When my brother got engaged, he was too casual and following
his college style, went in an old Hawaii chappal. My
grandfather on the other hand had bought a new one just a
couple of days back. So, after the engagement was over, they
found the new chappals (of my granddad) missing. My brother
came out, wore his chappals and was already standing outside
with other guys, when my granddad was unable to find his
chappals. When the ladaki-waale came to know that, they had to
get the chappals hurriedly and were lot of jalo-bhuno-ed over
that!
And in my case, my sister-in-law (brother's wife) already hid
my Kolhapuris (for the LATE night wedding ceremonies) under a
mooD.haa in the ladaki-waalaas ghar. And my brother (who didn't
have to sit cross legged and hence wore shoes) had removed his
shoes quite prominently. When done with the ceremony, I didn't
realise what my sis-in-law had done, but I had my Kolhapuris in
no time. As for my bro, when they asked him for 'paise de do'
he gladly agreed to stay there if he didn't get his shoes.
Everything being in a spirit of fun, it was good to see their
tricks fail. And hamare begum sahiba, with 15 of her college
friends, sisters etc couldn't get my jote/Kolhapuri -- ye unko
hamesha khed rahegaa!

This reminds me....when I first listened to this song, and even after I had
heard it numerous times later on, one thing left me puzzled always.
What does the phrase, "paise le lo, joote de do" mean? I was sure it
meant something, since the song revolved around it. Plus, I had some
faith on the lyricist too! Then, I met with my parents some months ago.
I asked my Mom what this meant. She gave me a look that said...how come
you don't know about it? I gave her back another look that said...you
don't expect me to know it! Dad was watching the looks going back and
forth, so he jumped in, to save me, perhaps? Dads don't bother with
looks, they speak out! Well, then I got to know the mystery behind it
all.
"Bete tumne bohot saari shaadiyan attend nahi kari hain na isliye
tumhein maloom nahi hai iske baare mein. Shaadiyon mein aise bohot
mezaak kiye jaate hain. Ladki waale ladke waalon ko aise hi paraishaan
karte hain! Mezaak mein joote chupa dete hain aur jab tak paise nahi
dein, joote wapas nahi karte hain..."
"Hmmmm...interesting...to ye traditional hai..."
"Haan..bilkul traditional hai...tabhi to shaadiyon mein itne maze aate
hain. Apart from the fact that ke ek wedding ho rahi hai, aur bhi to
cheezein hoti hain, jaise ke wahin per aur bhi marraiges tai ho jaati
hain.."
"Oh..dangerous..!"
Till now Mom was quiet, now she thinks it's time to jump in..
"Dangerous nahi...it's culture, reeti aur riwaaj.."
"Dangerous nahi to aur kya hai? You go to a marriage to have fun, and
you get fixed...!"
Dad thinks he can handle the situation in a much better way...
"Bete lekin yahi humari heritage hai, aur kitni poorani bhi. Shaadiyan to
ek example hain uska. Hamare yahan shaadiyan kitne zor aur shor ke
saath manaiyee jaati hain. Pehle zamane mein to ye paanch din se bhi
ziyada ka kissa hua karta tha. Geet hua karte the, khoob baaraat ki
khatir-daari hua karti thi aur tabhi to ye saare mezaak bhi hua karte
the...saari zindagi ye kisse yaad rehte the..dulha dulhan ko bhi aur
baaraatiyon ko bhi...ek ehsaas hota tha ke kuch anokha ho raha
hai..shaadi ho rahi hai...roz roz nahi hoti...zindagi mein bas ek baar
hi hoti hai...isliye uski khushi boundless hoti thi.... Ab zara
tabdeeliyan aa gayi hain. Aap ko hi dekhiye...gaane mein suna joote de
do aur paise le lo to samajh mein nahi aaya ke baat kya ho rahi hai..!"
"Ahhhh...accha...jab meri hogi tab mujhe sab maloom ho jaaega..!"
At this point Mom has a lot to contribute, and she does, and the
discussion goes on and on ignited by my seemingly, innocent
question....but I'll stop here!

Now this brings back memories.
An interesting incident regarding 'joota churai' as it is called
happened to me in the Dec. of 93 when my elder brother got married.
I went to India to attend his marraige. I was escorting my brother
as he could hardly see through the huge plethora of garlands hanging
in front of his eyes ('sehra'). After we were seated on the 'diwan'
after taking off our shoes, some of the naughty 'saaliyan' not only
took my elder brother (dulhas) shoes but also mine. They were
probably trying to 'chedo' me too, but I did not crib about it nor
pay any attention to my missing shoes and went around with just
my socks on. I got the word from some 'salis' friends that I should
dish out some cash, but I refused. It was not my day to be made a fool.
Anyway my bhabhi came to my rescue, after the 'nikaah' when we were
chatting she noticed my missing shoes, she asked me where my shoes
are. I said, its fine they are just misplaced. But she understood
and after a few stern glances (by my bhabhi towards the cute saalis) my
shoes were reluctantly returned. Some of the 'saalis' suggested
that I am a spoilsport to have told my bhabhi.
Things went on and on, there was even an antakshari between the girls
side ( my bahbhi has mostly female cousins) and the guys side ( we
have lots of male cousins, few cousin sisters). So now you can imagine
the scenario. The girls were very talented and had lots of their
own compositions making fun of the dulha ( the girls were very well
prepared too, the guys often started shouting when they could
not match the singing abilities of the girls).
I guess I should stop now. I hope this brings back memories for many
of the readers of this group too. Needless to say I enjoyed HAHK and
I had posted my views on this newsgropup also.

Well not always you will come across jute churaanaa. THe first time I
saw in a movie.And talking from my "recent" times :-), yaar this
is the problem if u don't have dynamic(or no) saalis :-) oops. I waited for
that "special" occasion, when jute will be stolen but no jute churaaye
and no jute dedo paise lelo. :-( A severe let down for my friends and
cousins so dulhe raajaa had to come back "sahi salaamat" :-)
kash ab bhii koii mere jute lele ..... :-)
