Appropriate Way to List Artists Name for Prakash Kaur & Surinder
Kaur's Duets
/ Punjabi - Non-Film
==========================================================

Based on information gathered from 2 web-pages, I gather that Prakash
was
about 10 years older than Surinder Kaur and that both of them sang in
private gatherings (including marraige ceremonies) at an early age.

Their first record was a duet - Haye Na Vas Ve, Na Vas Badra (flip
side -
Dol Sipahi Ve Kithe Gayon), recorded at All India Radio, Lahore in
1943.
The music was composed by: Inayat Hussain

The next record made was also for AIR, Lahore and featured the song -
Mawaan Te Dhiyaan Ral Bathiyan Ni Maayen, Part 1 + 2 and was composed
by Pandit Amar Nath (one site listed this as the first song, recorded
in 1943)

Thereafter, they recorded many songs for HMV, India. My collection is
entirely
from LPs and some tapes, which were re-issued from 78 rpm records.
On some
LPs. HMV did not list the names of singers, while on other the credit
was
given as - PRAKASH KAUR & SURINDER KAUR and some times
in reverse order.

For my own database, I have adopted a different criteria. In a duet
(or multi-singers
song), the singer who first renders a solo line is listed first.
Siniority or
high-handedness in getting her / his name listed first (lot of Lata's
duets from 60s
onwards) is is not a good enough reason to accept the 'AS IS'
listing from HMV .
Ofcourse, there are exceptions, e.g.: Lop-sided duets - LEADER - Daiya
Re Daiya
for which the artists are listed as - Asha + Rafi, even though Rafi
rendered the
opening lines.

Now the dilemma I am facing is how to give credit for P & S kaurs
duets, where
both sang all the lines together. It seems Surinder Kaur is regarded
as a better
singer than her elder sister. So, should I give the credit as

Option 1: Surinder Kaur & Prakash Kaur or

Option 2: Prakash Kaur + Surinder Kaur

The list of songs on my 'Good Song' list are

A: from: LP - 1 / ECLP 2255 Published in 1961 (my
estimate)
(Artists
info not listed)

1 Sarke Sarke Jandiye, Part 1 + 2

2 Sui We Sui ... Sui Tangi

3 Suhe We Cheere Waliya

B: from: LP -2 / ECLP 2277 Published in 1962

4 Kala Doria Kunde Nal

5 Bajre Da Sitta

C: from: LP - 3 / ECLP 2289 Published in 1963

6 Mawan Te Dhiyaan Ral , Part 1 + 2

7 Haye Na Was Ve

D: from: EP - Shabads / EMOE 513 Published in ? -

8 Machhiwade Wich Baitha Shahenshah

Just a tidbit about Prakash Kaur. Her son Paul Suri started jointly 89.3 FM
radio
station in Central New Jersey many years ago. Picture of Prakash Kaur hangs
in
our recording studio.

The singer Deedar Singh Pardesi has some very nice old pictures on
his site. The picture no.19 taken in the year 1967 is of both the
sisters.

Minor nitpick: these two tracks are to be termed 'devotional songs'
and not 'Shabads' by definition (the latter terminology is used only
for poems taken from the Adi Granth... therefore, even stuff from the
Dasam Granth (Guru Gobind's writings) would not be called 'Shabads'
per his own request!
