His voice and rendering were really appealing. His 2 solos
1.Dukh se bhara hua hai dil
2.Hum kya bataye tumse
composed by Khemchand Prakash for JAAN PEHCHAAN gave a feeling
of a prosperous new comer as a play back artist.
The songs were soon forgotten and I think he later rendered
a duet with Suraiya
'Chaahe kitni kathin dagar ho' (dont remember the movie)which
was very popular.
Can someone in the NG mention any other songs by him.
I have no idea if he had composed music for any movie or
rendered songs in other languages.

This was not really a later but an *earlier* song of his, from Anilda's
JEET (1949). Jaan Pehchaan was a 1950 release.

The name is Shankar Dasgupta. He is from the era when even
Bongs could sing well. His songs can be heard in many Anil
Biswas films. Milan ('upar hai.n baadariyaa kaarii' is just grand),
Girls' School (his beautiful singing is completely overshadowed
by Lata), Jeet, a boring duet in Do Raahaa, plus songs I haven't
heard in Aakaash, Mehmaan and the unreleased Chaand.
For other MDs, he had sung 10 to 20 songs. IIRC he sang
for one D C Dutt. Who was this D C Dutt? I remember browsing
the hfgk one day page by page for 1948-1950 years to find
how prolific Shankar Dasgupta was.

PS : I searched for 'Dasgupta' and set author=snehal. Sure enough,
up popped a rabbit. Shankar Dasgupta composed music for 'Shiishe
kii diiwaar' - 1954. Mr Oza had covered one song in the film for ATMJH,
# 270, did a bit of Lata bashing (habits die hard) and called it a desert
island soundtrack.
darbaan/1946 with Kaushalya
tum ba.De woh ho jii, bas ta.Dapaanaa jaanoo
A very cute song.

Roshan's "Do Roti" (1957) has a nice duet by him and Suman: sun lo ji sun lo
fateh ki baat, roti bina jeevan hai kaali raat.

Shirish Kanekar had mentioned in an article that Lata
requested Anilda to overcome his indifference to Rafi.
Anilda agreed to give him a chance and recorded some
songs in Do Raha in Rafi's voice. But he wasn't satisfied
and asked Talat to sing the final versions. Later, Kanekar
said that Shankar Dasgupta (not Rafi) might have recorded
versions which were discarded. This cannot be ruled out.
But then I won't be surprised if Kanekar changed his story
on request by Anil-da or Rafi's camp. I am just speculating.
I asked Anilda who had sung the discarded versions. He said
he would rather not answer my question at all. The more
I tried to get him to talk, in an essentially brief conversation,
the more guarded he became. I asked whether SOME singer
(never mind his identity) had been given a chance to sing
Talat's songs first. He said it would be better if I dropped
the topic. He said every time he had answered such questions,
they inevitably triggered queries which caused him bother
he could do without.
