After Ashok Singh posted the films which have won the Filmfare awards, I
was trying to analyze, who were the people who were responsible for the
success of these films and the common factors in them.

Directors:
---------

Bimal Roy proves to be the boss in this category.

4 Bimal Roy [DBZ, Madhumati, Sujaata & Bandini]
3 Shyam Benegal [Bhumika, Junoon & Kalyug]
2 Shakti Samanta [Aaraadhana & Anuraag]
2 Hrishikesh Mukherjee [Aaand & Khoobsurat]

Note that this isn't a list of people who have won the
Filmfare award for Best Director, but just directors who have directed
films that have won Filmfare awards. Identical comment about the
other two categories. It would be interesting to see, of course, if these
people actually won Best Director awards. [I guess, I do want Ashok to
post the rest of the categories.]

MDs:
----

SDB is the clear cut God here.

5 S. D. Burman [Sujaata, Bandini, Guide, Aaradhana & Anuraag]
4 Salil Chowdhury [DBZ, Madhumati, Aanand & Rajnigandha]
4 Vanraj Bhatia [Bhumika, Junoon, Kalyug & Ardhsatya]
3 Shankar Jaikishan [Boot Polish, JDMGBH & Bramachaari]
3 Laxmikant Pyarelal [Dosti, Khilona & MTTAK]
3 R. D. Burman [Deewaar, Khoobsurat & Shakti]
2 Hemant Kumar [Jagriti & Saahib, Biwi aur Gulaam]
2 Naushad [Mother India & Mughal-e-azam]
2 Kalyanji Anandji [HKGM, Upkaar]

The only surprise here is the presence of Vanraj Bhatia who in my
memory has never been discussed on rmim before. But he really doesn't
belong here as those movies, obviously, don't have any claim to good
songs.

Another observation is that if u see the list from 1985 onwards, it has
Ravindra Jain, Anand-Milind, Ram-Laxman, Bappi Lahiri, Shiv-Hari,
Jatin-Lalit, Nadeem-Shravan as their MDs. Note no repeats. This shows the
lack of consistency in quality among the present day MDs.

Actors/Actresses:
----------------

4 Nutan [Sujaata, Bandini, Anuraag & MTTAK]
4 Naseeruddin Shah [Bhumika, Junoon, Ardhsatya & Sparsh]
3 Dilip Kumar [Madhumati, Mughal-e-azam & Shakti]
3 Amitabh Bachchan [Anand, Deewaar & Shakti]
3 Shashi Kapoor [Deewaar, Junoon, Kalyug]
3 Rekha [Aanand, Khoobsurat, Kalyug]
3 Smita Patil [Bhumika, Shakti & Ardhsatya]

Nutan is the surprise winner in this category. She is, ofcourse, a very
good actress. So, the real surprise is that Filmfare awards have
recognized talent. Actually, all the old movies are classics and so the
Filmfare awards list is indeed impressive. The reason I feel this way, is
because the impression I had was that Filmfare awards are given to
popular movies. This is certainly true if u see that RTGM, QSQT, MPK,
JJWS, HHRPK etc. won in the recent years. I shudder to think that these
will be considered as classics in another decade or so.

But, probably what seem as classics now, were probably popular movies in
their times. It is difficult to say whether they truely deserved the
awards or not unless we know what they were competing against.

Well, thats all.

Amit : Thanks for a superb analysis. I just have a chota crib ...

I am pretty sure Rekha did not act in Aanand. The heroine in this movie
is an obscure name: Sumita Sanyal. She is cast opp Amitabh. The main
hero Rajesh Khanna (in the title role) doesn't have a heroine.

Another interesting sidie - Anand is the continuation from the film
Safar atleast in the book version, I forget by whom. I guess they
made RKhanna die in both to make Safar a complete story in itself. Both
the characters have the same affliction - blood cancer. I watched Anand
a long time back, but I remember there is a passing comment about Anand
being in love long ago. This may be refering to the character played by
STagore in Safar.

"Jeevan se bhari" in Safar is one of those KK songs in which he excelled
himself.

Small nit to pick :
In Anand, RK had "lympho circoma of the intestine". Although I am not an
expert in medical jargon, that does not sound like Blood cancer.

I was under the impression that it was Simi G. The same doodette from
_Chalte Chalte_ and _Karz_.

Perhaps, the OP was referring to _Namak Haraam_ which starred Rekha
along with RKhanna and ABachchan. It was very much underrated (the movie).

Naushad did not win for Mughal-e-azam, that year S-J won for
Dil Apna Aur Preeth Parayi. Naushad was bitter about this and in an
interview I once read in Illustrated Weekly, he commented that he
deserved the award becos he had used Hindustani music to the extent
no one had previously used for Hindi Film music.

I was going to post this after Ashok posts the list of filmfare awards for music. (I hope Ashok posts it soon). Anyway, I think the filmfare awards were rigged. I think Naushad got just one filmfare award in his whole carrer, while Shanky-J got the max. The above example itself illustrates the credibility (or the lack of it) of the awards. Imagine rating "Dil apna..." above M-e-A. Even if the criterion was popularity and not quality, I think MeA deserved it more.
The score of "Dil apna..." was very ordinary even by Shanky-J's standards. I think they even got an award for Suraj. Yes, the same Suraj with the highly
melodious (!) "Titli udi..." song. It'll be interesting to compare the award winning movies with others of that era.

Sami Mohammed (A Naushad fan)...hoping to see the music awards list on RMIM.

Hey ! The musical score of Suraj IMO is pretty good.

1. Baharon phool barasavo is a classic .. most people would agree.
2. Kaise Samjaoon (Raag Bhairavi) is a great duet of Asha with Rafi.
3. Chehre pe giree zulphen kahado tho hata doon main ...by Rafi is full
of masti.

Inspite of all these good songs, it is odd that you bring up the example
of Titli Udi to judge the standard of music in Suraj.
