Chitrahaar - 15 Paani Paani Re

Renu Thamma & Neha Desai

Answers & Results
======================================

At long last, the much awaited results for the Chitrahaar - 15
are here. A number of people had been wondering about the fate of the
quiz (or their fate in the quiz), to the extent that some had begun
worrying about whether the results had turned true to the theme of the
quiz --- "paani paani re". :) Unfortunately, we got stuck with the
usual 'unavoidable circumstances' that prevented a timely output of the
results (no, neither of us went on a Carribbean cruise or exploring any
other waterbodies for the sequel to the quiz). And since time flows
even faster than the waterfall showering Mandakini, it was already a
month by the time things got under control. Of course, your incredible
enthusiasm in participation also helped in adding to our grading
burdens, but for that we can only be exultant. Thank you all for making
this Chitrahaar the most popular quiz ever on RMIM, and even more so for
the (almost) infinite patience with which you chose to bear with us.
Also, sincere apologies for the inordinate delay in posting the results.

First and foremost, we had no prior inkling of the volume of
participation this quiz has generated --- we received 81 entries with a
total of 109 participants (this has also made us realize that we are not
cut out to be school teachers --- 81 papers check karte karte hi thak
gaye). The "paani" theme was overall quite appreciated by all, though a
number abstained from competing for the Geography Award. :)

A special word of thanks to our friends and supporters who stood
by us during the making as well as grading of the quiz, and to the
anonymous beta testers for not telling us how easy this quiz was. :)

========================================================================

Thank you everyone for taking the time to send in your generic and
song-specific comments. All your compliments are well appreciated and
all complaints have been registered. Whether we plan to do anything
about them is left to the prudent reader to guess, but we registered
them alright! :)

Please note that in the following, the quiz masters' comments ascribed
to 'I' are by Renu and those credited to 'Neha' are by Neha. All other
host comments are attributed to 'Hosts'. :)

We got a lot of flak for including a Kumar Sanu song. So? Shoot us!
:) Almost everyone got it right! And yes, our partiality to RDB and
Gulzar was quite obvious, wasn't it? In the case of Rafi vs KK, I
sneaked in more of KK while Neha was busy clarifying which side of the
war she was. :) In the case of Asha-Lata, although there is a larger
number of Lata songs in the quiz, I felt that the Asha songs included
were some of the best songs of the quiz, so no complaints there. :)

Here are some of the participants' comments. We have included most of
them un-edited since there were some interesting questions raised by
some of the participants that we too would like to know the answers to.
So here we go ---

Nuts: Very good Chitrahaar. I really enjoyed this, and it was fun
trying to hunt down clues. I took much longer than the stipulated 10
minutes, but didn't mind wasting time, for a change. *grin* I thought
some of the clueing was redundant, but I'm sure there will be others
who'll think any clueing is redundant. Good song selection. The
waterbody theme is interesting, but after a while one sees too many seas
(ha ha ha).

My initial fear was that I would get an embarrassingly small percentage
of the answers. Actually, I think I did reasonably well though I don't
expect to be among the winners. However, with a quiz like this,
participating is most of the fun. Congratulations!

Anup: Thank you very much for this great quiz. I liked your idea of a
waterbody quiz though it was too taxing (esp. considering my limited
mental capacity :) trying to remember the name of waterbody for every
song.

What I liked about this quiz ---

1. THEME. The background of water always enhances the beauty of the
song (IMO)
2. Great clues (in most cases :) I really enjoyed the write-up.
3. Due importance to KK, Gulzar and RDB. :)

What I didn't like about the quiz ---

1. Not enuff clues in new songs like songs of Dil Hai ki Manta Nahin,
Jaanbaaz etc and too many or may be it looked like for great songs of
Khushboo, Abhimaan, Manzil etc. 2. Hey trying to remember the name
of and song itself is enuf don't ask us the guess waterbodies etc.
:))

Balaji & Malini: Great chitrahaar'ish theme. Good selection of songs.
However the geography award seems a little dubious especially asking
people to name the waterbody. The reason being many a time what appears
is not what it is, e.g. RJGK - 35 song 'ga.ngaa aaye kahaa.N se' was
filmed against a backdrop of rover Hoogly. One could argue about that.
But in another case, 'mera naam raju gharaanaa anaam, bahatii hai
ga.ngaa jahaa.N meraa dhaam' has actually been picturised at the river
Narmada. So would you mark Narmada wrong? Or if you are strict, would
you mark Ganga wrong? There could be numerous such examples. But
hopefully such doubts wouldn't arise in this quiz :)

[Hosts]: And hopefully they didn't. We gave points for the mention of
a river, since mentioning the name of the waterbody was optional.

Rajiv: .. Mainly I'm doing it because its fun; also because its
another entry to add to your tally. :-) In any case, the topic of your
quiz is novel; that's good. And the combination of clues is quite
irreverent to status and stature of songs on RMIM which I liked even
more. Thanks. I had an enjoyable hour trying my hand at these
questions.

Pradeep: I have seen very few movies so I normally find it very hard to
participate in Chitrahaar quizzes ... yes I know I should be bolder
than that ... Anyway, there is simply too much G all over in your quiz
and thus it is impossible to stay out ... Needless to say: fantastic
selection of songs !!

I almost drew a big zero in your geography test. That's nothing new for
me, as this was the most boring subject for me after enginerring drawing
and non-physical chemistry. :-)

Kalyan: Personally I find the quiz leaning a lot towards newer movies
and RDB predominates. Didn't other MDs have water-body songs in their
movies that you were forced to pick so many songs from one MD and worse
- a song sung by by RDB :) However the predominance of new songs should
have helped in the record number of entries.

[Hosts]: Hey RDB sings fairly well! You don't agree? Go talk to
Rizwan! :) And yep, other MDs did have water-body songs in their
movies so we weren't *forced* to pick songs from RDB films. It was a
conscious choice. :)

Ikram: Keep the RDB flag flying :) .. Also I strongly protest over
the non-inclusion of the Madhubala-swimming pool song. No... she
doesn't wear the costume... but she is *there*... [Mr. & Mrs. 55 -
thandi hawa kaali ghata]

[Hosts]: Sorry Ikram. We truly overlooked that song. Maybe next time?

Arunabha: Excellent clues and songs ... most agree with my choice of
favorites ... esp. including the opening lines to 'do lafzon ki hai'
lent an authentic touch... All in all a terrific quiz: you must be
highly commended !

Madhu Sudan & Aniruddha: About the quiz, the theme is ummmm ..
'interesting' :-) I am sure there are thousands (not hundreds) of songs
that you have missed. But keeping the theme in mind, that can't be
avoided. The clues gave us enough hints to come up with the answers.
So no complaints about the toughness of the quiz. Of course, your bias
towards the 'king of khaali bartans' is obvious :) but that's okay.
Like the idea of guessing the water-body name. Would really refresh the
geography of the participants. Could have called it 'Geo-Chitrahaar' or
something like that! :)

Punit Oza: Let me congratulate you on conducting one of the most
imaginative and beautiful chitrahaars.

Vandana: Thanks for a great quiz! I loved your choice of songs, for
the most part, especially the first one! :) :) I find it hard to
believe that both of you came up with the great quiz in a matter of a
few weeks. Kudos to you!

Kuntal Shah: Found it very easy. May be I have paying special
attention to "paani" songs. :-)

Neeraj & Prince: .. it was quite enjoyable as it added an extra
criterion to judge on without increasing the complexity or the effort
needed. Ideal!

Deepak Gothe: You quiz is beautiful. The style in which clues are
provided is excellent.

Dost-dushman: Keep up the good work! N'joyed the quiz and this way got
a chance to watch a few drenching songs.

Chetan: Thanks for having stepped in to bridge (what water-body does
this bridge go over?) the gap between two Chitrahaars. It was an
admirable effort, given the short time !

.. The songs were too much beyond my domain. The period covered in
this quiz does not do justice to the theme itself. IMO, you could have
stretched the interval backwards to cover at least some of the golden
years. Even if I may know many of the songs, I don't like all of them.
There is also a strong RD bias (and perhaps a Gulzar bias) which makes
the clues unidimensional. For instance, you could have avoided one (or
maybe both) Khushboo song(s). Please register my protest !!

Interestingly, after I had accepted the interval of your choice, one
song that came to mind was "(I forgot the words)" from QSQT. The lead
pair go to a a well, pull water from it and take their showers. Has the
well been covered in your quiz? And I am sure there must have been some
trasitional cases - like a bore well. Was it featured in the "kaun
aaya?" song from Katha?

[Hosts]: Ikram also mentioned the QSQT song. Once again, we overlooked
it or else would have included it, especially since the well would have
had inclusion in the quiz. As for the Katha song - I think the borewell
shows up in the 'kya hua kya hua?' song too, but neither of the two
songs are popular hence we didn't include them.

Anil Ubale: It is an interesting quiz - but a few songs I would not
call popular e.g. the Vansh and Khoon Bhari Maang songs. And yes -
many other beautiful waterbody-in-the-scene songs can find place in this
Chitrahaar - which I guess will be discussed in the newsgroup in the
days to come.

Subu & Vanitha: Really enjoyed taking a crack at your quiz. We
discovered the Chitrahaar quizzes recently and this is the second
Chitrahaar quiz in which we are participating. Much as we love the
melodies in old songs, we have difficulty associating the picturization
of a song with the actual song in itself (growing up in the south, we
did not see much Hindi Chitrahaar :-( so a quiz like yours which does
not have too many B&W era songs (in fact I guess there is just one) is
easier to take a shot at for people like us. Also being huge fans of
the RDB-Gulzaar-Asha trio did help. Thanks for providing an hour of
enjoyment and memories and sorry for the digressions.

Peeyush: Thanks for the nice quiz, it was fun solving it.

Rajesh Munshi: This is indeed a very interesting theme and I really
enjoyed solving it.

Umang Bali: .. I must say this was a great quiz. The songs (most of
them) were from my era, and so I had a lot of fun.

Ambrish Sundaram: Neat compilation. But did you really have to include
the racy :-) songs from Vansh, Jaanbaaz, Khoon Bhari Maang etc.? :-) I
guess, *that* is the compiler's license, compiler's choice, call it what
you want !!! So I won't say more. :-)

I see that you have included more songs from the 70s and 80s. That is
indeed a variation. What with most of the Chitrahaars and RJGKs
concentrating on the 50s and 60s, it looked like RMIMers (I am as guilty
of this as anybody else) may have a memory lapse when it comes to the
existence of music in the 70s and 80s. Albeit not top-notch (IMHO), I
guess some of the songs of this period do merit some mention.

[Hosts]: As for the racy songs --- we didn't want to be too far behind
Pavan and Ravindra as far as steamy scenes in quizzes went. :) But
once again with their RJGK-38, the RaVan-team has become the undisputed
kings as far as organizing x-rated quizzes go. But hey, we tried! :)

========================================================================

Here are the answers once again, this time accompanied by the
song-specific comments of the participants. We have not provided
P-stats here to curb the length of this already lengthy post. Also, the
sheer bulk of compiling statistics from 81 entries scared us off
generating the song-wise statistics, so let us assume that everyone got
every song correct (well, almost). :)

1.
We start the quiz with the song that everyone expects this quiz to
start with. At least we would like to think so. :) This movie,
directed by Gulzar stars Jeetendra and Hema as the lead stars. In the
song in question, Jeetendra is on a boat on the water-body and Hema is
standing on the shore nearby. Kishore sings a soulful solo to R D
Burman's music. 'nuff said? :)

Song: o maajhii re, apanaa kinaaraa,
nadiyaa kii dhaaraa hai ...
Movie: Khushboo
Water-body: River

Anup: You can't have a better beginning than this, KK/Gulzar/RDB. :)

Archana, Manishee & Pankaj: No surprises here, entirely predictable :-)
If you don't get 100% hit rate on this, I'll be surprised!!

Balaji & Malini: Guess with the two of you conducting this quiz, this
song had to be there :) ?

[Hosts]: Of course! :) If we could have only Gulzar-RDB songs in the
quiz, we'd have happily done it. :)

2.
Amitabh is visiting his Durga Mausi and hears a shiv-stotra being sung
by someone. The next day he sees Jaya Bhaduri filling water next to a
water-body and singing this song. Enthralled by her voice he watches
her, chupke-se. At the end of the song he talks to her for the first
time and S D Burman, this Lata solo gives no indication of the 'pride'
battle that takes place later.

Song: nadiyaa kinaare heraayii aayii kanganaa
aise ulajh gaye anaaDii sajanaa ...
Movie: Abhimaan
Water-body: River

Rajiv: The shiv-stotra is by Anuradha Paudwal, as someone already
mentioned on RMIM. Her husband was asst. to SDB and she was asked to
fill in at the rehearsal for Lata by singing the stotra. SDB was so
impressed w/ the result that he kept her version, although a version was
recorded w/ Lata as well. Anuradha didn't know about her song being
included until the album was released.

Nuts: You might've also mentioned that Amitabh needs _three_ playback
singers in the movie to encompass his entire range of talent. *grin*

[Hosts]: Interesting. Never noticed that KK, Rafi and Manhar sang for
Amitabh.

3.
Raj Kapoor and Nargis made an awesome pair. Here they are on a boat on a
water body one night each making a different request to the moon. One
wishes that the moon would look away and the other asks the moon to look
at them. The title song of this movie became famous in Russia and China.

Song: dam bhar jo udhar mu.Nh phere, o chandaa
mai.n unse pyaar kar luu.ngi,
baate.n hazaar kar luu.ngi...
Movie: Awaara
Water-body: Sea

4.
The only 'phoren' water-body in our quiz. Zeenat Aman croons this
lovely solo in Asha's voice to Amitabh while they are enjoying the
picturesque locales of this lovely European country. The song starts
off in Italian sung by the boatman, and then this li'l dialogue takes
place ---

Amitabh - '.. ai, kya gaa raha hai yeh?' (referring to the boatman's
song)
Zeenat - 'apne premika ko yaad kar raha hai aur keh raha hai ke ..'
Amitabh (interrupting) - 'uh-uh.. aise nahin, gaa ke sunao'
Zeenat - 'gaa ke? achha ..'

And then the song starts.

Song: do lafzo.n kii hai dil kii kahaanii
yaa hai mohabbat, yaa hai jawaanii...
Movie: The Great Gambler
Water-body: Canal/Waterway in Venice

Anup: Great song by Asha. BTW, who gave the playback for the boatman,
an Italian singer or a desi babu :)

Ikram: I bet you'll cut points for people who just say Venice ... :)

Kalyan: A big flop and a great soundtrack. I love 'pehli pehli pyaar
ki mulaaqaatein' as well.

[Hosts]: Was it a flop? I thought it was a hit. Was it a '77 release?

Nuts: There's a scene where Zeenie baby tries unsuccessfully to wear a
sari. After she cries in frustration, Amitabh covers her and says
something profound like: numaaish paschimi andaaz hai, sharm,
hindustaani. Hilarious.

[Hosts]: Isn't this dialogue from 'Dostana'? That's the only movie
I remember seeing Zeenie wear a saree ever!

5.
Pooja Bhatt is the spoilt daughter of an eccentric rich man Anupam
Kher. She is, against her father's wishes, running away from home to
be with the man she thinks she loves -- an actor, who is actually
after her money. To escape she jumps off a boat (that she and her dad
are travelling in) and swims to the shore. Upon reaching the shore she
notices that her father's men have come in search of her. She finds a
group of fisherfolk (one of them being Deepak Tijori in a guest
appearance in this song) who agree to dress her up as one of them and
they all dance together to this song.

Song: galyaan saa.nkalii sonyaachii, hii porii konaachii
is kii adaa meraa dil le gayii, hii porii konaachii...
Movie: Dil Hai ki Maanta Nahin
Water-body: Sea (Arabian Sea)

Pradeep: How could you do this? No song lyrics clue? Most of your
clues have some lyrics-clue element. In this case however, you have a
pure film clue, and that too for a PoojaB movie ... you expect us to
have watched this movie more than other movies :-))

Rajiv: OH GOD!!! A Kumar Sanu song!! :-)

[Hosts]: Okay, so we did the unthinkable! :)

6.
Mandakini under a waterfall. :)

Song: tujhe bulaaye.n ye merii baahe.n..
.. aaja re, ab aa bhi jaa ...
Movie: Ram Teri Ganga Maili
Water-body: Waterfall

Anup: This is the clue where you gave the name of the waterbody away.
:) BTW are you sure this is the only song where Mandakini was under a
waterfall. I thought there were many. :)

Talking about the movie. A ridiculous movie, the worst attempt (IMO) of
Raj Kapoor and irony is that this was his most successful movie. :(
Rajeev Kapoor's character was wimpy and Mandakini's dumb. I can't
believe this movie is the biggest hit of all times. :((

[Hosts]: Yep, we gave the name of the waterbody away and yet people got
the wrong answer. :(

Ikram: If you want us to say 'gangotrii' or upper reaches of Ganga then
that is really unfair of you ... In any case, award us full points ...
:)

Dost-dushman: We knew this song was in the quiz before even going
through all the questions. Pani pani ho aur yeh haana na ho, yeh to
hohi nahin sakta. :)

Madhu & Aniruddha: How do you expect people to remember the lyrics of
this song? Remembering the picturization was definitely more important
than the lyrics! :-)

Punit: Pretty heavy lyrics -- '.. ke tujhko mukti yahin milegi..' and
that too under a waterfall in only a white sari - some mukti!

7.
Rajni Sharma is married to Sachin as a child bride. As is the custom,
after a few days she has to return to her parents' house and stay
there till she is older. The night before she leaves, Sachin sings
this song to her, telling her about all the things around him that he
likes, which also includes her. She sits with her head on his lap,
only asking the occasional "aur?" in this mellifluous Amit Kumar solo
with music by R D Burman.

Song: baDe achchhe lagate hai.n, ye dharatii,
ye nadiyaa, ye rainaa, aur tum ...
Movie: Balika Badhu
Water-body: River

Anup: Great song, IMO Amit Kumar's best song so far.

Nuts: Amazing song!! One of my favourites. So little musical
accompaniment. Amit Kumar's voice carries this song. Sorry if I wax
eloquent about this song, but maybe because it's one of the few songs I
can actually sing, I like it so much.

[Hosts]: We are very glad we had an opportunity to include this song in
a quiz. As Anup said -- this is probably Amit Kumar's best song ever.

8.
This Subhash Ghai movie marks the first hit for the two lead stars.
Jackie Dada and his gang kidnap the heroine by misleading her into
thinking that they are the good guys. One morning she goes out into
the woods to take a shower and Jackie's cronies watch her through
their binoculars. There is another song in the movie that features a
water-body which appears when the lead couple parts which missed
inclusion in this quiz to allow a larger variety of water-bodies to be
featured. :)

Song: nindiyaa se jaagi bahaar,
aisaa mausam dekhaa pahalii baar...
Movie: Hero
Water-body: Waterfall

Anup: You should have included that "other water body song" :) by
Reshma which IMO is the best song of the movie.

[Hosts]: Yes, 'lambii judaii' is a very nice song in an otherwise
boring soundtrack, but it is also an oft-repeated song in RMIM quizzes.
We already had a fair number of repeats to add one more.

9.
Mahender loves Maya though he is betrothed to Sudha. While Maya does
one of her usual idiosyncratic vanishing tricks he is compelled to
marry Sudha. Even after the marriage Maya's presence is very much
there in the house. Sudha is frustrated as Mahender is torn apart
between his old love for Maya and his new affection for Sudha. To try
and make things better the couple goes on a honeymoon. This gorgeous
Asha solo picturized on Rekha has lovely lyrics by Gulzar and
beautiful music by R D Burman. The movie starts in a railway station's
waiting room and goes back and forth between flashbacks and present.
This was the movie that started the 'it was a dark and stormy night'
cluing practice from Chitrahaar-5. :)

Song: katraa kataraa milatii hai, kataraa kataraa jiine do
zindagii hai, bahane do,
pyaasii huu.n mai.n pyaasii rahane do...
Movie: Ijaazat
Water-body: Lake/Pond

Arunabha: Excellent choice of Gulzar-RDB-Asha songs - my favorites.

10.
Shammi Kapoor is upto his usual antics in this movie that marked
Sharmila Tagore's debut. They are both on separate boats. He is
smitten by her and sings this song praising her moon face and golden
hair. The song characterized by rather emphatic "taa"s :) ends
predictably with Shammi toppling into the water. OPN's music for this
movie set in Kashmir.

Song: yeh chaand saa roshan cheharaa,
zulfo.n kaa rang sunaharaa...
taariif karuu.n kyaa usakii jisane tumhe.n banaayaa...
Movie: Kashmir ki Kali
Water-body: Lake (Dal Lake, Kashmir)

Balaji & Malini: expect 100% answer for this one...

Archana, Manishee & Pankaj: One could probably do a waterbody quiz with
just Shammi Kapur as a hero!

Punit: It was a miracle that Shammi Kapoor fell into the water at the
end of the song. The way he was jumping the boat should have overturned
much earlier in the song.

Nuts: Ugh. This just epitomises that genre of Rafi-for-Shammi songs
that I used to adore but now dislike.

[Hosts]: Yes, as Balaji and Malini predicted, we got a perfect score on
this one.

11.
Not dark, no night. Only the storm. Amitabh and Moushumi, a happy
couple, walking along Marine Drive in the rain with the waves
splashing off the rocks. This background Lata version of the song is
more appropriate in its picturization.. Kishore's soulful (and better
than Lata's) version appears in the starting of the movie at a
wedding.

Song: rimajhim gire saawan, sulag sulag jaaye man
bhiige aaj is mausam me.n, lagii kaisii ye agan...
Movie: Manzil
Water-body: Sea (Arabian Sea)

12.
A song in Yesudas's voice, we have Shekhar Kapoor as Shabana Azmi's
hero. They are on the shore full of beautiful rocks and he is trying
to tell her that though she is extremely beautiful, he is no less. One
of Bappi Lahiri's better compositions.

Song: maanaa ho tum behad hasii.n, aise bure ham bhii nahii.n
dekho kabhii to pyaar se, Darate ho kyu.n ikaraar se...
Movie: Toote Khilone
Water-body: Sea / Ocean

Anup: I think lyrics are by Kaifi Azmi. Kaifi and Bappi, what a combo.
:)

[Hosts]: We do believe they have more than one movie together. And
Kaifi and Bappi is as odd a combo as Bappi and Yesudas, and yet they too
have a lot of *good* songs together.

Nuts: You're making me work too hard for this quiz. Problem is, I'm
enjoying it. :)

13.
This Jackie-Anil-Madhuri starrer is a violent film associated with a
symbol of peace. In this song Madhuri tells Anil Kapoor that on the
road of love, if he leaves her arms, her eyes will still search for
him all over the world. The scene is in orange (it is sunset time) and
is as beautiful as the music by R D Burman. An Asha-Suresh Wadkar
duet.

Song: pyaar ke moD pe chhoDoge jo baahe.n merii
tumko DhoonDhe.ngii zamaane me.n, nigaahe.n merii...
Movie: Parinda
Water-body: Sea (Arabia Sea)

Arunabha: You've chosen some of Asha's best songs. I commend your
choice.

Punit: A lovely choice! Way to go!

Pradeep: only if you had Manisha instead of Madhuri :-))

14.
A former Miss India as a vamp against Rekha as the heroine. Kabir
Bedi marries Rekha so that he can get all of her wealth. He tries to
kill her with help from Sonu Walia, her friend. Rekha however gets
saved but is disfigured. In the second half of the movie Rekha returns
as a glamourous model (with the help of Shotgun Sinha) and takes
revenge on the people who tried to ruin her life. This song, whose
music is a take-off on Vangelis's 'Chariots of Fire' theme, has Sonu
Walia seducing Kabir Bedi in and around a water-body.

Song: mai.n terii huu.n jaanam, tuu meraa jiyaa
judaa tan se jaa.n ko, kis ne kiyaa...
Movie: Khoon Bhari Maang
Water-body: Swimming Pool

Nuts: Thanks for the Vangelis clue. I had to get some people in the
department to hum it for me, but I finally got it.

Abhijit: Sonu Walia will really have to make "efforts" to seduce
anyone. :)

[Hosts]: Kabir Bedi does look most disinterested in her efforts to
seduce him, though we believe it has more to do with the plot of the
film.

15.
Does anyone feel there are too many Gulzar and/or RDB songs in this
quiz? Yes? Are you you wondering if it is intentional? Yes! :) Hema
and Farida Jalal are filling their matkas and bathing Master Raju as
they sing this song. Is this the same water body that appears in clue
#1? Perhaps... but what can one's poor heart do :) but repeat the
water body when the song is so beautiful? Gulzar's lyrics accompany R
D Burman's music, full of 'fragrance'.

Song: bechaaraa dil kyaa kare, saawan jale bhaado jale
do pal kii raah nahii.n, ik pal ruke ik pal chale...
Movie: Khushboo
Water-body: River

Balaji & Malini: Going by the organizers' affiliations too many
Gulzar/RDB songs are to be expected :) but "two" many songs from same
movie :) :)? "two" much :)

[Hosts]: There can never be too much of Gulzar-RDB! :)

Pavan & UVR: I think this is a well, but it could well (;-)) be a
river. Oh yes it is!

Nuts: Nice clueing!

16.
Ekta and Siddharth (whatever happened to him) are lolling in the sand
in one of the better songs of recent times (well maybe 91-92 wasnt
that recent). A remake of the Tamil movie 'Agni Nachchattiram', the
movie's claim to fame was primarily its music although most of it was
copied from Ilayaraaja originals by Anand Milind. Siddharth is the
illegitimate son of Anupam Kher and Reema Lagoo while Sudesh Berry is
his legitimate son with Beena. The movie is all about their
khaandaan. A very nice movie by itself although it pales in
comparison with the Tamil original.

Song: aake terii baaho.n me.n har shaam lage sinduuri
mere man ko mahakaaye, tere man kii kastuurii...
Movie: Vansh
Water-body: Sea / Ocean

Pradeep: Again a PURE film-based clue and I flop :-) If you continue
this, hum jaise becharon ka kya hoga for whom chitrahaar and rjgk are
all the same :))

Ikram: I hope you don't consider a 'beach' as a water body, but the
body of water as the water body {ummm... you know what I meant to say
:) }

[Hosts]: We corrected the spelling of the Tamil movie as per Balaji and
Malini's comment. Interestingly, in this movie, while Anand-Milind did
copy I-raja's tunes, they didn't copy the songs from the original
soundtrack. For instance, although 'aake teri baahon mein' is a cog
from an I-raja original, the equivalent song on the beach from 'Agni
Nachchattiram' --- 'vaa vaa anbe anbe' doesn't have the same tune.
Strange huh? Can anyone please shed some light on the Tamil/Telugu
original song from where 'aake teri baahon mein' was copied from?

17.
Anand babu. Pushpa. Aansoo. Saline water. The song is picturized with
the then-superstar and the now Mrs. Pataudi in a boat. One of the
most well-known Kishore solos under R D Burman's music from the film
that epitomizes immortal love.

Song: chingaarii koii bhaDake to saawan use bujhaaye
saawan jo agan lagaaye use kaun bujhaaye...
Movie: Amar Prem
Water-body: River (Hooghly River)

Balaji & Malini: We are pretty sure this was picturised on a river.
So, hopefully your reference to "saline water" is to the tears !!!

Rajiv: There are so many good songs in this movie, one doesn't know if
one has the right answer to your clue unless one remembers the song
situation, but that's the whole point of the Chitrahaar ... welll.. of
course, this one has the most mentions of 'water bodies' so we shall see
if you've bowled a googly here .... :-))

Nuts: BTW, the ITRANS entry for this helpfully tells us which character
is played by whom. (:

[Hosts]: The 'saline water' reference was to the dialogue that takes
place before the song. This dialogue is also present in the ITRANS
entry for this song. RK tells ST --- 'ro mat Pushpa, yeh aansoon
'saline water' ke sivaa kuchh nahin' or something equally profound. :)

18.
This is a slightly unusual song as it begins with what is essentially
a different song, sung by some fisherfolk in a faraway boat. Zeenat
and Vinod Khanna are on the shore where the main part of the song
follows in the background. The song describes how he loves her, like a
dying man would cherish life. Vinod loves Zeenat but she loves Feroze
Khan, so in the end someone has to 'sacrifice'.

Song: nasiib insaan kaa, chaahat se hi sa.nwarataa hai...
.. ham tumhe.n chaahate hai.n aise,
marane waalaa koii zindagii chaahata ho jaise...
Movie: Qurbani
Water-body: Sea / Ocean / Bay

19.
The 'Bobby' pair came back together in this Ramesh Sippy movie. The
hero and the leading lass are at hero's mansion to meet his
mother. Upon discovering that no one is home Rishi gets extra romantic
and this Asha-Shailendra duet folows. Dimple in a red saari looks
gorgeous. Kamal Hasan in a powerful performance forms the third corner
of the love triangle. The water-body in this song is not the title of
the movie. :)

Song: jaane do naa
paas aao naa
chhuo naa chhuo naa, mujhe chhuo naa chhuo naa
dekho chhuo naa, chhuo naa, chhuo naa...
Movie: Saagar
Water-body: Swimming Pool

Nuts: Heh heh heh. Pretty sexy song that is always cut from the movie
when it's shown on Doordarshan. Apparently the censors can't let us
watch a wet sari draped around the luscious Ms. Kapadia. BTW, the sari
is orange.

[Hosts]: It is a nice vermillion red!

20.
This Manna Dey song has Rajesh Khanna wondering about life being a
puzzle, while Amitabh and Sumita Sanyal sit on the sand and watch
him. It is difficult to decide who did a better job in this movie
though more votes probably go in favor of Rajesh Khanna who stole the
show with his role of a cancer-struck cheerful hero who dies at the
end.

Song: zindagii kaisii hai pahelii haaye,
kabhii to hasaaye, kabhii ye rulaaye ...
Movie: Anand
Water-body: Sea (Arabian Sea)

[Hosts]: Although we had a bunch of entries who claimed this to be Juhu
Beach and added that they had this classified :) information because
they were from Bombay, isn't this song actually picturized on Chowpatty
and not Juhu beach?

21.
Another Feroze Khan movie. (Hey! That does not reflect our bias
towards him! We didn't want to include as many of his songs as
featured, but it seems like he has an affinity for waterbody songs :)
) The movie features Anil Kapoor as the spoilt younger brother who
starts off flirting with Dimple Kapadia but eventually falls in love
with her. This background song starts off in a water body and
continues into a passionate scene in the barn.

Song: jaane jaana, o jaane jaana
jab jab terii suurat dekhuu.n,
pyaar saa dil me.n jaage...
Movie: Jaanbaaz
Water-body: Swimming Pool

This movie has a waterbody in three of its songs. We had to pick one
of them. :)

Balaji & Malini: Boy, can't say if there are songs becaue of
water-bodies, or, there are water-bodies in this movie for songs :) :)

Pradeep: passionate scene in the barn?? atariya pe lotan kabootar :-)

22.
Amitabh in a speedboat sees Zeenat splashing around in the surf and
bursts into this song in R D Burman's voice (probably the only film in
which RDB provides exclusive playback for Amitabh). If getting more
'namkeen' in the water suits your taste (for want of a better word),
then you shouldn't have trouble in answering this 'call' for Goa's
liberation.

Song: samundar me.n nahaa ke aur bhii namakiin ho gayii ho
lagaa hai pyaar kaa voh rang x 2
ke rangiin ho gayii ho...
Movie: Pukaar
Water-body: Sea (Arabian Sea near Goa)

Vijay Kumar: The only redeeming features of the film are Am-B's song
and his legs running along the aircraft. The Arabian Sea is a bit of an
overkill.. or you should never have tried the Geography prize.

[Hosts]: We suppose the Bollywood filmmakers just hop down to the
nearest beach to shoot, which explains the proliferation of Arabian Sea.

23.
One of Waheeda Rehman's memorable roles in which she acts as a nurse
treating patients of depression. Rajesh Khanna features in this song
although Dharmendra too is there in the movie. Here they are in a boat
on a water body with a bridge behind them. KK's vazandaar voice
describes the strange evening in Gulzar's powerful lyrics.

Song: voh shaam kuchh ajiib thii, ye shaam bhii ajiib hai
voh kal bhii paas paas thii, voh aaj bhii kariib hai...
Movie: Khamoshi
Water-body: River

Anup: Does the singer of this song need any training in music, I don't
think so. :))

Vijay Kumar: Ever noticed the chorus in the song? It is always
present, but never intrusive, and it is mind-blowing.

Nuts: All right, so the extra clueing about the words in the song is
for dunderheads like me. (:

Ikram: River... I remember a bridge... Might be Yamuna 'cos Agra is
famous for the paagalKhaana.

[Hosts]: Your powers of deduction are remarkable, my dear Watson. :)

24.
Rakesh Roshan is a good-for-nothing who is looking for an easy way to
a comfortable life. Jayaprada is a rich gal that he decides to charm
and marry so that he can live his life off her wealth. She, on the
other hand begins to like him and does not realize his devious plans.
This Kishore-Lata duet has the couple setting a little paper-boat into
the water. Music by Rajesh Roshan.

Song: tujh sang priit lagaayii sajanaa,
sajanaa, sajanaa ho raamaa
haaye bedardii, haaye bedardii...
Movie: Kaamchor
Water-body: River / Rivulet / Stream

Pradeep: oh no! my Klan membership is at risk :-))

Pintu Diwana: Now these are the street puddles, well, co-operative
puddles forming a small flowing stream.

25.
Another bathing beauty song! The 'kashmir ki kali hoon main...'
heroine is in a water body, singing this song about her delicate
youth, while 'neighbour' Bhola is listening to her. Even though our
hero is smitten by her, he has to summon the help of his gurudev to
outsmart, outwit and outsing her music teacher to win her heart in
this movie.

Song: bhaai battur, bhaai battur ab jaayenge kitanii duur
naazuk naazuk merii jawaani, chalane se majbuur...
Movie: Padosan
Water-body: Bath-tub :)

Balaji & Malini: You call this a water-body? :) BTW one water body
missing is the "well". Oh well. :)

Pradeep: This makes SB one of the prettiest faces to have graced the
silver screen ...

Archana, Manishee & Pankaj: This was really the limit of variety! I am
surprised puddles didn't count :-))

Nuts: ((: Very good choice.

[Hosts]: Incidentally this is one of those movies in which all the male
songs outshine the female songs.

Since the participants have made us very happy with a record
number of entries, we are even more pleased to announce that this quiz
has also generated a record number of winners. For the RAMLI award
(movies) we have an incredible 26 gold medalist entries, 19 with a
silver and 10 at the third spot. The RMIM award (songs) is shared by 10
entries at the top, with a second-place tally of 6 and 12 winners for
the bronze medal. There are 2 entries apiece in the top two positions
and 1 bronze medalist for the Geography award.

There is also a huge number of first-time participants which is
always gratifying, and most of them have done quite well for themselves
in the medals hunt.

Interestingly, only one entry managed the Grand Slam --- a gold
in all three categories. More on that in the end...

And finally, with the customary cacophony of trumpets and drums,
here are the winners...
