Anyway, my question was this. One of the raags which he played was
pancham-kee-daara, or something that sounded very close to that. He
even had a funny story about an American gentlemen calling it
"5-cent-cigara." :) While he was playing it, I could swear that I had heard
at least one Hindi movie song based on that raag. However, I could not recall
which one. So the question is, does anyone know of a Hindi film song based on
that raag? Maybe a Meera bhajan by Lata? (I know he has music-directed a song
in the movie Meera - "karna fakiri phir kyaa dilgiri" - but since I do not
recall hearing the song, it is probably not the one.)
I have already tried the RMIM Auotmailer, but to no avail.

Spoken like a true Beatles fan.

It is Pancham-se-Gaaraa and is Mr Shankar's variation on the parent
rAga. Since I don't much care for this variation I shall elaborate only
if there's interest.

I can see that the audience also had a great "sense of humour" to
laugh at Mr Shankar's chickenshit no-brainer PJs.

There are several Hindi film songs in Raga Gaaraa. Lata's 'mohe panghat pe
NandlAl chhed gayo re...' comes to mind right away.

Try under "Gaaraa/Gara" and a few more items should pop up. If not,
we have some work to do.

Another famous bhajan, Thumaki Chalat Ramchandra is based on Gara,
I think.
Ravishankar played [what he claimed was] a Thumri in Mishra Gara
here in Chicago. To this layman, he gives the distinct impression of
not being a god of any sort whatsoever.
Vijay
PS: Speaking of Gara, there is another (Thumaki Chalat being one) very nice
DV Paluskar bhajan (geet?) in Mishra Gara: kahaan ke pathik kahaan keenho
re gawanwa.
pancham se gaara.. hmmm...
well lets start with gaara...
gaara ... this is a raga that is like jhinjhoti...
khamaj that ...
aaroh - sa ga ma pa dha no sa
avaroh - sa ni(lower) da pa ma ga , ra ga ( lower) ra sa ni sa ,
ni ( lower ) da sa
If you notice the last part of the avaroh sounds like jayajayavanti.
it is distinct from khamaj by ra ga ( lower) ra sa ni sa ,
ni ( lower ) da sa ...
now to pancham...
pancham is another vakra raga - THAT marva and has two madhyamas...
pakad - sa ni ri ( lower ) sa , ma ma ( upper ) ma ga , ma (upper )
da sa , sa ,
ni pa da ma (upper ) ma ga pa ri (lower ) sa
sounds like a mixture of lalit/marva/sohni/bhatihar mixture...
Now if you ask me how these might be mixed ... well...
thats another story if at all they are mixed...and they are not ;-)
cheers

The Raga in question must have been "Pancham Se Gaara". I do not know of any
Hindi film song adapted in this particular Raga but there are many in Mishra
Gaara which is close. The one that comes to mind right away is the lilting
Lata number "Mohe Panghat Pe Nandlal Ched Gayo Re", which is from Mughal-e-Azam
The music was by Naushad.

I thought "Thumaka Chalat ..." was Yamani-Jhinjhoti ro something close to
that.
