CD REVIEW: BEST OF ALAMGIR VOLUME 1
Alamgir ruled Pakistani Pop for some time. And after
listening to this
CD which I happened to pick up at a show on a boat sailing
San Francisco
Bay on April 3rd, I now remember why. As the waves of
nostalgia
generated from the performance and this CD have still not
subsided, I
only thought it fitting that a review of this album should
be written.
The first track on this CD may as well be the title here
as within
"Dekha Na Tha" lives Alamgir's success story. Catchy tunes
like this
one are rarely missed by listeners and a written description
here cannot
do it enough justice. "Mujhay Dil Say Na Bhulana" the next
song, is a
ballad that one cannot forget plus the folk Tune that
follows in
"Cangar" reserves special merit.
Alamgir's attempt at Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Marhoom's "Mast
Mast" is
good
but since I've had the opportunity to listen to the late
Master sing
this live on two occasions, one can say that nothing beats
the original.
This cannot be said for Alamgir's next track "Koko Korina"
from the
movie "Armaan" (Pakistan's first pop song and most popular
movie ever?)
because in this one he is on home turf and is much more
commanding.
"Kurti Malmal Di" is okay but "Sham Say Pehlay Aana" is more
convincing.
The 8th track on this CD "Yeh Shaam Aur Tera Naam" brings
back the
ladies and maintains this singer's popularity each time.
This is one of
the most beautiful ballads sung during that Pakistani
generation. Next
"Kehdena" is good and "Tum Meri Zindagi Ho" a solid
rendition. The
experimental "Amae Bhashae Lee Ray" takes Alamgir's
international
(including Bengali) flavor to new heights but may be a
little difficult
for some Pakistanis to follow.
The patent "Jugni" on track 12 is well done but "Hum
Chalay" next is
memorable. And in closing with "Tomare Legeche" a Bengali
tune, Alamgir
does not forget his rich roots in Bangladesh either and
gives this CD a
very enjoyable finish.
Alamgir was a pop institution in Pakistan. Here in this CD
are just a
few old windows into his talent. But he needs to open some
new windows
for his fans too. It is our hope that in his life outside of
South Asia,
he will let those old creative juices flow and give us many
more
enjoyable "Shaams" (evenings) of his new efforts.

The original post seems to have been sent to two other
Newsgroups "soc.culture.bangladesh" and "soc.culture.
indian". Although our Newsgroup is RMIM, I think music
of Pakistan and Bangladesh can also be included at least
occasionally. I would request Mr. Ras H. Siddiqui to
consider sending such posts to this Newsgroup too, if
other RMIMers do not object. This would have one
added benefit : one post less by Mo !

Alamgir does have a nice voice and a flair for
singing, but he is not just a Pop Singer.

Actually, "Koko Korina" was sung by Ahmed Rushdi, a
a Pakistani singer of Bangladeshi origin. He died
tragically young. I remember a particularly haunting
song by him from the Pakistani film "Chakori" :
"Kabhi to tum ko yaad aayeNgi".

Ras
Afzal, I am quite aware of who sang the original Ko Ko Korina because
it happens to be one of the most popular Urdu songs of my generation.
What I meant was that Alamgir sang this song just about as good as the
original. and yes, I am quite aware that Alamgir is much more then just
a Pop singer.
Actually I think that besides Ahmed Rushdie Pakistani Pop was really
started by Runa Laila who is Bangladeshi.
Ras
PS: I will be sending more CD Reviews your way because I have recently
been supplied 9 different ones from IMI Entertainment Group located in
Berkeley, California.

Amit Chatterjee received his traning in Hindusthani classical music
from his mother, Mrs. Manju Chatterjee, a singer if the distingushed
Vishnupur and Patiala gharana. However his playing became strongly
influenced by USTAD RAIS KHAN, the great sitar meastro of the Indore
gharana. Mr. Chatterjee plays in the khayal-gayaki ang, a style that
emulates singing - not only in technique, but in temperament, pacing,
and improvisational concept. His music is characterized by its dignity
and elegance, an unhurried and regal expositon of the raga, and
song-like sweetness not always heard in classical music. WTMI radio
in Miami describes his playing as "...mesmerizing and hypnotizing."
In addition Amit Chatterjee has recorded and performed extensively
with artists such as Joe Zawinul, Eric Johnson, Carlos Santana, Paul
Winter and Paul Halley.
Polash Gomes is an exponent of the Lucknow baj, one of the oldest
gharanas of tabla. He is a disciple of Shri Marinal Pal, a senior
disciple of Ustad Afaq Hussain khan, the eminent trochbearer of this
respected style. In addition Polash has received instruction from
Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, one of the finest players of this time.
