I think its a wonderful idea. However, while we are waiting for Ashok's
article, here is a compilation of a few songs sung by "Hindi" singers. I
have used "Hindi" within quotes to include all the singers popular
in Hindi movies and others north of vindhyAs. This list, by no means is
exhaustive. Further, there are some missing information in the songs
listed. Learned folks here can fill in the missing info. The fact that
I started this thread on kannada rAjyothsavA is pure coincidene ;).
Here goes:

Non-film songs:
1. manada manada Aseyu ninagE
Singer: Amirbai Karnataki
Lyrics: D.S.Kumtekar
(The music of this song is <exactly> like meri jAAn meri jAAn sung by
Lata in the film yahUdi)
2. ninnanu neneyute rAtriya kaLeve
Singer: Amirbai Karnataki
Lyrics: D.S.Kumtekar
(The music of this song is <exactly> like sari sari rAt teri yAd satAye

Singer: Amirbai Karnataki
Lyrics: D.S.Kumtekar
(The music of this song is <exactly> like ik pardesi merA dil le gaya
sung by Asha and Rafi in film ??)
D.S.Kumtekar has also translated some hindi poems to kannada. I have
heard M.S.Sheela sing the translated version of poem "Ek phool ki chah"
by Mythili Sharan Gupta.
4. jaya gaurI jaya gaurI, varava kodU gauri
Singer: Manik Verma.
Lyrics: Traditional (??)
5. ghana shyAma sundarA sridharA, yeLLayya beLagAyitu
Singer(s): Manna Dey and Lakshmi Shankar.
(This song is translation of the marathi song ghana shyAma
sundara from the film amar bhoopAli. The original marathi song is sung
by Lata Mangeshkar, Panditrao Nagarkar and chorus. marathi lyrics by
Honaji Bala and music by Vasanth Desai. The kannada version has the same
music as the marathi one.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Although the subject says - songs by "Hindi" singers, I would like to
mention a couple more items. This pertains to the translation of
Rabindra Sangeeth to kannada. There are two poems that I know of.
1. antaranga gaLanudisai antarangadarasA.
This one is sung by S.Janaki.
There is another one sung by
P.B.Sreenivos. I've forgotten the lyrics.
Any info on these two songs will be of great help.
Regards,
- Dinesh Krishnajois.
P.S.: In the list there are several songs by Amirbai Karnataki.
Although Amirbai is a kannadiga, I have still included the songs because
she is known for her Hindi film-songs.

Before you buy.
Thanks, Dinesh, for the great rajyOtsava gift! I don't have much
to add. I am following up mainly to set the routing to the sleepy
newsgroup SCIK!

This is a great song to start with. It is included in the
tribute to female singers that Vish and guri presented at
the Denver RMIM meet, on account of good offices of Balaji.
I have one lyrics-related doubt: in some instances, Amir
seems to sing it as "bayasida phala siri baa". Is that
right?

Don't know the lyricist, but the music director for
'Kalavati' is the great G. K. Venkatesh.

This soundtrack is supposed to have another Rafi song,
a duet with S. Janaki that goes:
. ninnalli nanna dEvara ka.nDe
I have never heard it. Perhaps it is a song to be
found only in the film?

Very literary film, based on the famous trilogy
by Niranjana. If memory serves me right, the
soundtrack was anchored by Manna Dey as the male
singer. A couple of classic poems in Kannada
literature were used in the soundtrack and I think
they were also sung by Manna Dey with a female singer
and chorus. The songs I remember are:
. naDe mu.nde naDe mu.nde nuggi naDe mu.nde
jaggadeye kuggadeye higgi naDe mu.nde
Tough to sing for a person that doesn't know the
language. The stanzas are also like that, e.g.,
nammeelubugaLa mEle muuDuvudu muuDuvudu
bhaaratada liile, navabhaaratada liile
Manna Dey negotiated it quite well, I think. The
other song is
. jayatE jayatE jayatE
satyamEva jayatE
It also has tough stanzas, like
bEvu bitti maavu beLeva
tavaka bEDa maanava
Unfortunately, I don't remember the poets. I
hope nettors in SCIK can. I think the music
director was M. Ranga Rao.

There is a 1990s film 'Soorya Putra.' It is
supposed to have songs by Anuradha Paudval.
She, like Suman Kalyanpur, is a Saraswat from
Karnataka; so might know some Kannada.

The original is a Roshan composition from 'Aji Bas Shukriya.'

That's interesting. The OP Nayyar tune from 'Phagun' has also
been borrowed to sing a very popular poem of Bendre:
. innuu yaaka baralillavvaa hubbaLLiyavaa
vaaradaaga muuru sali ba.ndu hOgOvaa

I think the second part of the line is
. beLagaayitu ELayyaa
and the continuation:
kELayyaa pakshigaLa kareyaa
nODayyaa aruNOdayaa
> Singer(s): Manna Dey and Lakshmi Shankar.
>(This song is translation of the marathi song ghana shyAma

The male singer for the Kannada version is not Manna Dey.
I think it is Ambar Kumar.

There is a sizable repertoire of translations of Raveendra Sangeet
in Kannada. Aakaashavani Dharwar used to broadcast a 15-minute programme
of RS songs in Kannada every morning! A couple I remember are:
. ellO ra.ngaa ennantara.ngaa O
. a.ntara.ngavanu araLisu olave
a.ntaHharaNada oLa nalive
It's a translation of "a.ntara mama vikasita kara he".

It is a pity that such a wonderful voice wasn't used optimally
by the then-Madras-based composers for Kannada films.
I hope SCIK nettors can add to your list.
