K.Balachandar's movie "Sindhi Bhairavi" needs no introduction to
Tamil movie fans or Karnatic music lovers.
As many Karnatic fans know, the song "Mahaa ganapathim" performed by
K.J.Yesudoss is in the raga "Naattai".I believe that M.Dikshithar wrote this
krithi. The song "mari mari ninnae' again performed by K.J.Yesudoss is
composed by Thyagaraja,I believe, though I don't know its raga. Those who
have seen this movie would know how Suhasini( in fact, Chitra ) converts the
folk song "Paadariyaen .." to tie with "mari mari ninnae". Many musicians
and K.Balachandar hailed Ilayaraja for having come with up with a brilliant
original composition. But the karnatic vidhwan Late M.D.Ramanadhan objected
to this composition saying that Ilayaraja missed the raga at some instant of
this song. In the first place, I don't know the raga of this song "mari mari
ninnae' and in the second place, I don't know where Raja missed the raga of
"mari mari ninnae" when he merged his "paadariyaen" to "mari mari ninnae".
Had K.J.Yesudoss (a student of Chembai Vaidyanadha Bhagavadhar ) performed
this song, he might have recognized this fault at the end of "paadariyaen".
But the word is that only when Late M.D.Ramanadhan pointed out Ilayaraja's
fault in his composition "Paadariyaen", many Karnatic vidhwans in Madras

came forward supporting Late M.D.Ramanadhan's criticism.
Anyway, I praise Ilayaraja for having made the Karnatic music easily
accessible thru his song "Paadariyaen".
But this posting is not really about "Paadariyaen". I am interested in
knowing the raga of the song "Poomaalai vaanki .." performed by K.J.Yesudoss
in the same movie . It sounds like the raga "Vishwapriya" to me ..
Who wrote the lyrics for this song? "kaviyarasu" Vairamuthu?
What about the raga of the song "Kalaivaaniyae?"
Thanks,
S.Pandian,

Here is what I know about the ragas for the songs in the film
Sindhu Bhairavi.

* Maha ganapathim: As you correctly observed, this is a
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Muthuswamy Dikshithar composition in the raga Nattai and is used
without any modification in the film.
* Mari mari ninne moralida: In the film, both Yesudoss and Chitra
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
sing this song in the raga Saramathi (a janya of Nata Bhairavi,
the scale of this raga is: s r2 g2 m1 p d1 n2 S; S n2 d1 m1 g2
s). However, the original compostion "Mari Mari ninne" is by
Tyagaraja in the raga Kambhoji. The complaint M.D.Ramanathan and
many other musicians had with Ilayaraja was not that there was an
error in the raga Saramathi (after all the singers have to be
faulted for such a mistake) but that Ilayaraja had not followed
the Tyagaraja padhati (tradition) of ragas. The purists contend
that Tyagaraja was not only a composer but also a vaggeyakara --
this means that he specified the raga and tala for every kriti he
wrote and these have to followed strictly. On the other hand,
Ilayaraja's claim is that, the Tyagaraja padhati is only heresay
and as long as he can improvise, he should not be faulted for
changing the raga of the original composition.

* Poomaalai vaangivandhan: This composition is in the raga
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Kaanada", certainly *not* Vishwapriya. Vishwapriya is a janya
of Gamanasrama (and is quite similar to Hamsanandi and Sunadha
Vinodini). I do not know who the lyricist is.
* Kalaivaaniye: This kriti is based on the scale of Kalyani.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
However, the "judge" who introduces the concert says that the
composition has no avaroha prayogas. Still the aroha prayogas
used are based on Kalyani.

There are some more songs from the film based on classical ragas.

* Un dayavillaiya: This song is meant to be a translation of the
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Telugu kriti, "Nee dayaraadha" in the raga Vasantha Bhairavi.
The composer is Tyagaraja.
* Yochana Kamala lochana: This kriti in the raga Darbar,
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tyagaraja compostion, is sung in a concert hall. "JKB" corrects a
faulting musician for his poor bhava and demonstrates a solfa
passage in the "proper style".
