excellent chemistry! i've listened to this song 500 times and never
get bored. i savor every syllable. i like their contrasting voices yet
how the voices blend together resoundingly in the end! i can't think
of a male duet outside of another rafi - kishore duet that comes even
close in terms of voice quality, expressions, and chemistry.
One perennial favorite of mine is "aaj gaawat man mero jhuum ke" from
Baiju Bawra. In addition to chemistry, this is history :)

1Seene me sulagahte hai armaan- Ainil Biswas - lata Talt - Tarana
2,Jab jab ful khile - Sajja- Lata Talat
3.Ye mulqat ek bahana hai,
and many others.* ( I hope you are limiting to Duet by Male Singers)
The earliest I have heard is Motilal and Ishwarlal from Divali 1940,
"barasaata chhiDii hove aur chaaNdanii hon raaten"
Very good.
Manish meant male-male duets.
C
Earliest = Favorite??
I guess this is true in your case. Your response the the Lata
Surveykshan was highly amusing. It reminded me of a child locked up in
a room and how it would scream and shout and would finally sit down
leaning against the door :)
C
My current favorite is "merii sakhii bataa" - a funny and melodious
Chitalkar-Rafi duet from "Hangaamaa".
I guess the "Rustom Sohraab" qawwali would not qualify here, it being
a triplet?
- Sathya
Here are some more great duets
1) BASANT BAHAR=ketaki gulaab=Pandit Bhimsen Joshi + Manna Dey
2) CHALTI KA NAAM GADI=baabu samajho ishaare=Manna Dey + Kishore Kumar
3) JAGTE RAHO=mai.n jhooTh boliyaa koii naa=Mohammad Rafi + S Balbir
4) JOHNNY WALKER=mu.nh se mat lagaa=Mohammad Rafi + Manna Dey
5) NAYA DAUR=yeh desh hai veer jawaano kaa=Mohammad Rafi + S Balbir
6) PARVARISH=o maamaa o maamaa=Mohammad Rafi + Manna Dey
7) SADHANA=aaj kyuu.n hamse paDadaa hai=Mohammad Rafi + S Balbir
8) SHAHEED=watan ki rahaa= Mohammad Rafi + G M Durrani
9) PHIR SUBAH HOGI=arre phirte the jo .. jis pyaar me.n yeh haal
hai=Mohammad Rafi + Mukesh
10) BHAAGAM BHAAG=he baabu yeh hai zamaanaa=Mohammad Rafi + Kishore
Kumar
I suppose the PADOSAN song = 'ek chatuur naar' (Manna Dey + Kishore
Kumar + Mehmood) would not qualify..

A few of my favourites are:
- Tu Hai Mera Prem Devta - Kalpana
- Kitni Haseen Aaj Baharon Ki Raat Hai - Aadmi
- Huzur Is Qadar Bhi Na Itra Ke Chaliye - Masoom

> 8) SHAHEED=watan ki rahaa= Mohammad Rafi + H Khan Mastana
I am sorry.anyway way fvt. female duet is
Man kyu.N fola re dola adhi raatko.
This is actually a very good duet.
While we are preparing lists, I would like to add
Sangeet Samrat Tansen=sudh bisar gaii aaj=Rafi+Manna
Shahjahan=mere sapano.n kii raanii=Saigal+Rafi (special mention...)

"ham sab chor haiN"
Song:
ham ko haNste dekh zamaanah jaltaa hai
chor bano yaa mor yahaaN sab chaltaa hai!
===============================================================================
This thread reinforces the feeling I had earlier (and my thought when
I saw the first post) that there are very few good male-male duets
(exceptions like "Sudh bisar gayi aaj") and most are average/above
average. This is quite unlike female-female duets where there are a
number of great/extraordinary ones.
Kalyan
I guess you meant *below* average. The overall number of male-male
duets is quite small. To find really good ones among them would be
quite hard. That is partly why this is an interesting thread!
C
chetan! how are you? always great to hear from you!
can you think of a song with just three male singers? i know one from
the movie 50/50 with kishore, madan mohan, and rafi "mere jaisa nahin
milega". there's one part that musical purists will not like but it's
still a lively tune.
why not ? :) that's a good comedy duet. manna and kishore sing well
together fluidly going back and forth.
A Professor's work is never done :)
I think it's disqualified, otherwise I would choose it too. It is, in
my opinion, the finest all-male multi-singer Hindi film song ever! :)
My current favorite is "room jhoom ke bajaao" -- Rafi and Chonkar (SJ,
Shailendra) from Pooja (1954).
-UVR.
"Ever" is an impossible criteria for me so I will restrict myself
to.... um... ok, last year. So some favorites from last year:
'imosanal atyaachaar' (Dev D) by Rangila-Rasila.
'bha.Nvaraa bha.Nvaraa aayaa re' (Kaminey) by Sukhwinder, Kailash Kher
'Khwaab ko raag de' (London Dreams) by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Shankar M
and the fabulous,
'yaaraa maulaa' (Gulaal) by Rahul Ram, Asheem C
And if we can count Shankar M's parts in the song to qualify it as
male duet then,
'ikataaraa' (Wake Up Sid) by Tochi Raina, Shankar M
Vinay
Hah. And this from the very person who "invented" the whole Desert
Island surveykshaN idea! I. Ro. Nic.
-UVR.
Not really. This is exactly why this forgetful guy insists on short-
lists. Memory is fallible. Un. Relia. Ble. :)
Vinay
I haven't read all the responses. But how about the "Kohinoor"
song : "Madhuban men raadhika naache re" ? The peerless Rafi
along with a noted Ustaad !
Afzal
It's a great song, but I have two problems with "madhuban mein
raadhika" when compared to "room jhoom."
(1) visual -- the 'noted Ustad' and his musical caliber are made fun
of! This does not sit well with me.
(2) audio -- the Ustad's segments in the song are like oil to Rafi's
water; their segments do not combine well enough together to produce
an enjoyable admixture. Chonkar's and Rafi's do, in the Pooja song.
Don't get me wrong; there ARE other duets where one of the singers is
clearly the better skilled ("mujhko apne gale lagaa lo" (Rafi, Mubarak
B) comes to mind, as does Doob jaana re (Sonu, Shreya from 'Main, Meri
Patni aur Woh')), but where the final product is superb! In 'madhuban
mein raadhika', however, the Ustad's contributions to that song of
Rafi song are like BP's recent "contributions" to the Gulf of Mexico.
-UVR.
PS: Chonkar + Rafi in "baaT chalat" is a different beast altogether.
That's not the point I was making. I was saying that (as far as I
understand), the aim of the surveykshaNs (not just Lata's) is to
identify "the best Desert Island'able song by [artiste]".
How does it matter how one arrives at the answer: using lists, or in
some other manner? Isn't "The Best" an absolute ranking?
-UVR.
Profjee : I thought your favourite male-male duet was 'bhaarat ke ik
sanaaree kee ham kathaa sunaate hai.n' by Yeshwant-buwa Joshi and
Yeshwant Nikam? Like the Kohninoor song, this is also an instance of a
peerless classical singer carrying a part-time singer.
- dn
But the point *I* was making was that "ever" is such a big period and
has such a large data-set, that I cannot do it without actually going
through (recalling) what that "ever" contains. Restrictions make
things clearer and easier for me.
Vinay
In that case most RMIMers will go for the "Haqeeqat" song. I like it but I
prefer the Kishore-Mukesh duet "Haal chaal theek thaak hai" from Mere Apne.
Besides the usual ones mentioned from Sholay, Padosan, CKNG etc; Kishore-Manna
have a crazy duet in Khalifa which works well on screen. Then there is
Kishore-Bhupinder in Double Cross singing "Dekho hum dono ki yaari". We also
have KK-Rafi singing in Dostana and Yaadon Ki Baarat and Kishore-Rafi-RD singing
what can be called a triplet or 4 individual songs in HKKN.
Ketan
This time the homework is certainly not done properly. I can't believe
you have not heard this 1936 male-male duet (something for Surender
Madani to weep over) :

Maybe I will take only the sound of silence to that desert island....
C
Hmm. So "aaj gaawat man mero" not worth wasting precious cargo room
on your flights eh?
-UVR.
What's so great about it? Goes to show that even great masters can't
do much with an average tune.
Yes a good song. Also "Yaadon ki baaraat" title song falls in the same
category
Aayi Bala - Daal Mein Kaala (Chitalkar + Kishore ) is my hot fav too !
My most fav Rafi-Kishore has to be Sa Re Ga Ma - Chupke Chupke
Good additions.
1985 duet "Yunhi gaate raho" by SPB & KK is also lovely
Don't ask me (what's so great about it). Ask Chetan, who listed it as
his favorite male-male duet.
To me, it is a bit odd that one would take the time to list a song as
one's favorite if it was really not worth being listened to on a day
of peaceful solitude. But that's what appears to be the case (with
Chetan's choice) here.
-UVR.
that's an excellent one! it's extra special because sd burman was
extremely successful with both singers yet this is the only song
featuring both of them together. it leaves me wanting for more because
it's only 2:18. i randomly heard that the song was truncated because
dharmendra showed up late to the shooting of the song. doesn't make
much sense but it does explain why only 2 minutes. anyhow, it's an
excellent composition with sd burman's trademark.
As a lover of women's voice, a male/male duet is anathema to me; so I
will say no more.
MA
I like part 2 of ' bane chahe dushman " song. my other fav. male duet
is " yeh dosti hum nahin" from sholay.
Actually I was referring to another male-male duet that I like
immensely. Only it is not a Hindi Film song. The lateral reference was
intentional. Make what you will of it. Or shoot me - that might be
better than being stuck on a desert island with "ye dosti" :)
C
Ok, I *will* shoot you ... but not because I wish to spare you any
discomfort from "ye dosti". Rather, because you're now confusing me.
See, in your maiden post in this thread, you listed aaj gaawat man
mero *from* Baiju Bawra (so, a film song, clearly) being a perennial
favorite of yours. And it does not appear that in any of your other
posts have you really pointed towards a particular non-film song being
(one of) your favorite(s). And now this.
-UVR.
"I will shoot you but will play "ye dosti" while you are drawing your
last breath" - sadistic!
> Rather, because you're now confusing me.
Unintentionally. I am not sure what is so confusing.

*among male-male duets in Hindi films* It does not automatically
qualify for a desert island. It might, but that is not a given.
> And it does not appear that in any of your other

I will let you figure that one out for yourself :)

Hey, guys, why waste a bullet? Merely playing the song should do the
job.

Sukesh
LOL! Actually merely saying the above is enough - RDB fans will ensure
your safe and immediate delivery to the nether world :)
C
Amazing!
I can't listen to this song in solitude even once. In boozing orgy
perhaps enjoy it a few times.
