I was just looking through the list of Amitabh movies on the newsgroup
and I came across the movie, Mahaan. I don't know how many of you have
seen the movie, because it was a flop in India. But let me assure you,
the movie was excellent. The director did a great job, and Amitabh's
acting was incredible. In fact, Amitabh had a triple role in this movie,
one father and two sons. This brings me to an interesting trivia
question:

How many movies can you think of any other movies that had triple roles?
I think Mahaan was probably Amitabh's only triple role. I wonder if
anybody else has done a triple role.

Just wondering,
Ashutosh

On a related note, you may be surprised to know that an actor had a
`pentuple' role :-) in a Telugu film (all those 5 characters had
enough role in the movie)!!

N T Rama Rao (ex-CM of AP), arguably one of the best actors in India
in his heyday (he tested the patience of Telugu filmgoers in his later
days though -- he _still_ does it! I wonder when he will retire....),
played _five_ roles in a mythological movie "Srimad Viraata Parvam".

He played the roles of Krishna, Arjuna, Suyodhana, Karna and Keechaka.
He did a decent job as usual, but they twisted the story too much to
project all the roles NTR was doing in a good light (they made Bheema
look like a villain in comparison to Keechaka!) and it became too
boring and disgusting. The movie was an utter flop. I think it was the
last mythological movie of NTR, the king of mythologicals. NTR was way
past his prime when he did this movie BTW.

In his good days, NTR had done innumerable double roles and a few
triple roles too. An n-ple role by NTR meant that the movie had n
reasons to be a hit!! He played the roles of Rama, Krishna, Arjuna,
Bheema, Ravana, Suyodhana, Karna, Bheeshma, Abhimanyu and Keechaka
among _many_ others. Shantaram pursued him to play the role of
Dushyanta in his Hindi "Shakuntala", but NTR decided to stick to
Telugu films [I think he did one Hindi film in his early days though
("Ram aur Shyam" or something like that)] -- Hindi filmgoers missed a
great chance.... -- I don't think Hindi film industry had any good
actor for mythologicals.

There are movies in which he played 2-3 roles, but those playing other
roles made you wish NTR played those roles too! For example, in "Daana
Veera Shoora Karna" (which was shown on TV on a Sunday afternoon as a
regional language movie - that day happened to be NTR's birthday BTW),
NTR played the roles of Karna, Suyodhana and Arjuna. The guy playing
Krishna [NTR's patent role! -- it's said that Nitish Bharadwaj (?) who
played Krishna in Chopra's TV `Mahabharat' watched NTR's movies before
doing the role. You can actually see some mannerisms (like the elegant
way of moving of hands while stylishly delivering dialogues) which
seem to have been borrowed from NTR] looked horrible esp in the scenes
in which he was in NTR's presence. The movie was a megahit though.

Before netters think that NTR was limited to mythologicals, let me
clear that that is not the case. He was a true allrounder. And a
classy one at that! But, when it comes to mythologicals and the
janapada movies (movies of kings, princes, princesses, forts,
taantriks, treasures etc), NTR was the one and only one in Telugu film
industry (or even in the whole Indian film industry). More than 99% of
such movies made in Telugu starred NTR.

Probably NTR is #1 among Indian actors in terms of percentage of his
movies in which he did a double role or a triple role. He had sooooooo
many mutliple roles!

BTW, didn't Kamalhasan do 4 roles in that Tamil movie "Michael Madana
Kamaraj" or something like that?

hi there,
sanjeev kumar has done seven (or is it nine) roles in a movie called
"Naya din nayi raat".

jagdeep has done a triple role oin the utterly disgusting "soorma bhopali"

i think rajnikant did a triple in "john jaani janaardan"
Mehmood did a triple in "hamjoli", a take off on prithviraj, raj and randhir of the kapoor
clan.

Any more?

I too don't remember the name of the movie, but I think it has
"nau raat" or somethnig like that in its name.

If I remember right, it is a series of 9 disjoint stories.
Sanjeev Kumar plays 9 totally different roles, but they don't
come together in the movie. It is like 9 movies compressed
together technically.

In other multiple role movies, all the roles come together and
I think that's the fun in a multiple role ......

The movie you are referring to is Nau Din Nau Raat' or Nayi Din Nayi Raat.
(don't remember the title exactly as I had seen it about 14years back on the
local Doordarshan program). This was actually a remake of a very successful
Tamil movie 'Navaratri' starring Sivaji Ganesan and Savitri and it had an
excellent performance by Sivaji. It was also remade in telugu as Navaratri
with ANR(A.Nageswara Rao) and Savitri. The Hindi version came much later.
But in this movie each role apppears sequentially and not simulataneously

As PVR has pointed out in an earlier article NTR has donned many double/
triple/quadruple/pentuple(??) roles in mythologicals.I think the first movie
where an actor 'had' to do a double role was a tamil movie in 1949 'Apoorva
Sahodaragal'(dubbed into Telugu as 'Apoorva Sahodarulu' - not to be confused
with the Kamal Hassan's movie of the 80s) which is the first of the 'missing
twins' films.

Actually NTR himself played the role of Krishna in this movie and it was
his son Harikrishna who played the role of Arjuna. Infact NTR looked terrible
as Krishna as he had become too fat and the makeup was horrible. The music
was somewhat relieving. Some of the songs are OK.

Hi PVR,

The movie you are referring to is 'Naya Din Nai Raat'. True that
sanjeev kumar plays 9 roles in the movie. But all these roles are not
altogether disjointed. The heroine of the movie Jaya Bhaduri meets all these
characters while she is on a walk outside ( more than that . Me thinks that
she ran away from home to meet her lover anyway ) her home. In fact in the end
of the movie we see seven of the sanjeev kumars together in a marriage ceremony.
In which the groom also is sanjeev kumar.

Hope this help.

Well Mahaan was a remake of 2 SI Movies :
1. Sankar Guru (Kannanda) Raaj Kumar Played the lead
2. Some Tamil Film Shivaji Ganesan Played the lead.

Acting in 3 or more roles is no big deal in the South.

NTR Has acted in 5 roles in SOme MYth movie.
So has Shivaji Ganesan

Kamalahasan Played 3 roles in APPU RAJA (Remember he also
played the father).
He has also played 4 roles in MICHAEL MADHANA KAMA RAJAN
a Tamil movie.

If I remember right Mehmood Played 3 roles in Humjoli,
which again was a remake of a Tamil Film in which
Nagesh a Tamil Comedian played 3 roles.

So its no BIG DEAL.

and BTW Naya Din Naya Raat was also a remake of a Tamil-Telugu
movie called Navratri.

So then except for Jagdeep's Soorma Bhopali, is there a *ORIGINAL*
Hindi movie in which someone has played 3 roles ???

Though Kamalahasan did a triple role (twins (one a midget) and
father) in "Apoorva Sahodargal", the father role comes for a very
short while in the beginning of the movie and he dies before the
kids are born (Kamal played the role very well though). So, it is
effectively a double role. It's a decent movie. Kamal's action
and Singitam Srinivasa Rao's direction made it a nice movie,
despite all that commercial massala. (Singitam was the director
of "Pushpak" too. He worked as an assistant director under the
south Indian director KVReddy, who made the blockbuster of yester
years "Mayabazar", which runs to houseful crowds (when released
-- they release it every year for a week or two) even today.)

I remember that Kamalhasan did a quadruple role in a 1991 movie
"Michael Madan Kamraju" or something like that. But this title has
only 3 names -- I wonder if I remember the name wrong or the # of
roles wrong.
