengali version also.
I have not seen the Bengali version, but there were a number of songs,
where lyricists were salil Choudhury and shailendra.
The playback artistes included Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar, Sandhya
Mukherjee, Mohammad Rafi.
To the best of my knowledge and belief the two versions were shot
together.
The end was the same.
Thanks.
Jyoti Prakash Guha.
