My ranking for Hindi film music directors is as follows:

1 S D Burman
2 C Ramchandra
Anil Biswas
3 Ghulam Mohammed
O P Nayyar
Shankar Jaikishan
R D Burman
4 Naushad
Hemant Kumar
Jayadev
Khayyam
Saleel Choudhary

If you allow (basically) one-timers, Ravi Shankar gave unutterably
beautiful music to Anuradha. Hindi films should be grateful for that
amazing piece of work.

Among the lyricists the greatest is undoubtedly Sahir Ludhianvi.

1 Sahir Ludhianvi
2 Gulzar
3 Shakeel Badayuni
Shailendra
Majrooh
Rajinder Krishan

(If you allow one-timers, then Ghalib gave unutterably beautiful
lyrics to Mirza Ghalib :-). Hindi films should be grateful for that
amazing piece of work. :-) )

Now no one's asked for singers but I am giving them anyway, ( who
is going to stop me :-) )
Among the male singers, no one compares with Kishore Kumar, so
I think the best way to say this is having no #2. My ranking is :

1 Kishore Kumar
2
3 Mukesh
4 Talat
Manna Dey
Hemant Kumar
5
6 Rafi

Those were the male voices. Among female singers, there isn't much
competition due to cut-throat tactics of a few :-) Still

1 Lata Mangeshkar
2 Asha Bhosle
3 Geeta Dutt
Suman Kalyanpur

Note that there is no gap between 1 and 2. Mention must also be made
of Mubarik Begum, with the beautiful voice, who for some reason didn't
sing too much. She is better than Shamshad.

Let me say that I mightn't have heard enough. Also I am sorry if I left
out someone big, but I think MOST of the rest are hacks.

( Finally, these are not necessarily the opinions of the U of Chicago
Dept of Math :-) )

I would like to add a few names on the list of great music directors.

1) Roshan - with movies like Taj Mahal and Barsaat Ki Raat.

2) Ghulam Mohammad - does someone knows about his movies.

3) Hemant Kumar - He was a pretty awesome music director too.

regards,

SYED.

Hello!

I'm sorry to diturb you guys again. I asked for a list of Amitabh movies
a couple of days back, and some kind soul did send it to me, but
I accidently deleted it.

Would that person be kind enough to mail it again to me.
Please mail it to the following address, not the one from which this
message is being sent.

my address is

thanks a lot,

regards,

SYED.

Among his best movies are Mirza Ghalib and Pakeezah(the music of this
movie was completed by Naushad because of the untimely death of Ghulam
Mohammed midway through the film which was dragged on for many years just
like Mughal-e-Azaam.

I consider Naushad as the numero uno among the Hindi music composers.

He is probably most well known for giving music to PAKEEZA, and he
was Naushad's assistant. Apparantly, Ghulam Mohmd. was not able to
witness the incredible success of Pakeeza. He died just before the
movie was released.

Ghulam Mohammad composed the score for "Pakeezah" - the most famous of the songs,
at least. Unfortunately, that was his last movie as music director - he died before
the movie could be completed and Naushad completed the task begun by GM. Pakeezah
alone could put Ghulam Mohammad among the topmost music directors in my opinion.
One other movie (actually a song) that comes to my mind is "Dil-e-nadaan" -
the song being "Zindagi denewale sun" by Talat Mahmood, a beautiful song indeed.
I can't think of other Ghulam Mohammad movies right now....

Along similar lines, can anybody tell me some movies/songs for which Sajjad Hussain
composed music? I know one song - "Wo pass rahen yaa door rahen ..." sung by
Suraiya, the movie was "Pyaar ki jeet", I think. Sajjad has been acknowledged by
Lata as one of her favourite - for what movies has Lata worked with him?

Ghulam Ali's ghazals - my "favourites" (because I have only one cassette and I like all the
ghazals....)

1. Itni muddat baad mile ho
2. Aawargi
3. Chupke chupke raat din
4. Mastana piye jaa yoonhi
5. Kal chaudvin ki raat thi
6. Hangama hai kyoon
7. Bahaaron ko chaman
