Hi,

I have arrived on RMIM after a long time to make a request.
I would like to make a list of all the CDs released to date that
are dedicated to the poetry of only one sha'ir. I really like the
idea of CDs devoted to singular poets and would like to develop
a collection. I don't know if such a list has yet been developed on
RMIM. While I have a lot of ghazal CDs, I only have three or four
CDs which can be said to be devoted to one urdu poet.
These are the CDs that I have, to begin the list:

1) Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - "Shikwa 3" - devoted to Iqbal
2) Iqbal Bano - "Iqbal Bano Sings Faiz - volume 1" - devoted to Faiz Ahmed Faiz
I haven't been able to procure volume 2, which is disappointing
3) Jagjit Singh - "Gulzar presents ghazals of Mirza Ghalib"
4) Pankaj Udhas - "In search of Meer"
In Search of Meer is actually an excellent CD.
I usually don't think much of Udhas' work but this one is good.

Err, Irfan was asking for poets--poetasters not included, I presume.

Of course there are tons of albums dedicated to Mirza Ghalib. Here is
what I have:

- Pankaj Udhas - "Rubayee" This one is dedicated to Umar Khaiyyam
but ghazals from other poets are sung. Almost all the ghazals are
started off with a rubayee or two rubayees from Khaiyyam. In my
opinion, this is the finest album Pankaj Udhas ever made. His
selection of ghazals was very good. I met Pankaj Udhas recently in
Pune and I told him that and he said he agreed with me that Rubayee
was definitely his best album. I also asked him a question that was
incidently on my mind since I read a thread on the translation of
Khaiyyam's rubaayaat on ALUP, basically, i asked him if these were
translated straight from Persian or from Fitzgerald's English
translation and he said that these were translated from Persian. His
selection of rubaayaat was amazing. If u haven't heard it, try and
get your hands on it, u won't be disappointed.

- Abida Parveen - "Baba Bulle Shah" This one has all the sufi poetry
by Baba Bulle Shah and Hazrat Sultan Bahu

- "Shaguftagi" - Album released by Khaiyyam featuring different
singers and written by Kaifi Azmi only

- Bhupinder - "Aaj Bichhade hain" Poetry by Gulzar

- Jagjit Singh - "Forget me not" poetry by Kanwar Mohinder Singh Bedi
"Sahar"

- Hariharan - "Halka Nasha" poetry by Rajesh Johri

- Meena Kumari - "I Write I recite" poetry by Meena Kumari (excellent
in my opinion) , music by Khaiyyam

- Jagjit Singh - "Insight" poetry by Nida Fazli

- Mehdi Hasan - "Kehna Usey" Poetry by Farhat Shahzad, some ghazals
in this album are simply amazing and equally amazingly sung by the
Ghazal Master

- Ghulam Ali - "Khushboo" Poetry by Ahmed Anees

- Jagjit Singh & Chitra Singh - "Latest Ghazals and Nazms" - Poetry by
Sudarshan Fakir... another excellent poet IMHO.

- Ghulam Ali - "Madhosh" poetry by Sant Darshan Singh

- Mehdi Hasan and Tarannum Naaz - "Naqsh-e-Faryaadi" Poetry by Mirza
Ghalib

- Mehdi Hasan - "Sada-e-Ishq" - Poetry by Farhat Shahzad

- Jagjit Singh - "Samvedna" - Poetry by Atal Bihari Vajpayee (Not urdu
poetry)

- Jagjit Singh - "Silsilay" - Poetry by Javed Akhtar

- Ghulam Ali - "Sitam" - Poetry by Farhat Shahzad

- Jagjit Singh - "Soz" - Poetry by Javed Akhtar

- Pankaj Udhas - "Stolen Moments" - Poetry by Zafar Gorakhpuri

- Bhupinder Singh and Chitra - "Sunset Point" - Poetry by Gulzar

- Ghulam Ali - "Visaal" - Poetry by Gulzar

- Ishqa Ishqa - Poetry by Gulzar (forgot the name of the singer,
there was a post recently on RMIM with the lyrics of the title song
Ishqa Ishqaa)

I have a few more names, but I don't have the updated list on my
laptop and I'll update this list with more names tonight hopefully.

Yes, there is. It has a few nice (and a few excruciatingly
contrived) tunes created by her brother.

I am sure Irfan didn't mean to get this example, but here an example from
films
Saranga-Rani Roopmati CD. I'm reasonably certain that the lyricist here
won't
be deemed a poetaster.

A query...

Shouldn't the name be "naqsh fariyaadii" and not "naqsh-e-fariyaadii", if it
is from the famous Ghalib Ghazal?

Try EMI-RPG CDNF 152139 (Lata Mangeshkar sings Ghalib
and Other Ghazals). If you don't find it at your local
store, you could try getting it from Shrimati's (go to
shrimatis dot com).

First of all, thanks to all (particularly Amit Malhotra) for posting
CDs dedicated to a single sha'ir. I would like to emphasize a point
that Ashok has already made...that is, I was really looking for CDs
dedicated to some of the great shu'ra of the past....including but not
limited to Bahadur Shah Zafar, Dagh, Momin Khan Momin, Faiz Ahmed
Faiz, Iqbal, of course Ghalib and Meer Taqi Meer and some contemporary
poets like Khumar Barahbankavi, Shahryar (I already have Umrao Jaan!),
Ahmad Faraz etc. I do appreciate the list that has been generated
though! Thanks a lot. Keep elongating the list, if possible. I do
have to be selective in which CDs I buy; I can't buy everything!! I
am investigating the current list; some CDs, like Pankaj Udhas' CD on
Omar Khayyam are very tempting, among others...

As far as the question raised by Nimish - Yes, it is naqsh fariyadi,
NOT naqsh-e-fariyadi

Hi Irfan,

Just to point out, I figured you were looking for CD's from great
sho'ra, but I thought a complete list wouldn't hurt :) That gem by
Pankaj Udhas "rubayee" is definitely worth buying in my opinion, if
not for his singing, just for the rubayiaat that he has selected. I
think the albums featuring Farhat Shahzad were also very nice.
Especially the one by Mehdi Hasan, he remains my all time favourite in
Ghazals. Meena Kumari's album is also very nice. She writes
beautifully. The one by Jagjit Singh featuring Sudarshan Fakir is
lovely IMHO (once again). These are my recommendations from the list.

By the way, Nimish, yes, the ghazal is "naqsh fariyadi" but the album
is called "Naqsh-e-fariyaadi".. don't ask me why they named the album
this way :)

Amit Malhotra

Irfan sahab, I share your sentiments truly. I have scavenged several places in vain to search for CD's dedicated to the numerous other shayars and artists.

Finally I embarked upon a project to chronicle my own collection of ghazals, and categorized each track with its respective shayar. I managed to assemble a set of playlists dedicated to each shayar separately, with all artists who have rendered his poetry, eg; Ahmed Faraaz, Ameer Meenai, Arzoo Lucknawi, Bahadur Shah Zafar, Daagh Dehlvi, Faiyyaz Hashmi, Ibn-e-Insha, Josh Mahilabadi, Mohsin Naqvi, Nida Fazli, Yahya Jasdanwala, and many others.

Unfortunately, I might be limited by the number of tracks that I posses but I tried the classify them to the best of my abilities.

It was, but, a labour of love for me and it gives immense pleasure to be able to listen to ghazals written by the same poet, successively.

I would like to add that the exemplary passion and dedication of our fellow RMIMers has always been an inspiration for me.

regards

Gautam
