I am little biased towards the golden period of Hindi film music (ie
50s,60s and early 70s) as is quite evident from my list. I would love
to post a Lata TOP 100 list at a later date.I have not considered
Duets in the above list. In TOP 100, I must consider some exquisite
duets of Lataji. Now the ball is in your court to add or to omit or to
post your own list.
Cheers
Paddy (Age 29)
How is it that Lata;s Top 10 does not have a single song of Anil
Bishwas ?
And I feel that it is meaningful only if Top 100 or in case of Lata
Top 300 list is prepared.
My knowledge of Anil Biswas songs is very limited. I can remember 3
great songs composed by him: Mera bulbul so raha hai (Kismat 1943),
Dil jalta hai (Paheli nazar 1945) & Sine mein sulagte hai arman
(Tarana 1951). The last song was by Lata & Talat, but I did not
include it in my list becoz it is a duet.
As I said I would compile a Top 100 list. But it will take time.Maybe
years.Meanwhile if u can compile a Top 100 or Top 300, plz share with
us.
Cheers,
Paddy
Why does he HAS to be there ? Or for that matter any one in particular.
While it is much appreciated to enlighten us with the knowledge of your age,
I truly feel that age is irrelevant for enjoying or appreciating the good
and best things in life. If at age 29 you love such old songs, it speaks a
lot for you taste. I know of some 35yrs old people whose choice, the least
said the better. After all, we all are entitled to our favourites and likes
and dislikes.
Arty
List is very impressive considering your age.
AJ
Most of what you have said is also applicable in my case. I think
considering that we are talking about Lata, it certainly has to be top
100 at-least. I made up this list some time back, so just posting
here. Solos considered only except chorus voices.

Jokes aside, which Lata-Anil Biswas combinations are you acquainted
with?
Sanjeev
It does not matter. Including songs like :
Chhod De Saari Duniya Kisi Ke Liye (SaraswatiChandra 1968 )
Mere Ghar Aayi Ek Nanhi Pari (KabhiKabhie 1976 )
... in Lata's Top 10 or Top 100 or Top Anything is a sign
of stupidity. Even Suman Kalyanpur must have sung dozens
of songs better than the infantile 'nanhi pari' stuff.
Right! Let me shove some humour up RMIM's arse and
up your er... (sorry) brains.
> Chhod De Saari Duniya Kisi Ke Liye (SaraswatiChandra 1968 )
>
Lata has sung this song as if she is a ganda-bandh shagird
of Mahendra Kapoor, assuming that she has 'sung' it at all.
Dear Saket-ji,
Thanks for your list. The greatness of Lata-bai is truly reflected in
the fact that even after going through one hundred carefully selected
songs by you, it will not be unduly difficult to generate a almost non-
exclusive list of another 100 without getting many eyebrows raised. It
also highlights the fact, how almost all composers reserved their best
outputs for Lata-bai. She was perhaps the safest bet (in consistency)
for doing complete justice to the tune that the composer had worked so
hard on.
On your score tally for composers, the 'zero' against Anil Biswas'
name does seem a tad harsh. Especially when there are quite a few
songs of the early 50-s that find a place in your list. The wonderful
site www.indianscreen.com has a lot of songs of Anil-babu currently
uploaded and I'm sure that if you reconsider some your choices, a song
from Tarana, Naaz, Pardesi, Aaraam, Fareb, Chaard Dil Chaar Raahen may
creep in. :)
I also noticed the absence of Sajjad Hussain in your list. That seemed
interesting as well. :)
Regards,
Archisman.
Thanks for your words, though I must say I didn't try explicitly to do
any balancing act !

I am listing a few -
tumhare bulaane ko (Ladli)
luuTaa hai zamaane ne (Dorahaa) after Vijay ji told me this movie had
some good music
yuu.N chhup chhup ke (Tarana)
unhe ham jo dil se (Arzoo)
man me.n naache man ki (Beqasuur)
hue unase naina chaar (Beqasuur)
Must have heard some more from time to time, but since I only keep/
collect songs that I like don't have them now. At that time I didn't
even knew who is the composer for that matter, but never liked
anything that later turned out to be AB (except a few ... but no Lata-
AB solo there)
Also, I have to repeat, though by now I can recognise by looking at
most of the stuff I like, who is the composer, I try not to let that
affect my decision. It might work from sub-conscious :)
And, yeah, if you think I have missed some here, I'll be glad if you
can list some yourself (say 10 best AB-Lata) even 5 would do.
-S
undoubtedly, I'd say 200 isn't difficult, rather easier, since one can
keep so many more & no need to go through the rather harsh process of
filtering out some great compositions !

yeah, interesting. what is also interesting is that people do want to
see a lot many MD's getting representation :) I do like some other
MD's surely, but if none of their Lata solos can replace Tumhi Mere
Mandir, really not much I can do.
You must have noticed though, how my list sort of took care of Ravi
Shanker, Sudhir Phadke, N.Datta etc. It happens that way I guess, some
get it some do not !
I'd certainly be more concerned towards scores of SJ/Anna/Naushad/Dada
Burman melodies missing out that AB/Sajjad. IMVHO.
cheers
S
tell you what, I can replace Ye Zindagi with 'Mohabbat Aisi Dhadkan',
but 'Mujahse Mat Puuchh' is the best IMO from this movie.

the same effect 'dil kii lagii hai kya ....' had on me. I have listed
to this number repeatedly many a times likewise.

sad offcourse !! why we are talking about the Salim-Anarkali story
certainly :)

You may already know the songs I inserted below, and I myself don't
know the entire Lata-Anil Biswas anthology despite my disagreement
with the exclusion of AB from any Lata Top 100 Solos list.
> tumhare bulaane ko (Ladli)
> luuTaa hai zamaane ne (Dorahaa) after Vijay ji told me this movie had

"Beimaan Tore Nainwa" from the same movie.

"Kahaan Tak Ham Uthaayen Gham" from the same movie.

> hue unase naina chaar (Beqasuur)
Songs of Aaraam (e.g. "Man Men Kisi Ki", "Baalamva Naadaan") have been
alluded to elsewhere on this thread. I like the solo from Jalti
Nishaani, "Rooth Ke Tum To Chal Diye", as well as "Baras Baras Badli"
from Gajre. Anokha Pyaar also has "Yaad Rakhna" and (IIRC) "Mere Liye
Vo Gham-e-Intezaar Chhod Gaye".
> And, yeah, if you think I have missed some here, I'll be glad if you
> can list some yourself (say 10 best AB-Lata) even 5 would do.
Not sure about 10-best or 5-best (see my earlier comment). However,
it's one thing to say "I don't know the Lata-AB combo well and
therefore there are no such songs in my list", another to say "I have
heard the majority of Lata-AB combos and they do nothing for me", and
yet another to (rather cursorily and flippantly) "zero" him out.
Sanjeev
Excellent additions. I suppose you wanted to limit your select-
ions for these years. Otherwise a few more can be added. This
is, of course, as per my choice :
Nirala : Aisi mohabbat se hum baaz aaye
Tarana : Woh din kahaaN gaye bataa
Aaraam : Man men kisi ki preet basaa le
--Do-- : Mil mil ke bichhaR gaye nain, gaya sukh chain
Ada : Tori saaNwari surat man bhayi re pia
Hum Log : Chali ja, chali ja, chhoR ke duniya
Nagina : Kaisi KHushi ki hai raat
Mayurpankh : KHushiyoN ke chaaNd muskuraaye re
Patita : Kisi ne apna bana ke mujh ko
Amar : KHaamosh hai khewan~haar mira
Do-- Jaane waale se mulaaqaat na hone paaii
Uran Khatola : Haal-e-dil maiN kya kahooN
Yaasmeen : Bechain karne waale
I have limited my selections to films listed by you.
Also, I have excluded chorus songs.

I really do not analyze where Lata has made best effort or such thing,
the overall effect of Ghadi Ghadi would surpass all that I have heard
of AB.

I agree, it was by mistake that I listed 'Milaa Hai Kisi Ka" from
Parakh.
I think due to some selection error in my excel sheet !! O sajna is
surely there right at the very top. Thanks !

oh those oldies ! they do floor people from any age I'd say .
courtesy indiascreen.com, I have heard most of the above listed,
didn't excite me at all.
You know what, earlier most of the times I never knew who is the md of
a particular song I heard anyway & still not many of AB's compositions
made their way to my collected songs (for whom I later find all the p-
stats). That's the way it has been, it's only very recently that i was
sort of attacked for not choosing any AB score in my 100 best scores
list & I thought ....hmmm so what's with this AB business.
Anyway.
> Not sure about 10-best or 5-best (see my earlier comment). However,

oh you are also taking offense for not offering AB his 'due' (supposed
to be), well that comment at the end of the list was just funny not
supposed to rub the wrong way, except to that fool dn ! (& relevant to
only those who were part of 100 best scores drama I guess)

Srinivas.
Saket,
Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with AB not figuring in in your
Top 100. That's a matter of personal taste. For example, very few SJ
and SDB songs make it to my list of Lata Top 100. Being a recent AB
convert myself, I would say that it might be wothwhile to hear some of
the delightful output of the AB-Lata combo. If even after that, you
don't like those songs, fair enough.
Here are some of my AB-Lata favorites by year, many of which make it
to my Lata Top 100.
1948: Ek Dil Ka Lagana (Anokha Pyar), Mere Liye Wo (Anokha Pyar),
Baras Baras Badli (Gajre), Ghar Yahan Basane (Gajre)
1949: Tumhi Kaho Mera Man (Girl's School), Mast Pawan Hai (Jeet),
Tumhare Bhulane Ko Jee (Ladli)
1950: Aayi Bhor Suhani (Beqasoor), Jana Na Dil Se Door (Arzoo), Ek
Mera Dil (Lajawab)
1951: Badli Teri Nazar (Badi Bahu), Man Mein Kisi Ki Preet (Aaram), Wo
Din Kahan Gaye (Tarana)
1952: Ghadiyan Gini Hain Maine (Doraha)
1953: Annkhon Mein Chitchor Samaye (Mehman), Mila Dil (Fareb), Tere
Sab Gham (Hamdard), So Gayi Chandni...Tum Mujhe Aur Bhi Yaad (Aakash),
Ik Pal Ruk Jana (Raahi)
1954: Allah Bhi Hai (Maan), Aankhon Mein Dil (Naaz), Jhilmil Sitaron
Ke Tale (Naaz), Katti Hai Ab to (Naaz)
1956: O More Ranjhna (Heer)
1957: Rooth Ke Tum To Chal Diye (Jalti Nishani)
1959: Intezaar Aur Abhi (Chaar Dil Chaar Rahen)
1962: Ja Main Tose (Sautela Bhai)

A lot of these songs will probably end up in my top Lata list - if at
all I would attempt it.
There was some talk about the best song in Anarkali in this thread -
for me "mujhse mat pooch" is not just the best song in Anarkali, but
the best Lata-CR song ever. This considering how much I love the Lata-
CR combo. In my top 100 list at least one quarter of the songs will
belong to this combination, if not more :)
Cheers
Impressive list! But there is one song you missed - jaa mein tose
naahin bolun (Sautela Bhai). This is definitely one of the most
challenging songs she has ever sung. And that's what sets many Anil
Biswas-Lata songs apart from her songs with other composers!
Welcome to the club, Aditya!

My list did include Ja Main Tose Nahin Boloon!
Shalini,
...and who gets the credit for my exploration of Lata-AB combo?
Remember that discussion that happened on Baradwaj Rangan's blog maybe
6-7 months back?
Thank you!
Aditya
Ooops! :-) That's what happens when one doesn't sleep well! :-)
>How about doing a desert island sort of exercise for Lata's songs at
>the weekend's meet ??
I hereby nominate an L-P composition as my current Lata desert island song. This
is for all those who think Lata couldn't/wouldn't sing rock-n-roll Asha type
songs. Note my reference to "blind tests" and "sending their dholak wallahs to
the gulag" in an earlier post. Now go see/listen to "De Taali" from Gehri Chaal
on YouTube. The way Lata drops her voice to sing the "Main janoo, tu jaane..."
line is well..interesting. And there is an equally good if not better song by
Asha in this movie too.
Did I mention music is by L-P: Who woulda thunk?
Ketan
I may be old fashioned (actually I'll admit I am), but the best rock-n-
roll type of songs (at least fast-temp songs) sung by Lata remain: Dil
se mila ke dil and Ae meri zindagi aaj raat jhoom le (both from Taxi
Driver, 1954, SD Burman) and Ar re ... main to giri re giri re giri re
(Post Box 999, 1958, Kalyanji Veerrji Shah).
On other matters, Lata has sung far too many beautiful songs, so much
so that I'll be hard pressed to list her best 1000 songs. In summary:
up to 1960, 80% (give or take some) of her songs were beautiful, the
percentage dropped to about 60% for the period 1961-1965, to 40% for
the period 1966-1970, and to somewhere around 5%-10% after 1970. She
should have gracefully retired sometimes in early seventies and spend
the rest of her life living on her laurels.
Narsingh
May be he has listened to it only 2/3 times.
OR may be one has suffer sadness in one's own life time, to sense
sadness in a song.
For me, Dua Kar Gum E Dil....brought tears to my eyes even when I was
10 years old.
ArchiDa:....One surprise, did you forget Anokha Pyar? All the 4 of
them?

Just 4? Lata has sung seven solos for Anokha Pyar. A couple
of these songs, the ones filmed on Nargis, were sung by
Meena Kapoor for the film's soundtrack.
