Just heard Roy Orbison's "pretty woman" on the bus. Well this lift by
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy seemed pretty obvious. They just upped the tempo,
same tune, same repeat words "pretty woman". I searched Karthik's I2FS
site and RMIM but could not find a reference to this lift. Hence
posting. Apologies if someone has already brought this up on this
forum.

it is already well known.

BTW SEL paid royalty to the original composer of PW. Wondering whether
choRDBurman ever did that :-)

to the xtent that it does not need a mention in I2FS or RMIM?? I know
it is very obvious just because it retains the repeat words, but
still... it is a copy.

> BTW SEL paid royalty to the original composer of PW.

I would like to know more on this. Any links, pointers? I wonder why
this song was so much needed in the film that they had to copy and pay
royalty. Any other hallaa-gullaa song would have filled the scene.

It's a copy, but it's not a "secretive" copy. AFAIK, Roy Orbison
is credited on the (official) Kal Ho Na Ho CD sleeve for this song
as "original by Roy Orbison". I don't remember if Orbison's name
also appears in the credits of the movie or not (I was terribly
bored by the time the credits rolled by), but I'd be surprised if
it did not (jab CD par de diyaa naam, to movie me.n chhupaane se
kyaa kaam?)

In any case, as RK said, "it is well known."

See above. Check the CD.

You do have a point, but when is *any* copied song ever _needed_
in a film (except in one like Dil Vil Pyar Vyar or Jhankar Beats)?

I don't think MDs in HFM copy songs because the songs are "needed".
They know that the film's music is among the factors important to the
film's success. A popular song has a proven track record and a copy
of it makes a quick "successful" song. I guess SEL (or the film
producer) would have felt more confident of the success of the KHNH PW
song, than they would have of an original hulla-gulla composition. As
for paying royalty, well, if they were filming the movie in New York
with that song, they had to acknowledge the original song lest they
get sued. Apparently, $6K was paid for the rights to make the Hindi
version.
As an aside, I'd like to share a remark by shahrukh that I liked. He
was interviewed on the sets of KHNH by CBS in which he said, "Tom
Cruise and Johnny Depp cannot touch this (do bollywood movies)." :-)

Hema.
- trying to imagine how Johnny Depp would look dancing to PW. :-)

Thank god. Atleast this way more ppl. will know about one of my
all time favorites.

Incidentally Pretty Woman was Roy Orbison's greatest hit.

I was away from the web for a while in the vaadiyaa.N of Blue
Mountains. Thanks Hema, UVR and Ganti for your replies. Now it makes
some sense to this illiterate in the-latest-of-HFM. Perhaps they were
eying NRI viewers. However, I wouldn't sell my composition for $6K
(kidding).:)

Right, and who would be willing to buy your composition for $6K?

-UVR.
Also kidding.

I thought it was a play on the heroine's real name - "Preity" Zinta.

A request to Sami Saheb ,
Can you post some details
about Naushad's less known assistants . While watching his movies some
names as Mohd Ibrahim and Mohd Shafi are seen , you are a great fan
of Naushad so it's my request .

Although it cannot be called a "copy", the medley of HFM songs in
Chashme Buddoor is really funny. Also, the song "Hum tum ek kamre mein
bandh ho" & "dost dost na raha" are used in the same film for
terrific comic effect. IMHO, all of them were needed!

Cheers

I think it's only the chorus and a few phrases from one or two of the verses
that have been lifted. I was a big Orbison fan, and didn't hear an exact
lift.

... who died over 10 years ago?
