Often in Hindi films, one finds the hero/heroine singing, while playing a
piano. These "PIANO" songs were part of a clever ploy of the film director to
introduce a song even when the situation did'nt warrant one. The most
interesting part of these songs was that while the songs usually opened with
tunes from the the piano, other instruments took over after the opening
stanza. However, the hero/heroine used to religiously play the piano until the
end of the song, while there was a violin or Sitar, etc. playing in the
background. Here are a few examples:

1. Aaj ki raat mere dil ki salami lele..... (Dilip Kumar, Ram aur Sham,
Naushad)

2. Ai husn zara jaag tujhe ishq jagae.......(Rajendra Kumar, Mere Mehboob,
Naushad)

3. Khwab ho tum ya koi haqeeqat.......(Dev Anand, Teen Devian, S.D. Burman)

4. Kaun aaya ke nigahon me khanak....(Sadhna, Waqt, Ravi)

5. Koi sonay ke dil wala.....(Dev Anand, Maya, Salil Chaudary)

6. Kahin door jab.......(Rajesh Khanna, Anand, S. Chaudary)

7. Dil ke jharoke me tujh ko bithakar....(Shammi Kapoor, Brahmachari, SJ)

8. Tu kahe agar......(Andaaz, Dilip Kumar, Naushad)

9. Pyar diwana hota hai......(Rajesh Khanna, Kati Patang, RD Burman)

10. Dil to hai dil ........(Rakhee, MK Sikander, Kalyanji Anandji)

Any additions to this list ?

Dost dost na raha, pyar pyar na raha (Mukesh, Raj Kapoor, Sangam, ...)

and then, there's that song in "Ek Phool Do Mali" picturized on Balraj - I just
don't seem to be able to recollect the words.... (or am I mistaken ?)

Dheere Dheere Machal
Ae dil-e-bekaraar

Lata - HEmant Kumar -Khamoshi

Ye hava ye chandani Suhani
Kishore -Majrrooh -Kishore - Jhumroo (Well a bit of piano music by Madhubala to start
the song. )

Well backi in india, VividhBharati usedto have "Chayageet" at 10 pm everyday. It was
phenomenal program in which the host used to play songs based on a certain theme.
One day was songs with piano in the background. They started with "Dil ke jharoke..."
from Bramhchari (the longest piano sequence in a Hindi song ever..??)and there were
many more.
Continuing on Chayageet, it was one of the best programs Vividh Bhaarti had.
Many songs were repeated. The theme of Sawaan jus before the start of the rainy season
had one of the very best collection of songs. Itused always start with "Diwana hua Badal"
from Kashmir ki Kali. One of the most regular songs was "Ye raat bhigi bhigi " from Chori
Chori (SJ +Shailendra+ Manna Dey, Lata).
Any mopre additions and recollectionsof this program ...

There was one with Dharmendar singing and both Mala Sinha and
Tanooja believing that he is wooing her. A very nice song, of
which I do not unfortunately remember the lyrics. I think
it was a B&W film, started by Gurudatt who died before he
could complete it. Something with "Dil" in the title.....

Tanooja looked absolutely fabulous in it :-)

Cheers,

1. Hame aur jeene ki chahat na hoti agar tum na hote-2 (by kishore)

2. Ai jane zigar, dil me samane ajaaa, bigari hui hasti(??) ko jamane ajaaa,
( oldies by Mukesh)

3. ye kaun aya raushan ho gayi mahefil jiske nam se, jaise mere ghar suraj
nikala ho sham se, - 2

there are many many songs, but couldn't collect them. Music lovers send some
more, they are really gems. Back to you soon.
