It was a pleasure to watch Lajwanti starring Balraj Sahni and Nargis .
The music by SD Burman Dada was excellent , I particularly liked the
song ' kuch din pahle ek taal me '

Was this movie by Nargis before / after her marriage with Sunil Dutt ?
She was a superb actress .

As far as I know, she got married to Sunil Dutt during
Mother India, thus mother India got released after their
marriage.

After that she had taken sanyaas from films, but after
sometime her brother started making a movie and insisted
that she does it. So she conceded and that was the only
movie she did after their marriage. That was Raat Aur Din.

Thanks Rawat-Ji . Talking of Nargis there is a famous urdu couplet on
Nargis ; here it is regarding flower and not actress . I donot know
who penned it but very wisely said .

Hazaaron saal nargis apni benoori pe rothi hai
Badi mushkil se hota hai chaman me deedavar paida

There is a Parsi delicacy which goes by the name nargisi kofta . I
am sure you must
have heard about it .

AFAIR, Sunil Dutt and Nargis got married towards the end of
April 1958. She had perhaps three films on hand at the time
which she completed after her marriage. One was "Lajwanti"
and another was "Ghar Sansaar". Right now I can't recollect
the third movie. "Raat Aur Din" might have been planned much
earlier, but was completed much later, and released a decade
after their marriage.

Another song from "Lajwanti" which I like a great deal is the
Geeta Roy number "Aaja chhaye kaare badra, chham chham barseN
nain kajra re....".

incidently, the above couplet was used in the closing scene
of Pakeezah, probably in the voice of Kamal Amrohi. That was
his poetic way of prompting the youth to follow the lead
given in the film, and give street dancers a life.

The third movie was Adalat (1958) pairing her with Sunil Dutt. I also
read that Raat Aur Din was planned in late '50s, cannot recall exact
year.

Adalat has Nargis, not Sunil Dutt however. I believe the lead male role in
Adalat was played by Pradeep Kumar

Lajwanti is a showcase for the SDB-Asha tuning. Apart from the above,
it has ko_ii aayaa dha.Dakan kahatii hai, gaa mere man gaa, cha.ndaa
maamaa mere dwaare aanaa (w. Manna and chorus). All very nice songs
(well, some nicer than others :) ).

But my pick from the movie is the lorie cha.ndaa re chhupe rahanaa soye
merii mainaa. It is a nicely crafted song. Just the right pace and soft
orchestration. And in spite of teetering on the edge of overdoing things a
couple of times, Asha carries it off. By the way, the video version I had
watched had two versions. I don't recall whether they were identical.

Hi Chetan:

I took agree that the lorie is the best part of Lajwanti. AFAIR, Jaidev
was SDB's assistant in the movie. The two versions of the lorie are
*different* -- the opening lines of antaraa are as follows:

phuul chamelii dhiire mahako jho.nkaa naa lag jaaye (happy version)

chaa.Nd bataa de maa.N kii mamataa chainaa kaise paaye (sad version)

Finally, "koii aayaa dhaDkan kahti hai" isn't from lajwanti. Is it?

Best regards,

Sad version has only one Antaraa. Nargis sings after she is seperated
from
her daughter and husband.

I consider Lajwanti to be Asha's all time best sundtrack in HFM.

Yes Ghanti Saab , I find no song by Lata . It's strange
as Lata always playbacked for Nargis . I think the tunes were set for
Asha and she did sing very well .

Announcers at All India Radio used these lines
after the death of Rajendra Prasad, Nehru, Shastri.
May be they used for other leaders too.

You know what, based on Hum Dono's tunes and Asha's mellow performance
in the same --- I feel that it was Jaidev who got Asha in Lajwanti where
Lata would have been usually given voice for Nargis and pathos. I
wonder though, anyone has any idea/info?

Best
A

PS: Asha's performance in Hum Dono is ATB too, by that standard.

Yes, it was during the rift (1958-62) when Asha
perhaps sang some of her best solos and duets.
SD Burman also used Suman's voice quite effectively,
particularly in film Apna Hath Jagannath and Meri Surat
Teri Aankhain.

In article <1121393873....@g49g2000cwa.googlegroups.com>,
kian...@yahoo.com says...

mmmm No. 'Apna Hath Jagannath' has no song by Suman.
In 'Meri Surat Teri Aankhen', she has only one song,
albeit a delectable duet with Mukesh. Lata, however,
is featured prominently.

The soundtrack of SD Burman that showcases Suman
is 'Miya Bibi Razi'. She has two lovely solos there,
and the first is a masterpiece:

. khulii hai aa.Nkh magar, Khvaab hai vahii kaa vahii

. chho.Do, chho.Do more baiyaa.N saa.nvare

Although only for one song, I consider SDB's choice
of Suman for 'Meri Surat Teri Aankhen' significant,
becuase he did so when Lata was available. The
peculiarly appealing chemistry of Mukesh-Suman
that Surajit Bose used to talk about might be the
reason.

Here's one that seems to closely match:

You indeed know several good couplets but it is obvious that
you have never learned anything from any of them.

For example, the above one. How beautifully it contrasts
with your ugly behaviour is calling people all sorts of
names and what not, just to give yourself a satisfaction
that your purposeless is great. You love to undermine other
people's efforts because recognising them would have made
you realise that you could never do anything of worth. You
are an arm chair thinker over a glass of beer. You don't
have perseverance to do anything. You will theorize and then
run away when it comes to hard work. Now you can understand
what aalasii/ lazy really implies.

That is how you have removed all people by barking and
biting, and why nobody is coming near you anymore. There is
a two man caravan in which you are travelling.

What a Bozo you and your kid disciple are.

It is time to post that ten year old apology again because
you still need to follow whatever moons you had promised in it.

I think only someone who has had the good fortune of hearing
Ghantasala sing live to "an audience filled with music lovers"
(without the voice being artificially modified by electronics
such as microphones and amplifiers) can say for sure.

Dear Sethna Ji,

It is by Majrooh.

I have a recording of a program of Vividh Bharati in which
Majrooh himself recites this sher, alongwith other shers.

Majrooh cites that as an example of taraqqipasand shaayarii
