I wish to compile RJGK 22 on Talat Mehmood before Mahesh compiles a second
quiz on Lata (Hope that's OK with u, Mahesh).
Sami Mohammed (A Naushad fan)..... still working on the Shanky-J RJGK :-(

Jo kuch bhi hun bahaar ki, chhoTisi ek bhool hun

"Raat Aur Din" is a great film musically speaking, yet another of SJ's
incredible jobs. It is funny that people run them down on the net since they
were pioneers in what they did and composed music that stood the test of time.
It is not fair to evaluate them based on their later compositions since they
changed their style in a big way. The sheer volume that they put out and the
general quality of their music was exceptional. I recently chanced upon a film
of theirs "Ek Phool Chaar KaaNTe" and was amazed at how every single song in the
movie was atleast well above average and a few songs were fantastic. What they
did for RK films was in a section by itself (not my favorite section, but still
had some gems like "Shri 420") and their popularity just based on that was
something else.
I can understand preferring some other music director over them, but to play
down or deny their contribution to Hindi film music is ludicrous.
Here are all the songs in "Raat Aur Din"

IMHO, the best song is :
dil ki girah khol do, chup na baitho koi geet gaao
mehfil mein ab kaun hai ajnabee, tum mere saath aao
S* Lata Mangeshkar & Manna Dey
L* Shailendra
This one is also very good.
jeena humko raas na aaya, hum jaane kyoon jeete hain
kya saawan kya bhaadon, apane sab din rote beete hain
S* Lata Mangeshkar
L* Shailendra
The title song, has two versions.
raat aur din diya jaley, mere man mein phir bhi andhiyaara hai
jaane kahaan hai vo saathi, tu jo mile jeevan ujiyaara hai
S* Lata Mangeshkar
S* Mukesh
L* Hasrat Jaipuri
The rest are average.
na chhedo kal ke afsaane karo is raat ki baaten
chalakne do yeh paimaane karo is raat ki baaten
S* Lata Mangeshkar
L* Shailendra
aawara ai mere dil jaane kahaan hai teri manzil
S* Lata Mangeshkar
L* Shailendra
phool sa chehra, chaand si rangat, chaal kayaamat, kya kahiye
jo bhi dekhe, ho jaaye paagal, apani to haalat, kya kahiye
S* Mohd. Rafi
L* Hasrat Jaipuri

If the music of Raat aur Din can be termed "great", then I agree that Shanky-J
can be called great as well. But, IMHO, among the songs of Raat aur Din,
only "Dil ki girah khol do..." would rank in the truly great songs of that era
although I like "Raat aur din diya jale (the Mukesh version) a lot as well.

^^^^^^^
"Changed" is a cool euphemism you've chosen here, Preetham :-) I agree that it's
not fair to evaluate any MD based on his later compositions, but haven't people
done the same with LP ??
>3] Na chheDo kal ke afsaane Lata Mangeshkar Shailendra
For some strange reason, Lata chose to pick this as the Shanky-J song in the
"Lata in her own voice" collection.
Sami Mohammed (A Naushad fan)... who doesn't like Shanky-J's music much.
