Let's get this straight once and for all guys. SPB DID NOT sing
this song (Mannil Inda) in one breath during the movie recording. There
was an article in a local magazine at that time that said that the song was
mixed after recording in bits in different tracks. Not that it is impossible
for some one of the calibre of SPB to do it but the fact is he did not. I saw
him perform this song during Ilayaraja's 500th movie celebrations(ANJALI). He
ran out of breath after three lines and then frequently took breaths to complete
the song. But he was skillful enough not to lose the tune.
There are definitely other songs that require a great deal of breath
control. In particular, two songs come to mind. One is a tamil song and another
is a Malayalam song.
Tamil song: Kanmaniye kaadhal enbadhu... (SPB and S.Janaki)
Malayalam song: Ramakatha....(Yesudas)-This song is incredible in the second
paragraph when Yesudas starts it with the notes SA RI SA SA SA RI SA.....
and goes on and on. One can clearly note that he takes in a breath at certain
points but the song is very difficult to sing due to its range and control.

Another song in this category is Manna Dey's "Lapak Jhapak tu aa re
badarava" ... Apart from the difficulty this song poses in terms of the
classical alaaps, there is this one line where Manna truly takes off ...

Ban mein koyal kukh uti hai sab ke man mein bhook uthi hai
Ban mein koyal kooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ... this lasts some 15 secs
.. (haven't measured) ... and what's remarkable is that he sings the
next line w/o breathing !!!

Is the song you are refering to (Yesudas) from the movie Bharatam, which
won a national award for best song of the year, best singer of the year
and the best actor ?

Steve Young rolls to the right, connects with Jerry Rice who's going up
the middle .. he is going .. going ALL THE WAY ... 80 yard pass TD 49ers ...
