I think the film's name was "Bhakt Surdas"

"Anari" was a 1959 release, not '57.

I don't quite know the exact scheme of things
here --- probably you are listing songs where
the first few words are the same. If so, let me
add one such "couple" :

1. "Milte hee nazar" (un se, dil aane ko kya kahiye)
Talat, "Naghma".

2. "Milte hee nazar" (aap mire dil men aa gaye)
Kishore Kumar, "New Delhi".

There must be innumerable such songs. What exactly
is the objective of listing them ? Melodically, there
may be just no connection whatsoever.

How about this pair?

"04 - Sadhna - Sawan aaye ya na aaye - 1939 - Hareesh - Anupam Ghatak -
Kanhaiyalal.mp3"

and

Naushad's 'saawan aaye yaa naa aaye' in Dil Diya Dard Liya
by Asha + Rafi - Shakeel - 1966.

Same opening words and some melodic passages which are
obviously borrowed by Naushad from Anupam Ghatak's tune.

Continuing with 'melodic shades' urf 'chup chaap kii chori',
I heard a tune today on which 'u.De jab jab zulfe.n terii'
is based. This may have been discussed before on rmim but
to me it was a discovery. Vinod had used the same tune before
O P Nayyar in the Punjabi film Bhaiyaji in 1950. The song was
'menoo meria dukhan ne teriya (or beriya)'. It was sung by Rafi.
I don't know whether the tune is Vinod's original conception or
he borrowed it from Punjabi folk. But it certainly isn't an original
tune by O P Nayyar.

The aim is to bring out significant differences between 2 or more
melodies to the listener's attention, either in the rendition,or
lyrically, or musically or any other distinct feature of the song.
This has got to be STRESSED when contrasts are made, thus making
LISTENING more pleasurable not only to the LAY minds but also to
die-hard connoisseurs, who expect more and more from little and little.

It is true, that most of 'inputs' provided in earlier two postings may
be 'bumbers' to young and aspiring music lovers of Indian
cinema;nevertheless, love and passion for the 'unknown' in music CAN BE
(repeat,CAN BE)created or developed only if one has the attitude to
seek them earnestly.Otherwise, its just ALSO RAN ('thheek hai!).

You have got to bring out the CONTRAST between 2 or more songs: thus
one "melodic shade" and bring out another; a 'shadow'of the earlier
one more or less.

Putting them on paper is an attempt made easier for the benefit of the
'bhaktas'. Unless, the latter resolves to probe and find out the
credibility of what I state or have stated, the entire thing remains a
'mystery and suspense' to the eager listener.

Excerpts from an article "Behind the smoke screen of melody) from Play
Back and Fast Forward old issue...

"A film journal once reported that a popular music duo got sudden
inspiration for a hit 'bhajan' tune in the small hours of the day and
they sang it to the showman-producer on the telephone. He was thrilled
and so was the public when it was heard. But the gullible listeners
did not know that the melody was lifted note by note from a 1948
'Gopinath 'bhajain 'Aai gori Radhika Brij men bal khati' (music by
Ninu Majhumdar) - the story of a 'sudden inspiration'was only a myth
to create an image.

Naushad once alleged that his tune ('Mera salam leja'- 'Uran Khatola')
was stolen from his music room by fellow composers (he meant Husna
lal- Bhagatram). Piqued by the accusation, they retorted that they had
stolen their tune ('Sham-e-bahar aai'- 'Shama Parwana') from where,
they claimed Naushad himself had stolen the tune.

Refering to the love-call Dharti ko akash pukare' in 'Mela', I asked
Naushad recently if he was inspired by Ghulam Hyder's 1936 melody
'Raavi ke us paar. He diplomatically replied that many composers were
inspired by Ghulam Hyder and he also could be one of them. He cited
the example of R C Boral who created 'Ek bangala bane nyara 'from
Ghulam Hyder's Asrab ko jane wale 'composed in 1936. It was more of a
defence, meaning "if Boral could do it, why not l?"
Call it inspiration or plagiarism: some are candid about it while some
hide it behind the mask of hypocrisy.
Music director S N Tripathi admits that 'Sare jahan se achha'was
his inspiration to create Rafi's 'Parvar cligare alam '('Hatimtai') C
Ramchandra similarly gave credit to the natya geet 'Moortimant bhiti
ubhi for his Zindagi usiki ha' (Anarkali'). But there are countless
other songs where the music directors have not learned to give angels
their dues.

Sardar Malik claims to have composed 'Bachna zara zamana hai bura'
(Iyrics by Sahir) for 'Hoor-e-Arab'in 1955. Soon after, he was
replaced by Ghulam Mohammed, who, according to him, retained the tune
but changed the words to Tara rara rum, mere dil men sanam' (by
Shakeel) and 'Bachna zara found its way in 'Milap to the credit of N
Dutta.

Music director Vinod, inspired by Malika Pukhraj's ghazal 'Are mai
gusaro, savere'created an intensely moving composition Dard mila hai
tere pyar ki nishani' ('Anmol Ratan'-1950) which later on became
Mohabbat men meri tarah jo mita ho'(Music by Hemant Kumar - 'Shart' -
1954) Tere pyar' ka asara chahata hoon' in Dhool ka phool '(N Dutta -
1954). Traditional and borrowed tunes are passed off as flashes of
genius or sudden inspiration. It's a murky world - the world of Indian
cinema where laurels have lost their sanctity because they are often
offered by the gullible and ignoramus to those men of music who
who more often than not do not deserve them. "

"aaj jaane kii zidd na karo" is a _nazm_ by Faiyaz Hashmi.
The most popular renditions are by Farida Khanum and Habib
Wali Mohammed. Both easily available. Check your music

I feel this article should have been posted
in a separate, new thread --- otherwise it can
get buried in the "avalanche" of "similar" songs
being posted in this thread.

Referring to the "Mela" song ("Dharti ko aakaash
pukaare"), I had an opportunity to listen to the
Ghulam Haider number "Raavi ke us paar", and my
immediate reaction was : This is in ShivRanjini.
I think this seeming similarity is due to the
common notes of the basic raag employed. And no
"lifting" or "plagiarism" need be imputed.

The other Ghulam Haider song (1936) should actually
be "Yasrab ko jaane waale...". SNT's "Haatim Tai"
number is : "Parwardigaar-e-'Aalam".

There are occasions when very apparent similarities
do not occur to us till they are pointed out. This
is the case with "Bachna zara..." and "Tara rara rum".
Is "Milaap" a 1955 film or 1956 ? In the latter case,
a "lift" can definitely be suggested.

Thanks for the article.

"Ek chameli ke mandwe tale" is one of the favs of many MD's today for
inspiration

Jatin Lalit used this first in Yes Boss... "Ek din aap youn hamse mil
jaayenge"
then Raju singh used the same for "Saare sapne kahin kho gaye" for
Alka-Javed Album and then Sajid-Wajid again used the same recently in
Chori Chori in the song "Aate aate reh gaye paas hum"
