Yes. In fact, the original is a Telugu movie starring N.T.Rama Rao,
Savitri and Nageswara Rao. It was then made into Tamil with Gemini
Ganesan, Savitri and Thangavelu playing the corresponding roles. The
film was called "Missiamma". The Hindi came last with Meena Kumari and
Kishore Kumar replacing Savitri and Thangavelu respectively.

The music of the Telugu/Tamil version (composed by S.Rajeswara Rao
IIRC) is much superior to the Hindi version, IMO.

From what I have learned, Jamuna played same role in Tamil, Hindi
and Telgu versions.

What is the Telugu/Tamil equivalent of the duet "sakhi ri sun bole
papiha us paar"?

IIRC "raga sudharasa" comes closest as its the only female-female duet
in the Telugu version
of the movie. As such there is no one to one tune mapping between the
songs of the Telugu
and Hindi versions.

Some equivalents can be deciphered based on similarity in words.
brindavamadi andaridi vs brindavan ka krishn kanhaiyya
ravoyi chandamana vs o raat ke musafir chandaa zaraa baatde

For others, one has to go back to the movie and do a contextual
mapping.

The Telugu Missamma was itself based on a Bengali play. Chakrapani,
one of the writer/directors of Vijaya-Vauhini films, was an expert in
Bengali.

S Rajeswararao also assisted Hemantkumar in the Hindi remake Miss
Mary.

Thanks very much(to all) for many posts that are very informative.
So was the Telugu version was also "Missiamma" ?
The Hindi version was dubbed into Sinhala in the 50's.
The Sinhala name was "Ahinsaka Prayogaya"

The Telugu version is "Missamma". There's no "i" after the miss.
btw did Haroon Lanthra sing any songs in "Ahinsaka Prayogaya" ?

there are no Haroon Lanthra songs in "Ahinsaka Prayogaya"
which means Innocent Prank (in response to UVR)
singers were
Latha Walpola (nee Fernando)
Mohideen Baig (born Indian but moved to SL when very young
and settled in SL)
Dharmadasa Walpola (Latha married him later)
P Susheela
All songs are fantastic - to me as good as the Hindi ones.

Thanks for answering the question about the meaning
of the film name. Is the Sinhala version's soundtrack
easily available? Could you point me to a location
(online or otherwise) where I can hear the songs?

fortunately all songs from this movie are available at
http://www.infolanka.com/miyuru_gee/
It is a good site - I have been using for years - no pop ups
go to the link above
and click on search button
then type Ahinsaka Prayoogaya -
note how the second word is spelled with two 'o' s
if not just type Ahinsaka
then you will get 17 songs
what you want are the songs 6 to 14
i think that is the complete set. years ago there was a borken link
which affter I alerted the owner fixed it.
Let me know how it goes
