I'm sorry it took me my standard three weeks to post this one
--- it's a tough job coming up with new adjectives to compliment
wonderful songs. I tried for a while and then just resigned myself to
using the same old ones...
Reviewing this tape was probably the easiest of the four, as
this one's more full of the hits rather than the 'rare' ones. Since
many of the songs are penned by Gulzar, quite naturally the selection
contains a number of songs I am very fond of.
As usual, opinions expressed are my own and do not reflect
those of people who disagree with them.
The Genius of R D Burman --- Golden Collection
Cassette 3
Side A:
1. suhaani chaandani raatein hamein sone nahin deti - Mukti (1977)
Mukesh, lyrics: Anand Bakshi
Okayish song, although nothing fantastic. Don't know anything
else about the movie.
2. samay tu dheere dheere chal - Karm (1977)
Kishore & Asha, lyrics: Raj Kavi Tulsi
Nice song, very nice lyrics. I like the way Asha starts the
song and Kishore joins in the end. The movie starred Rajesh
Khanna and Vidya Sinha AFAIR, a pretty unusual pair. This song
also has another version 'samay tu jaldi jaldi chal' in the
film.
3. gulmohar gar tumhaara naam hota - Devata (1978)
Kishore & Lata, lyrics: Gulzar
Extremely sweet song, also appears on 'Pancham'. Kishore and
Lata both sound very nice here along with lovely lyrics which
make the song even sweeter. Hallmark Gulzar of course. This
movie, starring Sanjeev Kumar and Shabana Azmi, has another
one of my favourite Kishore/Lata duets --- 'chaand chura ke
laaya hoon, chal baithe church ke peechhe'.
4. rimjhim gire saawan - Manzil (1979)
Kishore, lyrics: Yogesh
One of my (and probably every music lover's) all-time
favourite Kishore solos. The tandem version sung by Lata is
not very famous, but is exceedingly sweet too. This movie *ing
Amitabh and Moushumi also has another lovely Kishore solo with
wonderful lyrics --- 'tum ho mere dil ki dhadkan tum bin lage
na man'.
5. saawan ke jhoole pade, tum chale aao - Jurmaana (1978)
Lata, lyrics: Anand Bakshi
This is the slower of the two versions of this song. Quite a
sweet song, though I prefer the faster version (also in Lata's
voice).
6. kabhi kabhi sapna lagta hai - Ratnadeep (1979)
Kishore & Asha, lyrics: Gulzar
Very very sweet song, with lovely lyrics, which can be
understood better if one has seen the movie or knows its
story. Very nice flute interludes and both Asha and Kishore
sound wonderful. This movie has another lovely Asha solo ---
'aisaa ho to kaisa hoga' which appears on the 'Asha sings for
RD' Golden Collection.
7. ek baat kahoon gar maano tum - Golmaal (1979)
Lata, lyrics: Gulzar
A very nice song as it describes some very 'cute' incidents,
but it is Lata's singing that mars this song. My main gripe
about it is Lata's giggling --- it just doesn't work. On a
more generic note, I think Asha does a much better giggle than
Lata. That would be a funny topic for a discussion, wot? :)
Side B:
8. bhor bhaye panchhi dhun ye sunaaye - Aanchal (1980)
Lata, lyrics: Majrooh
A beautiful song, with nice lyrics too. This song has a lovely
tune and Lata's voice matches it. A more famous song from this
film is KK-Lata's 'bas meri jaan bas'.
9. kis ki sadaayen, mujhko bulaayen - Red Rose (1980)
Kishore & Asha, lyrics: Nida Fazli
An extremely lovely romantic duet with both Kishore and Asha
in their element. A very very distinctly RDB tune. 'Red Rose'
was one of the superflop films that confirmed the end of the
Rajesh Khanna era, but the soundtrack is worth a buy. This
movie is available in combination with 'Ajnabee' (bheegi
bheegi raaton mein, hum dono do premi, ek ajnabi haseena se
etc) and 'Phir Vohi Raat' (my favourite --- sang mere nikale
the saajan and others). All three are RDB soundtracks and
a must-buy for any RDB fan.
10. main hoon diya sooni raat ka - Jal Mahal (1979)
Lata, lyrics: Majrooh
Decent song; one of Lata's numerous bhoot-bangla songs of
woman in white roaming around big haveli with candle in hand.
In this case the woman is Rekha; and Jeetendra unravels the
suspense (if I remember correctly).
11. kabhi palkon pe aansoon hai - Harjaee (1980)
Kishore, lyrics: Nida Fazli
A beautiful song and probably the most known song of this
movie along with 'tere liye palkon ki jhaalar bunoon'. This
movie has some other nice songs such as 'yeh rut hai haseen',
'tujh sa haseen dekha na kaheen' and 'kherishu varishu'. HMV
combos it with 'Dhongee', another RDB soundtrack with some
pretty freaky numbers like 'haai re haai tera ghunghTa'.
Looking at #9 and #11, Nida Fazli certainly deserves more
recognition on RMIM. Can fellow RMIMers contribute some
information, please?
12. aaja sar-e-bazaar tera pyaar bik rahaa hai - Alibaba aur 40 chor (1980)
Lata, lyics: Anand Bakshi
Decent song. I personally like Asha's 'khatouba' and the
Lata/Asha duet 'saare shahar mein ek haseen hai' better. Was
this movie a hit when it released? I remember the female leads
being Hema and Zeenat, probably Dharmendra was Alibaba. Can
someone name the 40 chor? :)
13. raah pe rehtein hain - Namkeen (1981)
Kishore, lyrics: Gulzar
A fantastic song with some fabulous music. It also appears on
'Pancham', Gulzar's tribute to RDB. Asha's 'phir se aaiyo
badra bidesi' and 'aake chali baake chali' make this entire
soundtrack a must-have. The EMI CD combo of Golmaal / Namkeen
/ Sitaara is a definite must-buy for RDB-Gulzar fans.
That concludes cassette 3 of the Golden Collection --- The
Genius of R D Burman. I will try to post the concluding part of this
4-part series soon.
Renu.

This one is from Satyam Shivam Sundaram. Lyrics by Anand Bakshi. Music by
LP. SSS seems to have more than one lyricist. The wonderful RMIM
automailer lists Pt. Narendra Sharma in the lyricists too.

This 4-pack seems to be a *MUST* buy...
I can't seem to find it locally tho' :'(

Was it Shashi or was it one of the Mukherjee brothers in this one??
Btw, no idea how I could confuse Shashi with the Mukherjees :) :)
> 3. gulmohar gar tumhaara naam hota - Devata (1978)
> Kishore & Lata, lyrics: Gulzar
Gullu badshah has used gulmohar in his recent songs in Aastha.
Nice the way he compares the color of Gulmohar to aag ki lapTen...
Btw, a question about the Aastha song... Does it mean what I think
it means??
It goes
tan pe lagti, kaaNch ki booNdeN, man pe lageN toh jaane
I could come up with the following interp -
Somebody has given the girl some trinket or bauble made of glass
and not diamonds, and she is complaining that since it is glass,
it just touches her body and not her soul { Only diamonds can
speak to the soul... :)}
This might not be such a far-fetched explanation, tho'.. :)
It seems Basu Bhat. has made this film about the rise of materialism
in the middle class...

This is one of the first movie memories tha I have. Sanjeev's name is
Tony, right?? I remember when we went to see Pati Patni aur Woh, asking
my Mom how Tony was here too... :) :)
Btw, what does the chaand chura ke laaya hooN song mean??

Er... why stop at just giggles?? :) :)
Btw, another q here. I personally have found songs which require
the singer to say a few words in a semi-prose way or do giggles
to be really tough to sing. Y'all's opinions??
Also, when the males among us, are trying to hum/sing female songs
do they make their voices hi-pitched/falsetto like?? I have found
this to be the case with me in the few times that I do try to murder
female songs.... Also does the reverse happen for females??
> 9. kis ki sadaayen, mujhko bulaayen - Red Rose (1980)

What's that other song from Red Rose... Kishore sings it....
Very likeable....

Phir Vohi Raat was my first 'horror' movie. And y'all might find
it amusing now, but was I scared?!!! What's the KK song in this movie??

And 'Jaadugar, jaadoo kar jaa'ega' finds no mention?? :) Loved
KK in it.
Btw, the chors were not only wearing 'roosii topii's but were actually
Russian. Was it the third Indo-Russian production ever?? I seem
to remember two earlier movies - Pardesi - *ing Nargis & Padmini with
a Russian hunk and Mera Naam Joker *RajK with a beauteous one
Others, that I remember since are the new Sohni-Mahiwaal and Ajooba..
Finally, thanks for all the other movie-combo information that you
give in the series, Renu. Several must-buys there...
Later,

Pretty OK movie , thanks to Sanjeev Kumar.

No dbout about this. This song comes straight in my top 10 songs of KK / RDB

The film was no where near the tamil original in which KamalHassan and
Sridevi acted. Even the songs were so disappointing (IMO) , atleast by the
great RDB/Rajesh Khanna standards. You have to listen to the music of it's
tamil version ( by Ilayaraja) to see the difference. The songs were
excellent and the background score was just of the world. I have no
hesitation is saying that compared to tamil version , RDB did a bad job in
Hindi.
.... < rest snipped >
I find Part 3 distinctly inferior to first two parts. The reason is simple.
Part consist of early 80's and late 70's songs when RDB was not as great as
he was in 60's , early 70's to 1977-78.
I am sure that part 4 which will be of 80's song will be quite inferior.
PS: this is my opinion only.

There are two -- one is a triplet (for want of a better
description) with Asha and Sushama Shreshtha, and the solo is
'chhalkaao jhoom ke paimaana khushi kaa'.

Another attempt at introducing lovey-dovey words from a
phaarin lingo, I'd think... Like the 'Preeti' song which did French or
the 'Meri adaalat' number trying "Nakamichi" in Japanese...

There is also the disastrous circus movie with Mithun, a
Russian trapeze gal as the leading lady and Varsha Usgaonkar as the
local love interest that came in the late '80s --- name escapes me at
the moment.

Here are the details from Phir Vohi Raat-Ajnabee-Red Rose combo by HMV :
Phir Vohi Raat (1980), MD : R.D. Burman, Lyr : Majrooh
1) Bindiya tarse naina barse - Lata
2) Phir vohi raat aayi Jaanejaa - Asha
3) Ghar se nikale the sajan - KIshore & Lata
4) Dekho idhar dekho - Kishore & Asha
5) Chhalkao jhoom ke paimana khushi ka - Kishore & Chorus
6) Aa gaye yaron jeene ke din - Rafi & Chorus
I think I'm missing the 'triplet' you mention.
IMHO, a very average album by RDB...The Lata solo and KK-lata duet
are very interestingly tuned.
Arun
"Dekho idhar dekho" is a triplet with Kishore, Asha and Sushma.

If so, a very pretty composition with the echo used to good effect

I have a question about the song "tum ho mere dil ki dhadkan." Four
years back I have listened to a song by Procul Harum - `Whiter shade
of pale.' It is easy to detect that the prelude and interlude of this
song is same as the tune of the first three lines of "tum ho mere dil
ki dhadkan" - i.e., from "tum ho mere......." to "..... tumko dekha
karte hai" . Later, I read on a cover of an album by Procul Harum
that, this tune of prelude-interlude was actually taken from some
Schubert's composition, but it was not mentioned which one. Does
anybody has any idea?
Yup, thats the one...another beautiful feature of this song is the
humming that goes on in the background for a while after the "echo",
until almost the beginning of the antara.
I think the humming was done by none other than Lata.
