Here are the answers and results of the second Chitrahaar quiz dedicated
to the great singer Mohammed Rafi. Today is 31st July 1995. Exactly 15
years before, on 31st July 1980, Mohammed Rafi passed away. Results of
this quiz are being announced on this day to offer a unique Shraddhanjali
to him.
I do not have anything new to tell you about Rafi. We all know that he
is/was one of the greatest singers. And we all have enjoyed innumerable
songs by him. So let's just thank God for giving him the voice to sing,
and ears to us to listen. And let's move on to the results.
SOME GENERAL COMMENTS :
=======================
It was an enjoyable experience to compile the quiz, read the interesting
comments made by the participants and prepare the results ! I thank you
all for this wonderful experience.
The Rafians liked the quiz alright, but it was the KKKlaners whose
comments I loved most. :-) Read the following sample comments to really
appreciate the beauty of the famous friendly wars :-)
Arun - Btw, I am a KKKlaner, but even if I win this quiz (too optimistic,
right?), and you even if you invite me to join your Rafifan, be
informed that I am not interested ;-)
Ketan - Lastly don't forget --- I still remain a loyal KKKlan. Just
that we keep a close watch on the enemy's activities. :)
Of course, there are some who belong to the fan clubs of some other
singers ! Pasand apni apni, khayaal apne apne !! Since the rights of
"Minorities" are respected in India, here is a sample comment made by
a fan belonging to one such "Minority" :-) :-)
Preetibabu - I might have randomly picked up some twenty odd songs and
scribbled them down - don't take that to imply that I am a Rafian!!
or intend to become one. Not in this janam. I am doing the world
a big favour by writing down the first line of twenty rafi songs
in succession!
Hushshsh ! They all had a chance to get amnesty for their sins, but they
have ruined it :-) :-)
Many of the early participants refused to be lebelled as either a Rafian
or a KKKlaner. So I stopped asking the question. But my intentions behind
asking this question were innocent ! Really !! I just wanted to give some
interesting statistics. But since many were, perhaps justifiably, quiet,
I scrapped the idea.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL :
==================
It's imperative that something is said about the difficulty level of this
quiz. It turned out to be a verrrry verrry easy one. I wanted it to be
an easy one, but still I was surprised to discover that it's become SOOO
easy. There are several reasons. Many of the songs asked in the quiz,
got mentioned on RMIM during this period. It wasn't only Pintu this time,
but a lot of others doing it quite unintentionally. Even Renu, if you
know what I mean :-) Then the clues were very informative ! As Manish Shah
said, "Frankly, it turned out to be more of shabdahaar than chitrahaar".
The cryptic clues did help those who read the clues carefully. The songs
were all very famous.
On the other hand, quite in contrast to all this was the fact that, ONLY
ONE song was guessed by ALL the participants. Anyway, I have absolutely
no problem in my quiz being the easiest of all.
It was enjoyable, and that's the ONLY aim, when I compile a quiz.
PARTICIPANTS :
==============
It turned out to be a massively participated event, and I am very very
happy about it. Total 68 people participated to give 47 entries !!
I thank all the participants for making this quiz a really great success.
I am really greedy, and I would have liked to have 50 entries :-) But
nevertheless, it was indeed a good response. Following is the list of
participants. It's NOT in any specific order.

A big THANK YOU is in order to all the participants. Some mails I am
sure have got lost/bounced. Two more entries were awaited till the last
second. Both Preetham and Ashish-Renu had sent mails that their entries
are coming. But unfortunately the entries didn't reach my site. Under
normal circumstances, I would have waited for their entries. But I just
cannot miss today's deadline of posting the results. So I tender my
apologize to both the teams. And also to other teams, whose entry might
have got lost. I hope this hasn't happened with anybody else.

Naushad-Rafi-Shakeel-Dilip ! No other 'quartet' has so many gems to
their credit as this unbeatable combination !! This song has all that is
required for a semiclassical filmi song. Sargam, Taraanaa, Aalaap, you
name it and it's there. For the Gurus, it's a sufficient clue to say that
it's in Raag Hamir. Others can guess if I tell, that at the end is a
fantastic Sitar piece. For the remaining, I will say that, in a Mehfil
Dilip is singing this Rafi solo and playing Sitar very convincingly (he
learned Sitar just for this scene !). And thank God, it's Kumkum who is
dancing, and not the heroine MeenaK (she is not present in the song) :-)
The song stops when people discover a snake on the dancing floor.
---------------------------
Undoubtedly this is one of the songs appearing in "All time Rafi bests",
for almost everybody. But the stats are 43/47 ! Not 100%.
Sridhar - Perhaps the best song in this selection. But I haven't seen
the others yet. And with Rafi each song appears better than the last.
Rajiv - Frankly, I don't remember the snake in this song, which means
that if my answer is correct, I have *never* watched the song to
the end!? Wow!
Chetan - Maybe you should have mentioned the "taan" by Amir Khan Sahib :)
So, it is not rrreally a solo ;)
SONG : madhuban me raadhika naache re
MOVIE : Kohinoor
ACTORS : Dilipkumar, Kumkum
SINGERS : Rafi
MUSIC : Naushad
LYRICS : Shakeel
------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.
Rafi could match mannerisms of another contemporary actor Dev Anand as
well ! It's a lovely night and the Moon is also a bit "lost". Devsaab is
walking miles and miles in his characteristic style while singing this
Rafi solo. Waheeda is far away, but she is still able to hear the song.
The MD is SDB of course.
---------------------------
This was a sitter. 46/47 !
Manish - a matter of translation...
Ketan - Actually I saw the literal translation of this song on the back
of an old HMV vinyl record. It literally went "lost lost moon".
Sridhar - It's so hard to forgive SDB for ever having chosen KK for Dev.
SONG : khoya khoya chaand
MOVIE : Prempujari
ACTORS : Dev Anand, Waheeda
SINGERS : Rafi
MUSIC : S.D.Burman
LYRICS : Majrooh

3.
Do we have to talk about another actor of the same era ? The dumbo king
Bharat Bhushan :-( But alas, there are so many Rafi gems for him. This
time it's again a Naushad-Rafi-Shakeel combo. In this movie BharatB is
a singer who challenges Tansen. But now he is singing a sweet Rafi solo
for a very young MeenaK. Rafi's voice gives him the power to pull MeenaK's
boat towards him, while the entire village wathces this spectacle. Was
this scene shot at the Sangam in Allahabad/Prayaag ? :-)
---------------------------
Many mentioned that this is not a solo. Lata also sings. But this _IS_ a
solo (plus chorus at the end of the song). The duet version has only one
stanza, and is played when the movie ends. That stanza is quite apt -
goes like ... "chhupoge bhaNwar me to .." etc.
Latika & Prabha - After all the initials BB match the hero with the movie.
Rajiv - 'Sangam' --> ho rahegaa 'milan'.
Sami - Another naushad/rafi combo!! I wudn't complain if they all were
the same!
SONG : tu Ganga ki mauj, maiN Jamuna ka dhaara
MOVIE : Baiju Bawara
ACTORS : Bharat Bhushan, Meena Kumari
SINGERS : Rafi
MUSIC : Naushad
LYRICS : Shakeel Badayuni
------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.
While on the topic of dumbos let's dismiss another one of this era. Here
Pradeepkumar and Beena Roy form a Love-pair from the Mughal era. NO, NO,
let me finish. This is not Anarkali. It did not have a single Rafi song.
This is a duet with Lata. Roshan's tune is good but plays a secondary
role to Sahir's great idea. It's a GHazal like song, each Sher sung by
Rafi or Lata ! Awesome lyrics. PradeepK is requesting Beena Roy to walk
on a carpet of flowers, and she denies by saying that it will be an
insult to his love. Sahir has written some extraordinary duets.
---------------------------
Last time it was Pintu, this time it's somebody else. If you don't know
what I am talking about then wait till tomorrow ! :-) :-)
Manish - a matter of translation again
SONG : paaoN chhu lene do phooloN ko, inaayat hogi
MOVIE : Taajmehal
ACTORS : Pradeep Kumar, Beena Roy
SINGERS : Rafi, Lata
MUSIC : Roshan
LYRICS : Sahir

5.
Rajendrakumar has called Vaijayantimala in a garden. Music by SJ. A very
famous solo by Rafi. Did this win the filmfare prize ? Wait, wait. This
is not from Suraj ! Since we cannot have a Raj Kapoor song, this is from
his movie. What puzzles me is, first RajendrK writes a "love-letter" to
her. Then calls her in a garden and then gives the letter himself. Then
sings a song to tell her to not get angry. And on top of it, sings every
thing that is written ! Now why did he do both ? He could have given the
letter and kept quiet, or else he could have sung the song instead of
giving the letter. Anyway, even Vaiju got confused, that's why she
married Raj Kapoor later in the movie.
---------------------------
Sami - I knew it was too good to last :-( Here come shanky-J !! :-)
Mantri (Man3!) - Ye kaise kaise hero ko ithne sunder-sunder heroine or
acche-acche gaane mil jaathe hain..khair
Ramki - Too many clues for such a sitter of a song! :) I stopped reading
after seeing "love letter" :)
SONG : ye mere prempatra paDHakar ke tum naaraaz na hona
MOVIE : Sangam
ACTORS : Rajendra Kumar, Vaijayantimala
SINGERS : Rafi
MUSIC : Shankar-Jaikishan
LYRICS : Sailendra

6.
When this movie was released, a Marathi weekly titled it's review by -
"Ek Sharmila aur Ek Gorilla" ! The movie is also remembered for the
great songs by O.P.Nayyar. And this Rafi solo has all the justification
for the review title. One of those songs, which you just have to hear to
know the actor. Picturised in the beautiful Dal lake, the entire song is
sung in Shikaras. And this Gorilla is performing all his special antics
and praising a debutante Sharmila. He touches his toes, then jerks his
head, then jumps in the boat, then ... . BTW, I am really a fan of this
Gorilla. Afterall monkey is a very funny animal. :-)
---------------------------
Somebody complained about getting confused with this "Gorilla" clue :-)
I am sorry, but nobody else complained ! 44/47 !!
Srini - Strongly object to defamation of a gorilla as a monkey
Rajiv - The shoot must have been quite tough, with boats coming together
and moving apart for the song, and stars falling overboard ;).
Ravindra - And you can say that again for Rafi-Saheb:
taareef karooN kyaa us ki, jis ne tumheiN banaayaa!
SONG : ye chaand sa roshan chehara, ...., taarif karu kya uski ...
MOVIE : Kashmir Ki Kali
ACTORS : Shammi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore
SINGERS : Rafi
MUSIC : O.P.Nayyar
LYRICS : S.H.Bihari
------------------------------------------------------------------------
7.
This song is picturised entirely in a lift. No yaar, how can it be from
"Ek duje ke liye" ? That was SPB. This is a Rafi quiz. :-) Don't jump to
conclusions before I finish the clues. OK :-) This time it's Dharmendra,
who has forcefully trapped Vaiju in the lift. The lift goes up and down,
up and down, and again, and again. The villian Manmohan keeps on chasing
it. But Dharmendra, who thinks that he is becoming a "Poet", is pretty
busy in convincing Vaiju, that they should "keep on loving". Brilliant ?
Yes, so Vaiju has to smile and sharmofy in the end. FYI, MD = SJ.
---------------------------
Sridhar - Why do some people have so much against SJ when they gave us
such good tunes :-)
Man3! - Your keep on loving:clue was totally misleading..
Yes, and I am sorry for this. :-( It unncessarily suggested Pyar Kiye Ja.
SONG : maiN kahiN kavi na ban jaau, tere pyar me ai kavita
MOVIE : Pyar Hi Pyar
ACTORS : Dharmendra, Vaijayantimala
SINGERS : Rafi
MUSIC : Shankar-Jaikishan
LYRICS : Hasrat Jaipuri
------------------------------------------------------------------------
8.
Dharmendra did not become a Shayar in the previous song, but Jeetendra
is already a one here. Both he and Mala Sinha are travelling on a train.
He sees her in a mirror, and sings this Rafi solo requesting her to show
her lovely (???) face again. The title song, the first song in the movie,
love at first sight for both etc. etc. MD again are SJ.
---------------------------
Latika & Prabha - Thanx to Spring and Sony ka dabba
Ketan - Do I see a split in the Raffians? Two consecutive Shanky-J's.
Would love to see what Sami has to say.
Chetan - Come on ! You have seen Indian Railways mirrors. Even a monster
can look good if seen through the double deception of an IR
mirror and a shayar's imagination ;)
SONG : rukh se zaraa naqaab uTHa do, mere huzur
MOVIE : Mere Huzur
ACTORS : Jeetendra, Mala Sinha
SINGERS : Rafi
MUSIC : Shankar Jaikishan
LYRICS : Hasrat Jaipuri
------------------------------------------------------------------------
9.
What Jeetendra wanted in previous song is the same as what Rishi wants
in this song. But he is not so polite. He is challenging Mukri, Neetu's
father. Of course he succeeds. A Qawwali. Rishi is on stage, while, Neetu,
her father and his zanaana are in viewers. But the most prominent viewer
is the Big B ! He has done superb acting as usual. Remember the scene
in the song where he takes out a "notoN ki mala" ? Manmohan Desai's first
big money grosser. MD are LP.
---------------------------
Sridhar - This 'gorilla' relative also has some great tunes and debutante
females to sing them to! Strange coincidence .
Ramki - Yuck! stupid song :) Was this the only song Rafi sang for Rishi?
Why not 'Dard-e-dil, dard-e-jigar...' from Karz? :( Much better, IMHO.
SONG : parda hai, parda hain, parde ke pichhe pardaanashiN hai
MOVIE : Amar, Akbar, Anthony
ACTORS : Rishi Kapoor, Nitu Singh, Amitabh Bachchan, Mukri
SINGERS : Rafi
MUSIC : Laxmikant-Pyarelal
LYRICS : Anand Bakshi
------------------------------------------------------------------------
10.
Remember those hands ? Hands coming out of window grills ? Should be a
clue enough for the Hindi movie fanatics :-) Well, it's Sanjeev Kumar
this time who is a Shayar gone mad. Why do these filmi Shayar's are also
good singers ? Anyway, SanjeevK has given a great performance here. He
is mad, and in one of his fits misbehaves with his admirer turned nurse,
Mumtaz. She decides to dump this not-so-funny-"toy", but he calls on
Rafi for singing this solo to stop her. MD are LP. BTW, do you remember
how Shekhar Kapoor used these "hands scene" in the parody in Mr.India ?
---------------------------
As many said, the "Hands" were sufficient clue !! We really are great
fans of movies ! 45/47 !!
Rajiv - 'hands poking out from the window grills' is unique to this song.
Man3 - TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EAZZZZZZZZZ
SONG : kihlauna, jaan kar tum to, mera dil toD jaate ho
MOVIE : Khilauna
ACTORS : Sanjeev Kumar, Mumtaz
SINGERS : Rafi
MUSIC : Laxmikant-Pyarelal
LYRICS : Anand Bakshi (?)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
11.
Rafi has sung for some heroines as well :-) Take Biswajeet as an example.
Here is one of those many songs where the hero (!) is moving about in
a jeep looking for a life-mate. They always find one ! God, if I had
Rafi's voice and enough money to buy a car, I would have done the same !
Asha Parekh and her friends are going on bicycles. MD is OPNayyar.
---------------------------
Ketan - Actually I have thought of the same, but just wished for KK's
voice instead. After all that is what won him Madhubala, right?
So we know who is better, right? :)
Sridhar - I'm still not sure if it was an Impala or an open jeep
Ikram - Just for spiting me you went ahead and put the Impala song !! :)
Pintu ji ! Ab maiN kya kahuN ? :-)
Arun - KK hasn't sung for any dumbo, except ofcourse for himself ;-)
Half of Rafi songs are sung for dumbos.
Otherwise these dumbos wouldn't have lasted 2 movies :-)
SONG : pukaarata chala huN maiN, gali gali bahaar ki
MOVIE : Mere Sanam
ACTORS : Biswajeet, Asha Parekh
SINGERS : Rafi
MUSIC : O.P.Nayyar
LYRICS : S.H.Bihari

"Jaani, yeh acting hai. Dialogue_baazi nahiN. Agar Hindusthani Romeo
bananaa hai, to cheharepar thodaasa expression bhi laanaa zaruri hai.
Warnaa, ye public tumhare patthar jaise chehare par patthar maaregi".
Sorry Rajkumar fans :-) The pair Rajkumar and Priya Rajvansh was the
worst choice for this famous love-story. As all famous love stories
necessarily separate the lovers, this pair also gets separated. Then
Rajkumar goes about looking for his love. In forests, in different cities,
everywhere in "the world which seems useless" to him now. Really a superb
Madanmohan composition. A Rafi solo great to hear but horrible to watch.
---------------------------
We have two opposite opinions here !
Ravindra - The only saving grace [of picturisation] is that Rajkumar gets
all the dar-dar ki ThokareiN that he deserves.
Rajiv - aap anyaay kar rahe haiN !! Only because he doesn't fit the Hindi
actor mold ;-) :-).
SONG : ye duniya, ye mehfil, mere kaam ki nahiN
MOVIE : Heer - Ranza
ACTORS : Raajkumar
SINGERS : Rafi
MUSIC : Madanmohan
LYRICS : Raja Mehdi Ali Khan
------------------------------------------------------------------------
13.
It's their SuhaagRaat ! The hero is praising the heroine's beauty !
Comparing her with "Chaand" ! Now, now. It's not "chaudaviN ka chaand".
How many times should I tell you to read the complete clue, before you
jump and say, "Hey this is too easy, it's ...". :-) Anyway, the hero
is Sanjay Khan and his wife is Zeenat ! Did I hear someone saying "No,
that was an anticlimax" :-) But the song is good. No idea about the MD
and the lyricist. But the tune and lyrics are quite good. The comparisons
range from Chaand, Mai, Phool, Kali, Mir ki GHazal, Khayam ki Rubaai and
what not. The title role is played by Raj Kapoor !
---------------------------
As many pointed out it's by RDB ! So the Taariq-Kajal isn't the first
RDB song in this quiz. This is the first one. My name features in Arun's
blacklist because of my "no idea" about "MD/Lyricist" :-)
One reason for including this song, was the following lines. Which I
like, as it features the great Shayar Mir's name
MOVIE : Abdullah
ACTORS : Sanjaykhan, Zeenat
SINGERS : Rafi
MUSIC : R.D.Burman
LYRICS : Majrooh (?)

14.
Kalyanaji-Anandji have many "gems" with all 3 great singers. One of them
is Rafi, the others - you figure out :-) In this song Shashi Kapoor is
Nanda's Kashmiri Guide. He is reciting a Love Story to her. The movie
name is of course neither "Guide" nor "Love Story". Nanda is travelling
on a horse, and if her hoarse voice had not been recorded with this nice
song, it could have been another great Rafi solo. All the stanzas of this
song have different tunes !
---------------------------
Ravindra - "Hoarse" voice is right, but her laugh sounds more like
"horse voice" ;-)
Srini - I feel that the song will lose some of its charm if Nanda's voice
is removed it sort of contrasts with Rafi's voice.
SONG : ek thaa gul, aur ek thi bulbul
MOVIE : Jab Jab Phool Khile
ACTORS : Shashi Kapoor, Nanda
SINGERS : Rafi
MUSIC : Kalyanji - Anandji
LYRICS : Anand Bakshi (?)

15.
This film was released and Kaka became the first Superstar of Bollywood.
It also made Kishore Kumar the #1 popular singer, snatching it from Rafi.
True Rafian, I am, this leaves me perplexed. Because there were good
songs by Rafi also in this film. Here Rajesh Khanna and Farida Jalal are
debating whether she loves him or not ! Very enjoyable duet lyrics,
superb tune by SDB. And the way he makes her say "yes" in the end is
also funny, if you are really listening to the song on a Monday :-)
---------------------------
The ONLY song which was guessed by everybody !! So the quiz wasn't
universally simple, everybody had his good share, different than others.
This also attracted strong KKKlan comments :-) Naturally !
Ketan - Would have sounded better on KK.
Srini - Are saab Rafi ke gaane acche the par Mere sapnon ki rani ke
saamne is film ke tho kya us saal ke sare gane fite pad gaya.
Ramki - Aur aaj somvaar bhi hai :) [He REALLY sent his entry on a Monday]
SONG : baagoN me bahaar hai, ...., to tumko mujhse pyaar hai
MOVIE : Aradhana
ACTORS : Rajesh Khanna, Farida Jalal
SINGERS : Rafi, Asha
MUSIC : S.D.burman
LYRICS : Anand Bakshi (?)

16.
Another movie which had songs by both KK and Rafi for a Superstar was
directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. And of course the Rafi song stands
out :-) This time it's the ultimate Big B. Coincidentally the MD is SDB
again. A movie about "Male Ego", has out of the world performance by
both Amitabh and Jaya. They are singing this at their wedding party, and
the world gets to hear Jaya's voice for the first time. Do you remember
the scene when Amitabh touches his own lips with his index finger and
looks at Jaya ? What expressions Jaya's face shows ! I wish the Ravinas
and the Karishmas watch this scene at least once.
---------------------------
Just read the first 2 opinions in a flow ....
Sridhar - Yes! We gave it to them KKKlaners in this movie!!
Arun - Really? ;-) Well, not a bad excuse for a rafian!
Ravindra - "Demure" - Jaya's expression can be summed up in this one word.
SONG : teri bindiya re, haaye haaye, teri bindiya re
MOVIE : Abhiman
ACTORS : Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhaduri
SINGERS : Rafi, Lata
MUSIC : S.D.Burman
LYRICS : Majrooh

17.
Do you know who is Taariq ? Or who is Kajal Kiran ? But we Rafinas know.
Because "we are no less than anybody" ! But it's pity, that I have to
select this pair to present this first RDB song in this quiz. Kajal and
Rishi Kapoor are having a date. Taariq, her lover since their childhood
doesn't find this enjoyable. So he gets hold of a microphone and starts
singing their childhood song. I really don't know why they sang this
song in their childhood ? Perhaps they saw tomorrow :-)
---------------------------
So it's not the first RDB song here. It was 13th.
Srini - Are Nostradamus ke pote honge !
Ravindra - The other singer in this song is Sushma Shreshtha.
Ketan - RDB fulfilling his promise to Rafi that he would give him(Rafi)
a song that would get him the Filmfare award. A promise he made
to him in 1969.
Manish - who is taariq? who is kaajalkiran? but "we are no less than
anybody" was a give away...
SONG : kya huaa tera vaadaa, wo kasam wo iraadaa
MOVIE : Ham Kisise Kam NahiN
ACTORS : Taariq, Kajal Kiran, Rishi Kapoor
SINGERS : Rafi, Sushma Shreshtha
MUSIC : R.D.Burman
LYRICS : Majrooh

Sadhana, the "beauty", could have hardly found any Joy in "travelling"
with this Mukherjee. But she had to. And she had to sing this wonderful
duet with him. Superb Sitar pieces in the interludes. MD is OPN, so it's
a Rafi-Asha duet. Picturised in beautiful Kashmir locations. There is
also a kid with them. In fact because the kid signals Sadhana that her
hero is mad and she should sing together, she starts off.
---------------------------
This of all the clues, turned out to be the decider !!! :-( 15/47 !!!!!
The "SHE STARTS OFF" was questioned by almost everybody. So I guess, I
must plead guilty. What I had in my mind was, as Neeraj Malhotra wrote -
- unless you meant that she starts off singing along after the kid
gestures.
YES ! YES !! and YES !!! There is "she should sing together" isn't it ?
But the confusion CANNOT be held responsible for mistaking the original
song for other songs in the movie. As it doesn't apply to any other duet
in the movie too !! As the "superb sitar interludes", was really
sufficient. Also the "kids gesture that he is mad" is unique. But then
you MUST remember the picturisation ! That's what the quiz is about !!
This was a clue which had NO hints about the lyrics. A real Chitrahaar
clue, and not a Shabdahaar clue. So I hope you accept my case. It was a
totally unintended 'googlie' !
Ravindra - tum jo yooN hi 'quiz'oN ko banaate rahe

SONG : aap yuN hi agar hamse milte rahe, dekhiye ek din ...

MUSIC : O.P.Nayyar
LYRICS : S.H.Bihari

The ugly Premnath was a hero sometime back. God ! He even had this song
by Rafi for him. Premnath is tied up to a tree. His heroine is ill. But
he saves her life by singing this "immortal love" song. Since he is away
from her tent (where a Chinease-like doctor is trying to save her); she
can hear only Rafi's voice and cannot see Premnath's face. Otherwise I
am sure she wouldn't have regained her consciousness. The movie name is
that of a tyrrant who attacked India. No, Premnath didn't play the title
role, although it suited him. I am getting a feeling that this clue will
decide the winners :-) But trust me, it's a great song.
---------------------------
Chetan - One of those "throat-bleeding" pitches of Rafi esp. in the
final few "chalee aaa...."s.
Rajiv - If anyone's seen the movie even once, your description cannot
fail to remind them of this song immediately.
This turned out to be true ! This was far from being the decider. The
song has been played too often on Chitrahaar (the TV waalaa :-) ) But
still I was not totally wrong. 27/47 ! Some confused it with a song
from Sikandar-e-azam, as the Pstats match that one too !! But I think
those who could decrypt - "immortal love" song - guessed it correct.
SONG : muhabbat zinda rehati hai, muhabbat mar nahiN sakati
MOVIE : Chengiz Khan
ACTORS : Premnath, Beena Roi
SINGERS : Rafi
MUSIC : Hansraj Behl
LYRICS : Qamar Jalalabadi (? courtsey Ketan)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
20.
Sadhana's double role ! Madanmohan's music !! A suspense movie !!! And
I am sure, by now, you have learned not to make early decisions. :-)
It's not "Woh kaun thi" ! This starred Sunil Dutt, whose song you have
to guess. Now Sunil Dutt's Sadhana wife is dead, but her look-alike is
chasing him like a crooked shadow. He finds it difficult to take any
more, surrenders himself to the memory of his wife and starts "crying".
An amazing Rafi solo, a characteristic Madanmohan song.
---------------------------
I could have added that "it's a Raj Khosalaa movie" ! Yes, it would
have still matched both the movies :-)
Ravindra - Yeah, why shouldn't he cry? With a wife like Sadhana, any
one who loses her should cry.
This BTW, is MY alltime fav. song.
SONG : aap ke pehloo me aakar ro diye
MOVIE : Mera Saya
ACTORS : Sunil Dutt, Sadhana
SINGERS : Rafi
MUSIC : Madanmohan
LYRICS : Rajendra Krishna

This could have been the title song for the latest Manirathnam movie !
Topped the Binaka charts in 1957 (?), is one of those many songs where
Rafi displayed his voice adaptation for a particular actor. Yes ! The
comedy champion Johny Walker. Many Guru Dutt movies had OPNayyar as the
MD, and so is this. So the ghodaagaadi has to be there. But Johny Walker
is complaining about the city and it's Trams, Motors and Mills. It's a
duet with Geeta Dutt.
---------------------------
A lot has been said on RMIM about Rafi-Johny Walker combos.
SONG : ai dil hai mushkil jeenaa yahaaN, ..., ye hai Bombay meri jaaN
MOVIE : C.I.D.
ACTORS : Johny Walker, ??
SINGERS : Rafi, Geeta Dutt
MUSIC : O.P.Nayyar
LYRICS : Majrooh (?)

I don't know the name of actor for whom Rafi sang this song ! But trust
me, even you don't need to know it. MD LP won the Filmfare award for
this movie. A story about the friendship of a blind and a handicapped !
So you got the name of the movie :-) But which song ? Here is the
situation. The blind friend is the singer. He is singing and the crowd
has gathered around him. The handicapped is standing beside him and
collecting money. In the background is the hero Sanjaykhan (?) waiting
for the heroine, a nurse. Please don't feel bad, if you can't guess the
song. Take the following advice carefully ! It's the difficult clues
which will always remain on your mind, the easier ones just come and go.
So don't worry :-)
---------------------------
Now, now, now ! Everybody guessed it's from Dosti. The picturization
info. was of course enough to decide which song. But I had given a free
advice ! Some couldn't decrypt it, and paid the penalty. Those who missed
it, read the words "come and go" again :-) 35/47
Surjit Singh - Last three lines of your clue gave it away
Manish - Well, free "advice" helps sometimes
Sridhar - I wonder if ANYONE knows the actors' names.
Well, Ketan and Malini-Balaji KNOW the names !
SONG : raahi manawa dukh ki chinta kyuN satati hai, dukh to apna saathi hai
sukh hai ek chaaoN dhalati, aati hai jaati hai
MOVIE : Dosti
ACTORS : Sushil kumar, Sudhir kumar (courtsey Ketan)
SINGERS : Rafi
MUSIC : Laxmikant - Pyarelal
LYRICS : Majrooh

23.
Since there has been some discussion on the remixes, here is the one,
whose remix is perhaps most popular. A Rafi-Asha duet, music by RDB and
for the pair Vijay Arora and Zeenat. Here is some more info. to bring
a procession of memories ! It's a party song. Zeenat is trying to fool
Vijay Arora. She wonders whether he will go away after stealing her
heart. He assures her otherwise. Asha's voice is mind boggeling, while
Rafi's voice in contrast is very composed and soothing.
---------------------------
Easy one. But how many of you noticed "a procession of memories" :-)
Ramki - Rafi for Vijay Arora is worse than Rafi for Bharat Bhushan :((
Arun - Abhay, why don't you be frank and accept that Rafi voice is only
ordinary (if not bad)in this song ;-)
OK. Let me be frank and say that Rafi's voice is extra-ordinary here !
SONG : chura liya hai tumne jo dil ko
MOVIE : YaadoN Ki Baaraat
ACTORS : Vijay Arora
SINGERS : Rafi, Asha
MUSIC : R.D.Burman
LYRICS : Majrooh
------------------------------------------------------------------------
24.
Here is a song for no actor ! It's a background song, which perhaps has
no relation to the scene. Quite surprising, as the movie was by the
great B.R.Chopra and lyrics by Sahir. Music by OPNayyar. Dilip and
Ajit are friends, both in love with Vajayantimala. In the Mandir, she is
going to offer flowers. If she offers yellow flowers, then she will be
Dilip's, otherwise Ajit will win her. So was their pact. But Dilip's
sister changes the flowers to make Ajit loose. She loves Ajit, so you
see it was a rectangle, and not a tringle. Ajit feels cheated and the
rivalry starts. Anyway, this has nothing to do with the lyrics. So guess
the movie name, and try to figure out this Bhajan. And trust God, He
might be late in doing justice to the quiz participants, but He always
does it in the end :-) :-) I am really becoming a master of Cryptology !
---------------------------
Again, the picturisation info was good enough. But some missed the last
line as in Dosti clue ! 33/47 !! You cannot complain !
Sridhar - There! you see it was not just Ghodagadi always.
Manish - Another act of decoding the crypt.
SONG : aanaa hai to aa, raah me kuchh bhed nahiN hai
bhagwaan ke ghar del hai, andher nahiN hai
MOVIE : Naya Daur
ACTORS : Dilip kumar, Vaijayatimala, Ajit
SINGERS : Rafi
MUSIC : O.P.Nayyar
LYRICS : Sahir

25.
Indian movies - silly musicals ??? Watch this, if you think so. Let me
assure you, you won't be able to decide who is better. Rafi ? Sahir ?
SDB ? or Guru Dutt ? Another movie about a Shayar. Guru Dutt outdoes
himself in acting, direction and photography. Rafi's voice also suited
naturally to him. He enters the hall, his book is being published
posthumously. His hatred for this cruel world comes out, as Rafi goes
from the lower scale to the higher scale. Sahir is at his best. And SDB
is great as he decides to give the control to Rafi, Sahir and Guru Dutt.
You won't notice Mala Sinha or Rehmaan or Mehmood or even Waheeda. All
you will remember is Guru Dutt's silhouette, with light coming from the
behind. The last song in the quiz is also the last song in the movie.
---------------------------
Sridhar - Perfect climax!
SONG : ye mehloN, ye takhtoN, te taazoN ki duniya
MOVIE : Pyasa
ACTORS : Guru Dutt, Waheeda Rehman, Mala Sinha, Rehman
SINGERS : Rafi
MUSIC : S.D.Burman
LYRICS : Sahir
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Have you read all that ??? Congrats ! :-)
Here is the much awaited list of winners. In the ascending order of the
scores. There was no tie-breaker, so within the same score, there is
NO difference. The order does not reflect anything !
16 Madhuri Jarwala
17 Mala Acharya
17 Rahul Shanker
18 Imran Mirza
18 Srinath Ekkad
19 Dhaval & Medha
19 Vitay Kodagali
The concentration of many people at the same score starts now ! It was
really an easy quiz.
20 Anju Bhatnagar
20 Neeraj Deshmukh, Swapna and Indrani
20 Preetianjan Panda
20 Raj Ganesan
20 Samir Ayachi
20 Senthil and Ram Prasad
21 Ajay P Nerurkar
21 Latika & Prabha
21 Mohan Rathore
21 Rajesh Munshi
22 Aniruddha Deglurkar
22 Arun Verma (KKKlaner)
22 Deepak Dhamdhere
22 Harish & Namrata Patil
22 Rajesh Kunjithaya and Venkat Mantri
22 Marella Sridhar
22 Pintu Diwana (Shashikant Joshi)
22 Ravi K. Sista
22 Sadanand Manish
Now the third spot !!
23 Ikram A Khan
23 Milind and
23 Praveen Saxena
23 Renu & Sujata
23 Srinivasaraghavan T.
The silver medalists ............
24 Balaji & Malini (Husband-wife pair)
24 Hema & Shyamala
24 Kuntal Shah, Nikhil Lad, Kiran Godbole
24 Rajiv Shridhar
24 Shalini Razdan
All of them except Shalini missed the "Aap yunhi agar humse milte rahe"
clue. While Shalini missed the "ye mehloN ye takhtoN .." !!!
And the GOLD medalists .....................
We have NINE (9) of them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
25 Ajit Dandekar & Roopa Dhawan
25 Chetan Vinchhi & Ashok Dhareshwar
25 Harmesh Kaur & Surjit Singh
25 Kalyan Kolachala and Atul Gupta
25 Ketan Dholkiya
25 Prince Kohli & Neeraj Malhotra
25 Ramki Krishnan and Madhav Rao
25 U.V.Ravindra & Pavan Kumar Desikan
25 Sami
An easssssssssssy quiz, I know. But let me say more about the winners.
Chetan and Ashok, just missed it last time, they have managed it now.
Harmesh Kaur and Surjit Singh sent their entry in one day !! They solved
the quiz in just 3 Hrs ! Kalyan and Atul are going to do the next quiz.
Ketan is a loyal KKKlaner :-) But his score speaks for his love for Rafi !!
Prince-Neeraj team and UVR-Pavan are doing a repeat success and should
be looking for a hat-trick ! Sami is a well known Rafian, he HAD to
score 100 % !! Ajit-Roopa and Ramki-Madhav are joining to top. So all
these should expect stiff competition now !
So congratulations to all of you ! And thanks once again to all the
participants !
The next quizzes are .....
3. General by Kalyan and Atul
4. Lata Special by Ravindra and Pavan
5. Naye zamaane je geet by Neeraj Deshmukh
6. Badalate saathi by Neeraj Malhotra and Prince
Thanks to all of you for keeping this idea alive !
Hope you enjoyed this quiz as much as me.
Thanks to you again. And looking forward to the next quizzes ....
- Abhay.
Happy !

And what a marvellous way to salute RafiSahab! He lives. Will always
live. I hope the Mukesh-philes are alert too for his upcoming Aug 27

^^^^^^^
This is a highly misleading clue. You call that a walk? I don't know
how to accurately describe that kind of biped locomotion with a bent
torso, cross-paddling of the hands and stochastic nods of the head. I
tried it myself and got neither thrust nor lift. I suspect it could
be possible on planets with very low g. Only that priceless clown,
DevSahab, could have pulled it off here on earth.

=> Hello RMIM !
=>
=> Here are the answers and results of the second Chitrahaar quiz dedicated
=> to the great singer Mohammed Rafi. Today is 31st July 1995. Exactly 15
=> years before, on 31st July 1980, Mohammed Rafi passed away. Results of
=> this quiz are being announced on this day to offer a unique Shraddhanjali
=> to him.
=>
A great way to offer respects to a great singer and an exemplary human
being.
=> Hushshsh ! They all had a chance to get amnesty for their sins, but they
=> have ruined it :-) :-)
Well put, Abhay!
Wonderful as the quiz was, and noble the intentions, I can't hold back
my itching fingers for a bit of NetPicking ;-) ;-) No offence meant
to anybody, especially Abhay. Some people may say that being a
Rafi-an and picking nets (sorry, nits ;-)) in a Shraddhanjali like
this is sacrilegeous. To them, my answer is that (as I have said
earlier on RMIM) RECTITUDE in everything is what Mohammed Rafi taught
us.

=> SONG : aanaa hai to aa, raah me kuchh bhed nahiN hai

One mistake and one typo, here. The actual lyric is, IMO,
aanaa hai to aa, raah meiN kuchh pher nahiN hai
bhagwaan ke ghar der hai, andher nahiN hai
Besides rhyming correctly with "andher," "raah meiN pher (nahiN) hona"
is a popular "lokokti," which, I think, refers to the fact that the
path is very much the "straight and narrow," and not the "long,
difficult and sinuous one." Please check up, Abhay.

Sorry for all the netpicks, RMIM. I really enjoyed this quiz
immensely.
Thanks and regards,
Ravindra.
A GAandhaar_DHAivat.
And guess how did I make my day!!!! Ashok sent me a cassette with some
superb oldies, some I had teh words written some not. And right in
there was an old forgotten song (coz not heard for a long time)
'Basant hai aayaa, rangeelaa, basant hai aayaa' And Rafi had a 'small'
piece in it, but the piece was fast paced, classical piece similar and
better (maybe) than 'nache man mora'. It really made my day!! This
(semi) classical thing of Rafi really hits me good, I mean I like
poetry, and I like classical music, and these gems are a good blend of
both, the amalgam of theory (classical music) and practice (lyrics).
Come to think of it, in summer of 79 I moved to Port Blair and so in
80, when the fateful day came, I *really* don't remember the sorrow.
I don't even remember hearing teh nes. I do remember *somehow* about
Mukesh's demise. I was really not into p-stats.
Maybe at that time, I didn't realize what it meant! I was just a kid
then, bhai! baateN hi baD.ee baD.ee kartaa hooN, umra to jyaadaa
naheeN hai :-)) But, in a way I think, I am happy, I didn't have to
face teh news. e.g. I really felt horrible when Smita Patil died. And
VERY angry at the stupidity of the doctors/nurse.
>participants. It's NOT in any specific order.

Well, the following list IS in an order!! If you add the number
corresponding to teh first letters of the first and last name and
subtract the number of characters in the email address before teh '@'

are all arranged. :-)))))))

Because Suyodhana (might as well give myself a sunaam!) has become too old
to learn new tricks. So, he needs Jayadratha. :))

Praayash_h ye chakravyooh to aap ka hi banaayaa huaa hai aur
vyooh se nishkramaN karnaa sulabh hai! (i.e., uttaron ke liye
Uttaraa ki sahaayataa aap kyun nahin lete?)

Well, I don't mean to sound imperious or anything like that, Pintu,
but I'm sure *this* is precisely what the "straight and narrow" means.
It's an expression in English, referring, as far as I know, to the
fact that the path is straight (not "crook"ed ;-)).
Guess you thought I meant it literally. ;-)
Ravindra.
A GAandhaar_DHAivat.
Bhai ye kya ho raha hai!!!! Shashi, you are a totally confused man!!
How many times have you mistaken Rafi for Mahendra kapoor and Vice versa. ;-)
May be I should keep a count.
As far as I know the above song was by Mahendra kapoor.

Three cheers for Pintu!! I second this whole heartedly. After all, I stood
4th if you consider only "akele maharathi". :-)

Pintu, do you still think so ;-) May be you wanna say

Cheers

No, not literally. But look at your next phrase, here it is copied:
>=> >path is very much the "straight and narrow," and not the "long,
>=> >difficult and sinuous one." Please check up, Abhay.
"and not the" .. suggests that you are saying "straight and narrow" mean
"short and easy" . And THAT is what I was clarifying :-))
-- Pintu Diwana
I really have no words to express my mistake, but I think Rafi won't
mind if I loved MK's piece. I really don't know why this has happened
quite a few times now. Yes, quite a few MK songs, specially the
"Rafi" types, I very easily think it is Rafi. Maybe it says something
about MK :-))) (Obviously it says something about me :-))) )
Another thing, I was really surprised to find MK in Dharamputra,
since I didn't think he was singing since such a long time! They
never have these things in history books :-(((
Any other MK fans, I am very sorry.
And die-hard Rafians, this was NOT intentional. I love Rafi's music
very much, but this transfer effect is the reason of my past images
of childhood. Some songs I have not heard for so long, and I have
only this LONG time back image!!

Now here is a good pun! Yes, I seem to be getting into these MK/Rafi
vyoohs quite often. Apart from a few irritated RMIMers (MK fans), no
one has yet organised a gherao and khdeD.o me :-))))
But what is this about Uttaraa's help? didn't get this one.
Oh! maybe I can post on the net asking for some RJGK partner??
Hello!!!! Anybody out there, Uttaraa?? Renu, Shalini, Vandana, Azra,
Malini, Neha, who would like to give in joint entries in RJGKs and
dikhaa-o this Abhimanyu a way out of this vyooh of these Maharathees
:-)))))
Maybe Renu, you can be my partner in RJGK26, what say????
And specially, drained out after teh RJGK25, you wud like to take it
easier on the next one, right? :-))))

ab jale par namak to naa chhiD.ako Ashok! Please, I am already
paani-paani to have mentioned such a thing on Rafi's anniversary. :-((

I really can't understand this "sore-loser" symptom which has
suddenly started cropping up over the RMIM ever since several
"able RMIM-ers" have lost the top spot in the Chitrahaar.
arey bhai, iss khel kaa naam hai "symbiosis." "Synergetic
cooperation" if you like. Basically, (our) two heads are better
than (your) one, and all that sort of thing. ;-) :) :) :)
Ravindra.
It was *Porus* who won, not Alexander, remember! ;-) ;-)

Abhimanyu...fight ur own battles and find your way out of the chakra

waise be an Uttara would only be a distraction...so i speak on behalf
of all my female friends on rmim(sorry girls..i just didnt like it that
we were asked to be uttaras)...
jab chakravyuh se bahar nikal na nahi aata tou phir andar jaane ki risk

Oh Neha! you can't even take a joke lightly!! Bhai, see the
mega-smilie after that "call for Uttaraas" :-))
And I meant for joint entries on rmim, else I am a happily married
man, just that my actual Uttara :-)) is in India right now.
(Now you can question my happiness there !!!!)
So no one has anything to be worried about. Is that not clear enough
from my comments in PRsPD :-)))
I am not looking for any "soul-mate" or anything, lat me make that
102% clear :-)))) raam! raam! raam! Neha! didn't expect that from a
regular like you :-)) (i mean to misunderstand a light humor)
>jab chakravyuh se bahar nikal na nahi aata tou phir andar jaane ki risk

Aisi koi baat nahin hai, it was all in a fun, seeing that the toppers
of Chitrahaar were teams of two, and that too, most of them big time
maharathi's themselves.
>------------------------------------------------------------------------
>But every road is rough to me...that has no friend to cheer it..........
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
See your own .sig says it, and that is why I was just asking if anyone
wanted to give joint entries.
Sorry if you got offended, but till now everyone has taken it lightly,
the way it was intended to be :-))

: =>
: A great way to offer respects to a great singer and an exemplary human

: Wonderful as the quiz was, and noble the intentions, I can't hold back

: => Here is a song for no actor ! It's a background song, which perhaps has

: => Ajit are friends, both in love with Vajayantimala. In the Mandir, she is

Sorry Abhay sahab,
I think that there is a faQeer singing this song. I seem to remember the
long queue of devotees passing single file like and this dude standing
slightly away from them and singing it.
And I got a nit that even UVRji missed. The supreme nitpicker is getting
careless :))
Later,
Ikram.
