Song: Kahan Tak Jafa Hunsnwaloon Ki Sehate
Jawani Jo Rehati To Phir Ham Na Rehate
Film: Tohafa (1947)
Music: M. A. Rouf
Lyrics: Saqib Lukhnavi (pardon my spelling)
Singer: Mukesh
*ing: ?
In my most 'humble' opinion, this gazal is the best gazal in hindi
films. I can
not imagine any other coming to any close to this. Well, my
opinion :)
Coming to song itself, the singing, lyrics and music is really at it's
peak
here, in a 'Suron-Ki-TriveNi'. The 'veena' is used very effectively by
MD. The
film also have some more Mukesh songs. Total 4 (or 5?). Three solos
and one
duet with Hamida Bano. I will mention today this duet which is truly
in a
vintage (Bhule Bisre) category:
Jeene Ki Surat Ho Gayi, Bas? Teri Badaualat Ho Gayi
Samazo Ke Mohobat Ho Gayi, Samazo Ke Mohobat Ho Gayi
I could not find lyrics in Gitayan. Please correct he
mistakes .Thanks..
Bharat, I fully agree with your choice of the Mukesh Ghazal; I think
Mukesh is as his best here.

I believe I have this song on a HMV CS that was
part of a series celebrating 5 decades of songs
in Hindi films...It had 2 CS per decade, with
labels like "Swinging Sixties" etc.

A background song. The last stanza is repeated
at the end of the movie.
The Gazal had another sh'er:
miree naav is Gam ke dariyaa meN *Saqib*
kinaare pe aa hii lagii behte behte
[mirii >> short for merii]
The song is also available at Surjit's site and was also available at
Indianscreen.
It is indeed great singing by Mukesh and great lyrics. IMO, the tune
is ok but pretty much follows the template followed for a number of
ghazals in 30s and 40s (a better example of similar style is "Aah ko
chahiye" by Saigal) and also a tad slow paced.
