Aaji Asamaye Jomunar Kule Keno (By Saigal & Suprova Ghosh; Lyrics :
Ajay Bhattacharya)
Sakhi Ke Se Romoni Kaho …Kaanchan Barani Ke Bate Se Dhani (By Saigal ;
Lyrics : Chandidas)
The best part of the story is that these songs have come alive with
the release of the movie itself (also considered to be lost /
destroyed) !!! The film ‘Jeeban Maran’ starring KL Saigal, Banu
Bandyopadhyaya and Lila Desai in lead roles, is now available in the
form of a set of two VCDs (very good quality video and good audio
reproduction) released as a ‘Classic Collection’ by Angel Video,
Shakespeare Sarani, Calcutta and being marketed on the internet by
Angel Digital (P) Limited, 1, A.J.C. Bose Road, Kolkata – 700 020.

This development comes as a very welcome event when New Theatres,
Calcutta and innumerable fans are celebrating completion of 75 of this
great institution. As music lovers are aware, as many as 150 movies
with wholesome entertainment were produced between 1931 and 1955. More
importantly, New Theatres nurtured and drew upon a pool of
extraordinary talent in film making – directors, music composers,
singing stars and technicians.
It is hoped that some of the Saigal and other films which are still
available with an individual here and a collector there, are
commercially released afresh as VCDs / DVDs by New Theatres as part of
their diamond jubilee celebrations.

How Many Songs Did Saigal Sing ?
Saigal is credited with having recorded a total of 185 songs most of
them as Gramophone Studio recordings issued as 78 rpm discs and the
rest as recorded movietrack songs. Though not all ‘fans’ of Saigal had
the privilege of listening to them, audio recordings were available
for only 170 of them. For the very first time, all the 170 songs (as
well as additional movietrack version song) can now be previewed at
www.kundanlalsaigal.com
The remaining 15 songs (4 Hindi & 11 Bengali) are on the soundtracks
of those movies of which film prints which were considered to be lost
or destroyed. (www.kundanlalsaigal.com/Saigal-Audio-MissingSongs.htm)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Last Time a Saigal Song was ‘discovered’ was when a rare non-film
Bhajan “Hari bin koi kaam na aayo…” which was never issued on disc was
found. The credit for unearthing this song goes entirely to Har Mandir
Singh "Hamraaz", noted Compiler of the multi-volume monumental
publication ‘Hindi Film Geet Kosh’ and one of the compilers of the
authoritative work "Jab Dil Hi Toot Gaya" on KL Saigal, according to
Prof Surjit Singh .
How did this happen ? The story as told by Late Hem Chandra Jain, a
discerning collector of Hindi film music, is that after getting it
recorded in the studio of Hindustan Records, caught in a whimsical
mood, Saigal grabbed this recording, and took it away to his house.
Maybe the singer was not satisfied with his singing and did not want
it to go to public with the song, he speculated.

Saigal fan bhai,

the KC Dey
Wonderful news, Surender. Saigal fans the world over owe
you a debt of gratitude.
On an aside...I found the (few) Saigal films I have watched very
well produced and well composed. There are few or no
ridiculous jumps of logic, or contortions in the storyline. A
number of them are New Theatres productions and credit
must surely go to the director(s) of these films.
One song, "pyaarii pyaarii suurato.n ..... madad karo, madad karo"
(Dushman, 1939) is striking.
How often have we seen in Hindi films that some forlorn soul
is singing in location xyz and a kindred soul hears that tearsome
message via telepathic transmission and is spurred to
immediate action?
Well, Saigal is singing this in front of a mike, presumably being
broadcast, and the heroine is driving around in a car (top down,
if I recall), fiddling with the dials of a radio. She hears this song
on the radio, realizes the message is intended for her, stops
and turns around.
All this in 1939! Were car radios already a known entity at
that time? Or was the movie so prescient?
The song can be found on Youtube...thanks to all those
souls who have uploaded Saigal videos to Youtube.
Maybe Surender can have a link from his site to the
Youtube videos with appropriate disclaimers...We had a
thorough enough discussion on that here, so we would
want to avoid a repeat of such transgressions, wouldn't we?
Vijay
It is very often we have seen in Hindi films that some forlorn soul is
singing in location xyz and a kindred soul hears that tearsome message via
telepathic transmission and is spurred to immediate action. You can see such
scene in 1 of every 10 india movies. Yes, car radios already a known entity
at that time although only rich people can have such device on their cars.
The car radio at that time costed around $1,500. Still, there were some rich
people can afford it. The movie was not prescient. As I said, car radio was
available at that time, but only a few people can afford it. It did not
reference a future hi-tech invention.Yes, we would avoid a repeat of such
transgressions. Too many repeative talk can make everyone tire.
