RMIMer Sanjeev Ramabhadran has won the TVS Sa Re Ga Ma competition held on
Zee TV and hosted by Sonu Nigam. As UVR put it in a mail this is a very
proud moment for RMIM. Maybe it is time for UVR, Ramesh, Pankaj, Anup,
and Pradeep to try their luck and bring more glory to this group.
Then we might have threads like
Classical music and pathetic XYZ :-)
BTW guys work on your pronounciation otherwise we might have a re run of
the "kheti" episode :-)
regards
Anand
Arey itna bhi nahin samajhey! do KKKlaners hi teen Rafians par bhaari pad

Looks like you were busy making cartoons of Rafi, Gulzar and Azharuddin
instead of taking some serious notes during the seminar series offered
by SADSACKS :-) else you would have learnt this by now!

Is there a way of getting the vedio recordings of all his rounds?
who were the judges? any idea?
It really is a tough competition. Congrats to Sanjeev.

Judge in the final was Anil Biswas. I saw the first part. Couldn't see second
as I had to catch a train :-( In the first round he sung (if I remember
correctly) all but one? Rafi songs (after all he is RAFIan). He sung competition
song of Baiju Bawara to start with in the first round. Anil-da asked him if he
knows the raag and came the prompt reply: Desi (or Des)

Greetings:
Thanks, for spoiling it for me..:-)
I had followed him from Pre-lims, to Semis on tape and would have
watched the finals
in great interest, shortly!
He started off slowly in prelims but sang extremely well in the semi's.
He seems to pick songs
which are very difficult to sing (not very obvious that they are
difficult, but nonetheless are).
Congratulations, Sanjeev, if you are reading this. Thank you, too, we
spent quite an enjoyable
time watching the tapes.
Peace,
Arun

Desi and Des are not the same raag; Desi comes from Asavari thaat and
Des from Khamaj.

Thanks Snehal. I watched quite a bit of TVS saregama. Never saw
any one singing KK's songs though!!. :-).
This is a long overdue thanks to you RMIMers that helped me pool some
information together regarding the show, so I could submit an entry. I had
lots of fun, and got to meet some highly respected musicians (who came as
judges) and some talented people in my age group (participants). I'll
probably go back for the "Mega-Final" which I think will be in March/April
'98.
Thanks very much again for your input, and see you guys around on RMIM.
Sanjeev (so what if it's the most cloned name on RMIM :-) )

Should I read this as
1. TVS Sa Re Ga Ma is tough quiz
2. All participants are good singers
3. They all sing Rafi songs but not KK's
Hence, KK songs are much more tough to sing even by good singers, hence ... :)

The observations are correct but not complete. Here is a logical
explanation.
1. TVS Sa Re Ga Ma is tough quiz
2. All participants are good singers
3. All participants *want* to win, it is extremely competitive.
4. Singing decently well, the songs that are extremely difficult
to sing, will give them an edge over the other singers who sing
simple songs.
5. They all sing Rafi songs but not KK's
: Hence, KK songs are much more tough to sing even by good singers, hence ... :)
Now, what is the conclusion again? :):)

Your statement # 4 and # 5 taken together say, that each participant sings the
difficult songs, thinking this will give him an edge over those who sing the
simpler songs. Which means that each participant thinks that the songs he has
sung are the toughest, while the songs sung by others, even if they too are
Rafi's songs, are simpler. Now since all of them sing Rafi songs, if you take
everyone's opinion of the songs that everyone has sung, and club them together,
it therefore follows that all Rafi songs, are the simplest to sing. :)

Conclusion 2:
For the record, I've watched plenty of Sa Re Ga Ma episodes (some of them
live of course) and I'd say that the ratio of Rafi songs to Kishore songs
is about 5 to 3 (I know that's a little to precise to be believed, but
that's a rough estimate).
Sanjeev
OR,
How about:
Good singers PREFER to sing Rafi songs !! :-)))

Aiming low is also allowed in all contests; so this should be no problem! :))
Snehal

Refer to point # 1 above: Sa Re Ga Ma is a tough quiz !!
So your observation (about aiming low) is in direct contradiction !!
:-))
That would imply that it was recorded long back. Anilda was talking
about it when I had met him last November and about someone called
Sanjeev (he didn't remember the last name) who had won it. He was
very impressed by his singing and said he had pretty much decided
on him as the winner from the first song itself.
He referred to "Sa Re Ga Ma" while talking about music in the 30's
and 40's and said he was constrained by the singers in that period
and MD's in that period could have given better music if they had
the current crop of singers and went on to talk about Sanjeev and
others he saw in "Sa re ga ma".
