It is possible that, in addition to the trend becmong rarer, whatever little efforts
are made in that direction do not receive any attention, due to lack of radio and
TV play. I will mention whatever I have managed to gather sporadically. In the
Indian music stores in the United States, hit-film cassettes are ubiquitous; but it
is almost impossible to come to know of "obscure" films and songs.
Unfotunately, to my chagrin, I couldn't do much better in my visits to India either
(although I must admit that Bangalore is not the best of places to look for them).
There is a HMV cassette of mid-1980s called "Classics from Films:
Classical Artists Sing for Films." It has the following ten songs:
1. Baiju bawra: "Aaj gaawat man mero"
Naushad: Paluskar and Amir Khan.
2. Shabab: "Daya karo giridhar gopal"; Naushad; Amir Khan
3. Mughal-e-azam: "Prem jogan ban ke"; Naushad; Bade Ghulam
4. Geet gaya pattharon ne: Title song; Ramlal; Kishori Amonkar
5. Sant Tulsidas: "Ram prabhu adhar";
Ram Kadam; Bhimsen Joshi
6. Bawarchi: "Kahe kanha karat barjori";
Madan Mohan; Lakshmi Shankar
7. Bhumika: "Mandar baju re"; Vanraj Bhatia; Saraswati Rane
8. Gaman: "Aaya sanwariya tohe garwa laga loon"
Jaidev; Hira Devi Mishra
9. Main tulsi tere angan ki: "Saiyan rooth gaye";
Laxmikant-Pyarelal; Shobha Gurtu
10. The Kudrat song by Parveen Sultana mentioned by Abhay
and others.
Among the important ones omitted here are: Amir Khan singing the
title song of 'Jhanak jhanak payal baje' (I don't know any other
Vasant Desai composition using classical singers), the other
song from 'Mughale-azam' ("Shubhadin aayo"), and the songs from
'Umrao Jaan.'
(continued)
In Vijeta(sp?), there is a sequence in which Rekha is 'riyaazing' in
the morning. Does anybody know whose lent the voice to that short
'cheez'(if I may say so). Me feels it was Kishori Amonkar.

Chetan.
PS - There is a male voice accompanying Asha. He is presumably
Rekha's guru in the movie. I think Vasantrao Deshpande lent
his voice to the "guru". I am not *absolutely* sure.
As far as I know, 'Umrao Jaan' has only the raagmala
sung by Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan.
In addition to the songs mentioned in this post and the
next one, I can think of a couple of others -
- 'ghat ghat mein ram ramaiyya...' sung by Pt. Firoz Dastur
in 'Bhumika', MD Vanraj Bhatia.
- a couple of songs ('shub ghaDi aayi...' and a tarana)
sung by Parveen Sultana in 'Razia Sultan', MD Khayyam.
- Songs of 'Pakeezah' set to music by Naushad include songs
by Parveen Sultana ('kaun gali gayo shaam...') and
Shobha Gurtu (which song(s) ?).

==> Yes. With Shahida Khan and Runa Prasad. Shahida Khan sings another
song in the film ("Jhoola kinne dala"). I don't know whether she
(and Runa Prasad) are classical singers.

==> The song is 'Bandhan baandho." I am unclear about a bunch of
songs that got released in 1977 as Pakeeza RangBirang, six years after
the movie came out. I dnon't know whether extra footage was added to
the film or just the songs were released. This is one of them. So is
"Chalo dildaar chalo" as a Lata solo. Although all Rafi does is
repeat the same line in the duet version with Lata singing most of
the lines, it sounds far better than the solo version.
Thanks for letting me know about all these songs.
Ashok
Could you list all the songs that we've identified so far?
thanks,
Kishore
