This newsgroup seems to be dominated completely by postings and
followups on Hindi film songs only. I am not complaining (I am a
big fan of Mukesh myself), but let us for a change discuss the
music of other Indian languages too!

On the same lines of the threads in this group:

(1) Let us rank the music directors of Telugu/Tamil whatever.
I will go first, on Telugu. My rankings are Salur Rajeswara
Rao, Pendyala and Chakravarthi in that order. Care to add
to this list? Let us do the same for singers. My order of
pref: Ghantasala, SPB, PB Srinivas, AM Raja(died in an
unfortunate accident recently) among male singers; leela,
Suseela and Janaki among female singers in that order.

(2) How about asking for lyrics of songs in other languages.
If any Telugu guy is reading this, can you provide me the
lyrics of the following song by LR Easwari?

"mukku choodu, mukkandham choodu, mukkununna aa pudakanu
choodu, O magadaa, ney munupati valeney lenaa? ..."

[Great song; an unfaithful wife has a hard time explaining
herself to her husband in this song.]

I need the lyrics to the following songs too from "Muthyala
Muggu" (both by Suseela I guess)

(a) "Nidurinchey thota loki, paata okati vacchindi,
kannullo neeru thudichi, kammani kala icchindi"

[A great tear jerker.]

(b) "Enthati rasikudavo teliseraa ..."

Let the discussion begin folks,

Siva Prasad. (grx...@uoft02.utoledo.edu)

I rate Illai Raja as the best non-Hindi music director, how can
you forget the numbers like Subbi Subbi - Swathi Muthayyam(Telagu)(suddenly
i got the doubt that whether it was Illai or not),
Surmayi ankhiyon mein nanha munna ek sapna de ja re - sadma (Hindi,
remake of Mundaram pirai), and a lot of other tamil numbers (which I
can't write because I don't know the lyrics, I know only the tunes.

I rate S.P.Balasubramanium as the best in this group. He and
Illai have given so many good songs that after listening to them I
started humming them without knowing the lyrics.

Female singer, I like Jaanki most. I remember that in India I
watched Sitara (telagu) and there was one maina or koyal great number. I
mave heard a lot of her other songs also and beleive me, she has the
real talent.
I would like to add Chitra also in the list. The second male
singer in my list will be Yesudas, great Malyalam numbers (I had the
luck of staying in Trivendrum for few months and there only I heard hid
devotional songs first time). They are simply great.

OOOPS! Thought that this would escape the notice of netters, but I
guess not. After posting the above, I realised the blunder I made
and cancelled this article; but followups to that appeared before
cancellation I guess!

I do know that Janaki sung "Nee leela.." ; I was trying to compare
the versatilities of both Janaki and Leela and to say they are not
so much different. Could not think of more songs of either singer;
which is why I cancelled the article. I apologize for my mistake!
(or misarticulation!).

I concur with this. Janaki has an extremely powerful and
expressive voice. I think her voice can shatter wine-glasses
like enrico caruso's voice supposedly did.

You Kidding!

You can't do that for Tamil movie songs.
They are all XXXXX rated.
At least you will have to avoid discussion of the double meaning!

What about Jesudas, and Chitra - They deserve to be in the top of
their respective classes. Also, how about S.P. Shailajah (spelling)?

I hope it's only on top of the female singers ;-> But seriously,
methinks Chitra edges her out by a slight margin.

Well some songs are rated NC17 but most are really G or PG.
The main culprit who puts out the X rated Tamil
songs is Ganghei (yes that's how he spell his name) Amaran.

You are wrong there. The song 'Nee leela Paadeda devaa' was sung by
S.Janaki(for Savitri). You can just feel the shrillness of the voice.Better
examples would be 'Andame Aanandam' from 'Bratuku-Teruvu' or the beautiful
'Tellavara vachche teliyaka naa sami' from 'Chiranjeevulu or 'Sadi seyako
gali'from 'RajaMakutam' or the song 'Rajamagal naan rojamalar' from the tamil
film 'Vanjakottai Valiban'(music by C.Ramachandra) reveal the beauty of her
voice though songs with a slightly classical flavour shine the best. Also her
telugu diction is perfect even though her mother tongue was Malayalam.

Jeez, S.Janaki is the one who sang " Nee leela paadeda devaa".
( " Singaara velai devaa " (sp?) for the tamil guys). It is the jewel
in the crown of S.Janaki' illustrious career. Legend has it that
Lata Mangeshkar who was the first choice to sing the song, opted out
since she couldn't keep up with the naadaswaram. S.Janaki was the
next choice and this song marked the arrival of S.Janaki.

I am very very sorry. I got confused between " Enthati rasikudavo"
and " Siva Siva ananela raa". I apologize for the blunder.

Are you serious????? This is like ranking Bappi Lahiri in the
top ten of the hindi music directors!!!! Can you tell one really good
song he composed?????

My top ten tamil/telugu music directors list would be

<With a bias towards telugu directors>
1. Ilaiyaraaja
2. M.S.Viswanathan

3. K.V.Mahadevan
4. S.Rajeswara Rao
5. Pendyala
6. Ramesh Naidu
7. Rajen-Nagendra
8. S.P.Balasubramanyam (YES!!)

Among the new crop, watch out for Keeravani ( Marakathamani
for tamil listeners)!!!! He is very talented.

From whom ?
Anand-Milind ??
These guys have lifted Ilaiyaraaja's
tunes so many times. < Dil, Vansh,
Love etc.>
Chakravarthi ?

Actually I am curious to know, if Ilaiyaraaja has lifted tunes from
somebody else. I know he lifted his own tunes, a couple of times. One notable
example is the song " Edhutaa neeve, edelona neeve" from Abhinandana. The
tune is exactly same as " Ilalo Kalise Sidhilaakasamee" from Anveshana.
Actually I guess it kind of proves the versatality od the tune. Abhinandana
number is a tragedy-tear_jurker kind of song, where as the other is sung
the terror-strikken heroine.

>>2. M.S.Viswanathan <<-- Here's is someone who should be #1

MSV has publicly acknowledged the fact that Ilaiyaraaja is
much more gifted than he ever was. Can somebody tell me the name of tamil movie
for which they composed together?? ( It is an AVM production , *ing
Radha and Mohan). You know, I have a tough time remembering long tamil
movie nameS. :-)

Obviously I can't fault you for not knowing
that SPB does compose music for movies. He has composed music
for only one tamil movie - Sigaram ( *ing Radha & himself). But he composed
for quite a few telugu movies( Mayuri, Thoorppu velle railu, Padamati
Sandhya raagam etc.)

You are not serious, are you??!! Chakravarthi and good music, is like
talking about Bappilahari and originality, (Hero) Krishna and good action,
present day heros of telugu movies and good diction/dialogue delivery !!
They just donot gotogether.

Telugu tinsel world has been lucky to have witnessed quite a few good
music directors. I would rate them in this order:

Pendyala
S.Rajeshwara Rao
K.V.Mahadevan
S.Dakshinamurthy
Ghantasala
Illayaraja
Ramesh Naidu
T.V.Raju
Master Venu
Keera vani

Keera vani is a new guy and appears to be very talented. Atleast listening
to "seetha raamayya gari manavaralu", I fealt so.

It is not too difficult to rate the male play-back singers.
Ghantasala
S.P.Balasubrahmanyam
Yesudas
A.M.Raja
P.B.Sreenivas
Ramakrishna

would be my order for them. Among the female singers, my order is:

Susheela
Bhanumathi
Leela
Janaki
L.R. Eeswary
Chitra
Jikki

let's continue the thread.

I would place S.Rajeshwara Rao on the top.For those who seem to be fascinated
by Illayaraja's 'westernised'tunes or his 'folk tunes' just hear Rajeshwara rao's tunes from 1940-1980 and you will know his versatality, talent, knowledge of
various systems of music. The spanish flavour in the music for'Mangamma Sapatham'in tamil(1944) or the great drum-dance of'Chandralekha' the superb music of thatclassic 'Malleswari'(both classical and folk) the great music for Vipranarayana
and Missamma and the list goes on.My ranking would be

S.Rajeshwara Rao
Pendyala
M.S.Viswanathan
Ghantasala
AdiNarayanaRao(few but gems)
K.V.Mahadevan
S.Dakshinamurthy
Illayaraja
T.V.Raju
Master Venu

There is a definite bias towards Telugu music directors in the above list
as I do not know much about the music directors in the other languages like
Malayalam(I know of M.B.Sreenivasan who rejected the award for the best music
score in 1972 for Swayamvaram) and Kannada( I do not rate Rajan-Nagendra very
highly.I also gave importance to the melody aspect of the musical score rather
than 'the gymanastics' with the instrumental accompaniments which I feel
Illayaraja is prone to do these days(except for some K.Viswanath's movies).
But all the above composers except T.V.Raju(I am not sure) were not restricted
to a single language. They composed for a lot of films in Telugu,Tamil and
even in Kannada and a few in Malayalam.I also like A.M.Raja's musical scores
for quite a few Tamil films. They are really sweet and enjoyable.

Coming to the singers the undisputed place(IMHO) goes to Ghantasala(taking
into versatality,and the voice).Though S.P.Balasubrahmanyam has a versatile
voice I do not find it melodious( Actually when he perfectly imitates the
comedians I find it odious). My rankings would be

Ghantasala
S.P.Balasubrahmanyam
T.M.Soundararajan(another versatile voice)
P.B.Sreenivas
A.M.Raja
Yesudas

Among the female singers
P.Leela
P.Susheela
Jikki
S.Janaki( it is too shrill)

There are also other singers who are very good but did not get as much chance
like Seerkazhi Govindarajan,P.Vasantha etc)
