Hi folks,
Here is a little music trivia. I have heard that the song
"Dil Jalta hai to Jalne de..." sung in the voice of Saigal was actually
not sung by Saigal but by Mukesh who began his career as a Saigal
impersonator/impressionist/imitator/whatever. Could someone please throw
some more light on this matter?

Have fun,
Shenoi

Yes indeed the song was sung by Mukesh but I have doubts about it being the
first song of Mukesh in films as claimed by netters quite sometime back.It
might be his first hit.But I remember reading an article by Raju Bharatan in
the Illustrated Weekly quite sometime back that Mukesh's first film was
'Nirdosh' in 1941.I am not sure whether as an actor(yes he tried his luck as
an actor). He was the first of the new crop of playback singers(Hemant -1942,
MannaDey -1943, Rafi-1944,Talat-1945). The above song is from the film
'Pehli Nazar' in 1944).

As an aside

Even Kishore's idol was K.L.Saigal and it was for this purpose that he
came to Bombay. There is a song in 'Ziddi' where he sings in K.L.Saigal's style.

Just as an aside:

I think Mukesh made a guest appearance in the film "Aah" starring
Raj Kapoor and Nargis. The last song of the film is

Choti si ye zindagani re
char din ki jawaani teri
hai re hai
gam ki jawaani teri.

The song was sung by Mukesh and was picturised on the Tanga-walla
who is taking a dying Raj Kapoor to Nargis. The Tanga-walla was played
by Mukesh himself.

Have fun,
Shenoi

PS: Any corrections welcome.

I think this was one of his first few songs. I remember reading somewhere that
this was one of the songs where mukesh came to the recording studio, completely
drunk. The music director decided to go ahead and let him sing anyway, he
did this song completely drunk. That might be what accounts for the different
approach he used in the song.

I don't know about the authenticity of the above statement,
but I have a recording of Mukesh's last concert in 1976 in
Cleveland, Ohio, during which he suffered the fatal heart-
attack.
Before singing this song, "Dil jalta hai to jalne de..."
he addressed the audience in the following words,
"Bhaiion, yeh hai meri zindagi ka pehla gana..."
And then Lata's voice crops out from the back ground
saying, "Or unki zindagi ka pehla geet, unke aakhri
show mein unki zindagi ka aakhri geet saabit hua."

Any comments ?
