Can you also tell us what makes a song a ghazal?

Happy Listenings.

I think he means GAZAL not GHAZAL.
Most of these are GAZALS and not GHAZALS.

Unfortunately, there is no equivalent of ग़ (ग with anuswar - the
little dot underneath) in English. So 'Gh' is used to represent it.
Other example is the film name Ghulam-e-mustafa. ग़ sounds different
from both ग and घ.
Same thing with श and ष. There are ways for unambiguous
transliteration but they are a little bit clumsy to type and most
people (including me) don't care if it is clear from the context.

back to the point:, but what makes a song a ग़ज़ल?

PS: just in case, u r wondering how to get devnagari letters, go to
Start>Run>CharMap. choose Arial Unicode fonts and scroll down. punjabi,
begali, guj, tamil, etc are also available.

Oops. it is called 'nukta' not 'anuswara'.

Thanks Shulaji for teaching me Devanagri in Unicode. I tried three times to
say thank to you in Nepali but got struck out eventually. However, I was
successful in another Newsgroup which I visit every day. I just get
question marks here? Any idea why?

What? You tried it in Nepali? There are no Nepali letters that I could
find. but I did find some Tibetan letters and the script is closer to
Devanagari than it is to Chinese. hmmm... interesting.

Here is a fix for two popular browsers.
IE:
Step 1. Tools>Options>Fonts. Choose "Arial Unicode MS" for
proportional.
Step 2. Tools>Options>Accessibility. Check "Ignore font styles"

Firefox:
Tools > Options > Fonts & Colors
Select "Sans Serif" for proportional
Select "Arial Unicode MS" under Sans Serif
Check "Always use my fonts" at the bottom

Mozilla and Netscape should not be much different from Firefox. I dont
have other browsers on my comp so I can't help with that. Anyways the
idea is to force the browser to use certain fonts. and it seems to me
that we are deviating from the topic. anyways, glad to help.

PS: it's shukla, not shula. समझे थापाजी!

Submitted with 'malice towards none':

The technical definition of ghazal has been covered before in RMIM and
ALUP a few times. It is a lyrical term and not a tyle of singin. A
ghazal can be sung as a song, a qawwali, a comedic song or rendered
teht-ul-lafz. So, strictly speaking, what makes it a ghazal is how it
is written and not how it is sung. So far so good.

In hindi filmi music, however, a majority take the word ghazal to mean
a style of singing or presentation in the film of a song that, among
other things, may contains gravitas, pathos, personal hurt or romantic
messages/suggestions. It is usually a solo. As an illustration (or
two), take the main song from the movie 'Ghazal': 'aaKhiri giit
muhabbat ka suna duuN to chaluuN....'. It is not technically a ghazal
but is taken as one by most. Or the L-P number, 'mere dushman, tu merii
dostii ko tarse', again not strictly a ghazal but many will call it one
nevertheless.

I suggest that we call such non-ghazal ghazals, gazals!

IMHO, a Ghazal is a ghazal, because it ia form of
Poetry. So whether it is sung in any manner it will
remain a Ghazal. Similarly, a geet or a song will
retain its form whether it is sung in slow or in fast
rhythm.
Here I would like to mention two Ghazals of Sahir
in film Pyasaa. 'hum aap ki aankhoN mein is dil'
and 'tadbiir se big.Di hui taqdir bana ley'.Burman
has composed these Ghazals in geet style, but
can we label these as geet ?

"So, strictly speaking, what makes it a ghazal is how it is written and

so how is a ghazal different from a geet? How can I tell whether a
given piece is a ghazal or not?

@thapa: I don't know what is wrong with your comp but I see devanagari
correctly wherever i posted it but for some reason everything you post
is full of questions. are you playing with me or is this a real issue?

Irfan Sahib, I agree with your first paragraph. I had stated something
similar in mine. As to the second point, I wonder if geet is a way of
singing and not writing as ghazal is. Say, same as qawwalli is a way of
singing and not how it is written. So yes, a ghazal can be sung as a
geet, as in your examples above.

Until about 1997 or so this was the standard RMIM website

http://www.geocities.com/~sm0e/sami.html

Sami Mohammed, a Rafi-Naushad fan, has a collection of articles from
the RMIM archive. There is one about the definition of Ghazal. That may
be helpful to you.

My apologies to the group. I din't know the thread would get carried
this far. My original post was meant for Ajai, who had written about
the GAZALS by L-P. Irfan saab's response was also meant in the same
vein as mine. It appears Mr. Ajai does not read any follow-up posts on
threads created by himself, or he would have cared to respond.

Happy Listenings.

Mr Ajai not only never comes back to read response to his posts, but he
also never tries to understand what others say. About 2 years ago I
tried to explain to him (in many emails) how to write film names and
song lyrics in proper English, but sad to see that he still writes
'Aaya Sawan Zum Ke'.

Shukla Ji:

Happy Dashara (Vijaya Dashami) to you and other friends in this Forum.

I have a real problem with devanagri. I sent emails to my friends in
devanagri for the Dashara festival and they got undecipherable script
letters although the devanagri script was OK in my copy of the mail sent . I
use Outlook Express for both my emails and my newsgroup. In the messages
sent to you the devnagri appeared as ????? in both my copy and the sent
copy. Perhaps it could be because I used the IE method when my default
browser was actually Mozilla Firefox. Currently, I have changed my default
browser to Netscape. I will try again after Dashara and will let you know
about the outcome. Hopefully, I will be able to send the Forum greetings in
Devanagri before Diwali (Dipawali). Thanks.

Binod.

absolutely required.
