Musics in her genes

[Daughter of singer-actress Geeta Dutt and legendary filmmaker
Guru Dutt, Nina Memon is all set for a career in singing. Steven Ray
profiles the upcoming singer whose debut album Nina-Friends Are Forever,
is all set for release]

Parentage speaks. Some-times it even begins to sing, as in the case of
Nina Memon, the dau-ghter of the legendary filmmakerGuru Dutt and his
actress-singer wife Geeta Dutt. Having recently completed the final
recording of her first Hindi pop album titled Nina-Friends Are Forever,
the hitherto private" singer has finally broken the shell of an almost
incognito existence. For years together, even after she shifted to Pune
and her husband Naushad started a gift shop, not many were aware of
Nina's amazing lineage.

So what made her stay away from the arc lights, fame and the
capitalisation of her talent? Family," she replies. With her two
children growing up, she did not want to rock the boat of their
upbringing with long stretches of absence which a profession in the
film or music industry would have demanded. Now that her daughter
and son are 12 and eight years old respectively, Nina feels it
is time she gave vent to her other aspirations. All this has
basically come about due to my husband's encouragement," adds Nina.
For the record, Naushad has links with the film industry too,
he being the nephew of comedy actor-director Mehmood. Which
brings into the picture Lucky Ali too. A penchant for singing,
it must be said, swirls around on both the sides of Nina.

Talking about the soon-to-be-released album, Nina describes it
as a mix of various rhythms, ranging from folk to dance. So that if
one song creates a situation of mature women taking a retrospective
look at their lives, the other slips straight into a wild party on
the beach. Having taken formal training in light Indian classical
from my gurus like Malay Chakravarti and Rajendra Kandalgaonkar,
I had the confidence of stretching my voice to both the extremes
of pop. That apart, market forces dictate that there be variety
in any pop album, especially if it is a debut one," states Nina.

As for the extremely pertinent question of whether she sounds
like her mom, Nina says that she doesn't. Mine is a base voice,
some would even call it husky," she states, knowing fully well
that she stands the danger of being constantly compared to her
mother. Broach the subject of parental influence and Nina regrets
having spent only the first ten years of her life with her mother.
She died when I was too young to actually imbibe her style. But I
do remember that she would force me to take music lessons
which, as a naughty child, I would run away from," she recalls
with that emotional tinge of fondly preserved memories.

But now that she has finally stepped out of the woodwork, Nina
plans to make up for the lost years. Her second album will
probably be a tribute to her mother. "I am thinking of singing
her songs which will have a more contemporary musical track," she
reveals. As for playback singing in films, stage shows, videos
for her debut album...Nina is game for all the opportunities which
may happen to come her way. At the same time, fitting into the
existing mould of Indipop is not her scene. As Nina puts it, I would
like to experiment with a mix of Western pop music and Indian lyrics
to introduce fresh modulations." Finally, from within her
quotes, what comes across is a picture of an extremely sensitive,
yet level-headed person who feels too strong about singing to
music which does not inspire her. But in an industry where hard
choices can make or break a career, Nina agrees that a slight
shift in attitude is what she may require. But for that, everything
is just fine. And just the way Geeta Dutt would have liked to
listen to and Guru Dutt would have liked to picturise.

I think Gurudutt started Gauri with her in the lead role and never
completed the film. I am not aware of any others....
Was any music recorded and released for that film? Who was the MD? Any
notable songs?
