Urdu Dictionary Web Interface

Hello RMIMers...
I am sure all of you must have used the Urdu Dictionary
on the Web sometime or the other to look up the meanings
of difficult urdu words that we so frequently encounter
in our discussion of lyrics and poetry on this newsgroup.
Well, now you can check out the Web Interface of this
dictionary... at
http://yake.ecn.purdue.edu/~daftary/urdu/urdu.html
It is a forms based interface to the dictionary
which replies to even partial matches of your query
ie the word whose meaning you were looking for...
If any of you have suggestions for the interface,
plz plz lemme know so that I can make the necessary
improvements to it and make it more convenient for you.
Btw, on a similar note... does anyone know the meaning of
the word 'vasl'... i dont know if its urdu, but sounds like
as it is...
i came across this word in these lines...

The word is wasl/vasl which means meeting, union (with the beloved).
The above lines are from a nazm by the great Faiz Ahmed Faiz.
This gives me a chance to say something that I have been long wanting
to. Your question about wasl is indicative of the fact that the on-line
dictionary is far from being comprehensive. It is necessary that some
efforts be made to increase the number of words in this lexicon. I
urge RMIM-ers to look through the dictionary and add and all such
words to it as they find lacking ...

your answer reminds me of one more Q that i long wanted to
clarify... what is the difference between a ghazal and nazm?

This is very true... i have added the word vasl to it already.
plz keep your input to the dictionary coming... better it gets

The word reminds me of the following lines.
"Vasl ki raat mein, baat hi baat mein,
yu tera muskurana gazab ho gaya,
(I'm not sure whether it was muskuran or something else)
Chaandni chuup gayi, chaand sharma gaya,

Chandni raat mein chaand ke saamne,

This Nazm is written by Faiz Ahmed Faiz

noticed that the title of the book is 'Selected poems of Faiz in English
Rendered by Daud Kamal.' Perhaps the keyword is 'rendered'!

Here's the transcript of the nazm that I took from the book 'Faiz
Ahmed Faiz' by Shiv K. Kumar. The same transcript also appears in
another book (a collection) called 'saare suKHan hamaare' which
contains all published works of Faiz rendered into the Hindi script.

this nazm to English thus:

Every travail of Life thoughts of you make insignificant,
It is your beauty that lends permanence to Spring,
What other joys does the world hold besides your eyes?
Fate would bow to me if I were to attain your person,
Alas! It was not to be! 'Twas but a figment of my imagination.
All around I see
Sinister black magic of countless centuries
Brocaded in silk and satin,
Flesh imbrued in blood being
Sold in every street and bazaar,
Festering bodies rotting in the kiln of disease.
Your beauty beckons even today, but what can be done:
The eyes wander back to these troublesome scenes.
What can be done?
There are troubles in Life stronger than Love,
There are pleasures in Life stronger than Love.

Thanks, Ravindra, and others who posted/emailed me articles and
explanation of difficult words. I now compeletly understand the nazm
(or so I think!). No matter what, I'm happy! I admit I had hardly
understood the nazm before reading the different interpretations I
received following my request on RMIM.
One down, so many more to go! (I am referring to beshumaar ghazals that
I do not understand but someday I will...)
