He was the son of film-maker Bhal-ji Pendharkar. V Shantaram was his uncle.
He assisted Shantaram and the Rajkamal Studio team in the production of
films like Do Aankhe Baarah Haath and Toofan aur Diyaa.
He had a gift for producing documentaries. He produced many documentaries
for Film Divison. Around 1991, he produced a Marathi documentary about
Lokmanya Tilak's Gayakwad Wada which was quite brilliant. He was also a
writer of merit. He had written a beautiful short novel named ????? ????,
centred on life in a military unit involved in building a road in the
Himalayas. Recently he had written a book in Marathi on the studio run by
his father Bhalji. Its title might be translated as 'A studio's
autobiography'. In private life, he was a soft-spoken, unassuming man,
dedicated to nurturing robust culture and saddened by the decline it has
been facing in recent years. A few years ago he had moved from Mumbai to
Pune, because of failing health. His death is a huge loss to the cultural
landscape he had graced for many years.
Are you referring to "Rarang Dhang"?
Atul.
Truely a great loss. The novel that you referred to - Rarang Dhaang
(रारंग ढांग) is one of the best novels I have read in last many years.
And his other novel, 'are sansaar sansaar' (अरे संसार संसार) was
equally great. Being a documentary/film maker, he had a gift of giving
a great 'visual' sense to his writing.
Marathi has lost one of her most illustrious sons. May he rest in
peace!
Indeed a great personality! Irrepairable loss, May his soul rest in
Peace!
