"Rang De Basanti" is special, as this was (supposedly penned) and sung
by Shaheed Bhagat Singh when he was going to be hanged. On his way he
kept singing this song "Mera rang de basanti chola maaye"..

Usually Basanti is associated with Sacrifice (as the color of
sacrifice, infact its safforn, which is also present in our national
flag as a symbol of sacrifice) and Bhagat Singh's above lines has made
it very special..

Chola is cloth... Should be reference to the piece of cloth that
covers the dead body..

some other opinions?

hope this helps

with best regards,
Pavan

Cloth, yes, but not a "kafan"! Think of "cholii" and you have the
answer: a "cholaa" is a short jacket or bodice. It is also used to mean
the body in the sense of the body being a garment for whatever resides
in it.

"basantii" arises from the root "basant" (spring) and denotes the
colour of the spring blossoms. IIRC, it actually refers to yellow and
not saffron.

(Just referred to Platts to validate my recall - with success!)

"basantii ra.ng denaa" is a phrase that goes back to Khusro -

mohe apane hii ra.ng me.n ra.ng de khwaajaa
mohe ra.ng basantii ra.ng de khwaajaa

The allusion here is to from the Basant festival when women wear
yellow.

Warm regards,
Abhay

NO. Chola means the cloth covering the body. there is another rhyming word in Hindi called 'Chela" which means a student/disciple.

It means something like, "Paint me with the colour of spring (season)".

I hope this helps.
