ANURADHA PAUDWAL

Anuradha- Paudwal is one of the most talented playback singers in the history
of Hindi films and perhaps one of the most controversial artistes. Her career
started with the film Abhimaan starring Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, the music
director was S. D. Burman, though Lata Mangeshkar claims that Anuradha was
given a break by her brother Hridhaynath Mangeshkar for a Marathi film. But it
was Burmandada's film that got her the recognition of a singer.

Anuradha Paudwal was a student of Xavier's college who participated in the
college's cultural programmes, but she did not have a background of film
music,
she married Arun Paudwal who was the music arranger of S. D. Burman.

In 1976 Anuradha got her big break for the film Kailcharan starring Shatrugan
Sinha and Reena Roy. This Subhash Ghai film had music by Rajesh Roshan. Her
first solo number was for the film Aap Beeti starring Hema Malini and
ShashiKapoor and music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Anuradha Paudwal got some good
numbers
from the duo who were churning out hits one after the other. She also sang
intermittently for other music directors such as Rajesh Roshan (Des Pardes),
Jaidev (Dooriyan, Laila Majnu), Kalyanji-Anandji (Kalaakar, Vidhataa) and Usha
Khanna (Souten, Sajan Bina Suhagan). Meanwhile her husband Arun Paudwal in the
pair of Anil-Arun gave many hit numbers in Marathi films for which Anuradha
sang some resplendent numbers in Marathi like Disatein Mazlaa (Ashtavinayak),
Raja Lalkaari, Kaalya Maatita Maatitaa, etc.

Anuradha Paudwal became a singer to reckon with when she rendered some
exceptional numbers for the film Hero, music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Her song
for Mere Mann Bajaa Mirang Utsav won her the first Filmfare award in 1985.

She also came into focus when she challenged Lata Mangeshkar's claim to having
recorded the maximum number of songs in a single day. She also accused the
Mangeshkar sisters for indulging in monopoly.this outspoken nature at times
landed her in trouble as the music directors of
the industry feared to face the wrath of Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle and
they avoided Anuradha Paudwal often. Many a times Anuradha's songs were dubbed
by Lata such as Main Teri Dushman (Nagina) and many such songs.

Disillusioned, since her career was not making any headway, she joined hands
with Gulshan Kumar who was about to bring a revolution in the music industry.
Her success streak began from the film Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka, Tezaab, Ashiqui,
Meera Ka Mohan, Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, Ram Lakhan, etc. Her success in a way
set a trend for the singers, such as Kavita Krishnamurthy, Alka Yagnik and
Sadhana Sargam. Who started getting better songs to sing and through T-series
Anuradha Paudwal brought the playback singers into focus. Her new found status
also got her involved in some controversies like dubbing songs of her
contemporaries (the infamous dubbing of Alka Yagnik's songs of the films Dil
and more recently Itihaas), also her much rumoured affair with Gulshan Kumar.
Her dominance in the T-series had fueled the rumours.
Despite the controversies, Paudwal continued to conquer new horizons and
winning accolades (Anuradha has won three Filmfare awards in a row for
Aashiqui, Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin and Beta in a row). She was on the verge of
being the next Lata Mangeshkar. Even the legendary composer O. P. Nayyar
commented, " Lata is finished, Anuradha has replaced her." During this
period,
everything seemed to be working for the singer who left her contemporaries far
behind. Kavita Krishnamurthy has always stated that, "Among my counterparts
(Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Sadhana Sargam, etc.) Anuradha is the best
singer."

In her peak time Anuradha Paudwal announced that she would exclusively sing
for
T-series only. This stand benefited Alka Yagnik who just zoomed to the top
with
newfound association with Nadeem-Shravan and Anu Malik, who had stopped
composing for Gulshan Kumar due to some differences. As she stopped singing
songs for films and concentrated more on devotional and cover-version albums,
she harmed her immensely successful career. For almost five years, Anuradha
Paudwal did not sing for many films and for any other music company.

It was only recently that she started rendering songs for companies outside
T-series. After the brutal murder of Gulshan Kumar, her hold over T-series
diminished. Anuradha Paudwal has started singing outside T-series and met with
lukewarm response. So far she has given a few hits like Kismat Se Tum (Pukar)
Akeli Hai Yeh Miss Khiladi (Mr & Mrs Khiladi), Zara Aankhon Se Kajal (Hum
Aapke
Dil Mein Rehtein Hai), Chaha Hai Tujhko (Mann) and Jogiya (Deewane). But only
time will tell if this talented crooner can regain her past glory.

This statement is the real reason why her career tanked.
She forgot that it is the recording companies who make
and market music. By snubbing, powerhouses like HMV,
and others, did she think that all those companies would
be replaced by T-series and she would replace Lata
just like that (It is the money stupid).
This is what arrogance is, and people pay big
price for the arrogance. Lata realized after snubbing O. P. Nayyar
but learned a lesson and tried not to discount any unknown MD.
All music lovers suffered because of the arrogance of these Lata
and Anuradha.

Her voice is really good.

Yes she could have but we would never know.

To each his/her own.

But the subject title is very appropriate - "....was the next Lata".

And I underscore "Was". :-))

Happy listenings.

In the recent past 5 years Anuradha has had chance to sing and although a
few have been on the charts,
I cannot recall one that have gone to # 1. Let me know if you know.
Meantime both Lata and Asha have had songs on the charts in the top 3
inspite of the fact that they
have not been singing as much as they did earlier. From Asha's Mujhe Rang
De just in recent past
to Lata's Humko Humise Churalo and now the recent duet with Sonu Khamoshiyan
Gungune Lagi
quickly up the charts to number 1, what more does one expect from this
legend at 71 ?
The one Anuradha duet with Sonu in Pukar was on the charts but just listen
to her gasping to pull the
notes in the first part of the song although she did manage well in the
second part. Anuradha is only capable
of singing just simple romantic songs such as Dhak Dhak Karne Laga or Bahut
Pyar Karte Hain from Saajan
or Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahin. And anyways Alka Yagnik has done a super job of
being a playback singer
that molds the voice well for all the young actresses of today and she sings
flawlessly and without a trace
of accent unlike Kavita Krishnamurthy. Alka is now truly the queen of
playback singing amongst the new singers.
Yet she is no match to Udit Narayan. Udit Narayan in my opinion is what sets
apart a good singer. It is the
originality as well as the feelings that emanates from their singing. To me
after the likes of Mukesh, Kishore, Rafi,
Asha, Lata, Hemant Kumar, Manna Dey , Mahendra Kapoor, Talat Mahmood it is
Udit Narayan who makes
a difference in this generation. When he sings he not sings it so
effortlessly but there this sweetness that oozes.
One can feel the difference. And the consistency is always there in each and
every song he renders. Alka and Sonu
who sing many of their songs to perfection lack this something extra that
Udit and the singers of past generation
have imparted. And as for Kumar Sanu no matter how well you sing, it is just
a Kishore Clone, a feeble copy.
Like Nitin Mukesh when he sings like Daddy the voice is there but sounds
very weak when compared with the
original. I mention Mahendra Kapoor above , although he was called a Rafi
clone , I beg to differ. He had a unique
voice that was also full of vigor. And he could pull high notes. The big
difference was that his voice modulation was
somewhat very limited to few actors wheras Rafi's suited to a majority of
actors but with a few exceptions such as
Raj Kapoor or Dev Anand. Although Rafi was alright in some of the songs on
Dev, it was Kishore who came out
matching to Dev and Amitabh as well as Rajesh Khanna. In conclusion Anuradha
could never have reached the # 1 spot
even if she was singing for other labels. She would have been more like what
other singers are facing now opposite
Alka Yagnik, who happens to sing almost all songs and who seems to be a
music directors choice as was Lata in her
busy days in the past. Why isn't anyone talking of the current monopoly that
seems to have taken effect with Alka.
Actually it is not the monopoly. It is what one can deliver to what is
required and Alka is the best amongst the lot
to deliver what is playback singing with a difference. That is voice that is
precisely modulated to the actress for whom
she is rendering. Ofcourse even Alka couldn't possibly deliver a song like
Nimbooda Nimbooda or Que Sera Sera as
Kavita did in H.D.D.C.S and in Pukar. And for Chitra every time I hear her I
am listening to a poor Asha copy and
as for Jaspinder Narula a fine singer with good range but limited to only
certain type of songs. If anyone who can cry
monopoly it would be Kavita against Alka unless Kavita prefers home life
more than being busy at the recording studios.
