A few of the songs in the list are from a 90-minute cassette
titled "SD Burman Sings, Pankaj Mullick Sings", with non-
existent documentation. I saw it with a friend and promptly
got meself a copy. Not sure whether he bought it like that
or juxtaposed two different cassettes. All this is preamble
to the request that, if you suspect that a track might not
be by Pankaj Mullick, do speak up! Likewise if you know
that any of them is a film song.

The last song in the tape mentioned above was a nice
ghazal by a singer who is certainly not Pankaj Mullick
(or SD Burman). Does anyone know anything about it?

Isn't this from the 1952 Dev Anand movie 'Zalzala'?

#3-6, #9-14, #16 have been released by HMV on different
LP-s and more recently on a CD titled "Golden Collection
- PM". #15 used to be on Bhule Bisre Geet, and its surely
PM.
On a related note, a popular bhajan of PM in the 40s was
'tuu dhuu.NDhataa hai jisako'. He even used to teach this
song on AIR's "sa.ngiit shikshhaa" programme. But he got
Dhananjay Bhattacharyya to record this song for the movie
'Yatrik'(1951). In the films division documentary on him,
PM sings this song partially with his daughter. I guess he
never recorded this song on disc and AIR archives might be
only source for this song in his voice.

One may consider adding the 3 songs from My Sister (Meri Bahen - 1944)
, as Semi-NonFilm or Semi-Film
In the film and on the corresponding 78 rpm records, the songs were
rendered by Saigal.
The songs are:
Ae Qatib-e-Taqdeer
Do Naina Matware
Chhupo No x 3, O Pyari Sajaniya
Sudhir
Seems you confused the song from "Zalzala"(pawan chale zor) with a
similar
worded song from "Doctor" above.
> Have anyone heard a solo version of the song? My memory fails but I

Zalzala songs recently released by HMV feature the PM+chorus version.
-Prithviraj
> Jyoti Prakash Guha.
Which compilation? I do have two Zalzala songs (by PM & chorus), but both
from 78rpm sources, and with a lot of hissing and static. I would love to
have all songs of Zalzala, preferably a good recording. But maybe that's
asking too much of the Ramu Diwana & Co. :)
BTW, has anyone seen the VHS/VCD of Zalzala in the market - anywhere - in
India or the US? I saw the film at the Rabindra Rangshala (open air
amphitheter) in New Delhi in 1976 or so, amid a very noisy crowd and could
not really enjoy the film. Any pointers would be welcome.

Happy Listenings.

BTW No 6 & No 12 have a note in my dbase that the song also has "F.
Casanovas & his orchestra" mentioned...more details on this please...
IIRC these songs were released by HMV in 1962

I totally disagree with you on desirability of song: Pran Chahe Nain
Na Chahe
It has been my (and for that matter, for very large number of
listeners) a favorite song for decades. For me the lyrics don't mean
a thing. They were patched
together to fit the tune. Even after listening to them for 100 times,
I can not
figure out what the story is (a la: Gulzar - Shishe Ki Haweli,
Paththar
Gharonde and other contruction materials)
It is Mr. Mullick's superb rendering and excellent orchestra, which has
made this
song so desirable.
I have the Bengali version (sung by Ashoketaru). It is a marginal
song, even for
Bengali music lovers (I got this song from my friend, 'Suno Suno' Ms
Chatterjee)

Since the film songs have also been discussed, I would like to
include
the song from: DHARTIMATA / Duniya Rang Rangili Baba
Excellent song. Generally available on Saigal's compilations (but not
on Pankaj
Mullick's CDs / LPs)
Q for Mr. DasGupta
===============
Can you please give the title of the Tape / CD etc on which ZALZALA's
song was released. Thanks
YATRIK's Song
=============
Tu Dhoondata Hai Jis Ko, was released by HMV on 2 LP (& 2 Tape) set /
Playback 50 years - Volume 2 or so. Ramu Diwana & Co had removed
the
3rd para. I have the complete 78 rpm version, but the source record
was
extremely worn out and the recording is unlistenable. Would like to
get
a copy from a clean-record. Thanks.

On another note did moestro Kamal Das-gupta compose any songs
based on Rabindra Sangeet ? if so can someone help me identify
a few of them .
Thanks ,

Songs of Zalzala(7 songs) are available through hamaracd.com.
I'm not sure if what hamaracd has is the entire soundtrack
for the movie.

Like Shri Sudhir Kakar, I feel that the orchestra has
contributed to the beauty of Pankaj Mullick's rendition
of 'praan chaahe'. But the case for Mullick having used
devices ill-fitting to the spirit of Indian music has been
made in much wider terms and by a respected authority.
I would have liked more leisure to discuss the topic, but
against my better instinct, I am giving in to the impulse
of broaching the topic which I wanted to save for a later
date. I will post details of the criticism directed at Mullick
later. In the meantime, readers are encouraged to draw
their list of earliest villains of Indian Music. Some might
think of Shankar-Jaikishan, some might argue that Indian
music was doomed the day Mohd Rafi entered a recording
studio. These answers make solid sense; but looking
for still-earlier villains is more interesting.
Around 1940, Govindrao Tembe had ranted against
Bengali music. He might have had a point against Bengal
in the classical field. But I reject outright his criticism of
Bengali film music of that era. Bengal had easily outshone film
music from Maharashtra and Punjab in 1930s. But
Tembe never got the hang of the trends in film music. I am
not sure how much pains he took to hear the music which
he was ranting against. He names no names but shoots off
all barrels. He was a scholarly writer on music but 1930s
music passed him by. However, there was another name
who knew that period's music well and found faults with
certain trends. Was he being perceptive, seeing thing which
others have missed to this day? I don't know. All in good
time; stay tuned.

Most of us (I daresay) are quite unfamiliar with the
writings and views of Govindrao Tembe. I would suggest
that some more details (and/or quotes) may be provided
for information and subsequent discussion.

My 2 cents:
In non-films, you can do whatever you want.
In film songs, which are supposedly an integral part of the story and
screenplay, I can tolterate a western orchestra only if the situation
needed it, e.g. in western clubs, foreign cities etc.
I admire Raj Kapoor, e.g. in a movie he a plays a western tune on a
violin (much less use the whole orchestra!) and when Nargis asks him he
explains that he heard it in a club!
Quiz: Name that movie? Name that tune?
> Jyoti Prakash Guha.

Surjit Singh wrote:
The violin piece that Raj Kapoor plays in the movie is

The same film in which Nargis calls the instrument a "Sitaar", not a violin!
:) The tune is just living and dying in the same place.
