Dear All,
As most of you would be knowing, Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer also known as Maha
Vaidyanatha Sivan is one of the greatest composers of carnatic music next
only to the renowned trinity of Tyagararaja, Dikshithar and Sastrigal.
During my recent trip to Madras, I had the opportunity of meeting and
talking to his descendent and greatgrandson Shri M.N.Srinivasan (MNS). MNS
is an octogenerian and a very colourful personality in his own right. He is
a retired Commissioner of Income Tax and despite his age he is still an
astute astrologer and an expert on current Income Tax Law. In memory of his
great ancestor Maha Vaidyanatha Sivan, MNS has brought out a useful
compendium of Sivan's compositions. Sivan has composed kritis in several
ragaas such as Mohanam, Hamsadhwani, ShriRanjani, Kalyani, Karaharapriya,
Ranjani, Kambodhi, Kanada, Thodi, Bhairavi, Sankarabharanam, Dhanyasi,
Darbar, Aabheri and Vasantha. In his book, MNS has included all these kritis
with text and notation. Our budding Vidwans will find this collection very
useful indeed. One of the most notable achievements of Sivan is the creation
of what is known as 'Mela Raga Malika'. This is one single lyric where all
the 72 Melakarta Raagaas starting from Kanakangi and ending with Rasikapriya
find a place in sequential order. Sivan has built in this lyric the 'Chittai
Swaraas'. MNS has included the text and Swaras for this magnificent magnum
opus in his compendium.
Apart from all this musical treasures there are also a number of rare
photographs which will be found delectable to any connoisseur of carnatic
music. In addition there is a brilliant account of Maha Vaidyanatha Sivan's
life history, which I found gripping and I am sure so would other devotees
of carnatic music.
MNS has put a nominal price tag Rs 150 for his great work, which I think
would not even cover the cost of paper and printing!
