Whereas the news is not a surprise given his frail health in recent years, it
nonetheless still hits you for six.
Mehmood's contribution to film comedy was quite unparalelled.
I still recall and marvel at performances in films like Kanoon, Main Sundar
Hoon and Padosan.
He was a true giant.

Losing two giants of the comic/comedy world of Hindi Films within 1 year is
indeed quite a sad event. Like Johnny Walker who passed away just under a year
ago, Mehmood too was a class apart when it came to comedy, and while their
styles differed, both provided great entertainment. Mehmood's greatness lay in
being not just a comic actor but even as a movie-maker. RDB and Rajesh Roshan
got their break, while Kishore got his second innings thanks to him in Padosan.
While many remember him as a comic actor, one movie in which his performance is
not as appreciated much is, IMO, "Kunwara Baap". Just as Johnny Walker makes you
weep with his cameo in "Anand", so does Mehmood here. For all those smiles and a
few tears, a heartfelt thank you,, and may your soul R.I.P
Ketan
Aameen.
And only the other day, someone had been enquiring on this
NG about Mehmood and if he is still alive.
Afzal
His pitting himself against Johny Walker in Pati Patni was nothing short of
boldness - because J. Walker outperformed him hands down. But those were
still the days of healthy compeition, I guess. Yet, one cannot take away
the contribution Mehmood made to the successes of films like Chhoti Bahen,
Saanjh Aur Savera, Beti Bete, etc. Though rememebred more for his romantic
roles with Shubha Khote in many films, he played hero too in quite a few,
like Lambe Haath, First Love - films that had pleasant music. His
recitation of the "ghost" story to Om Prakash in Pyaar Kiye Jaa is simply
unforgettable.
He got a much noticeable break in C.I.D., but was a regular in many earlier
films, too, in bit roles. In Shatranj, he goes to China and 'recites' a few
lines "huriyaa....hakkuu huriyaa...", which he incorporated later in his own
Kunwara Baap as a prelude in "..main huun ghodaa ye hai gaadii....".
R.I.P., Mehmood miyaan.

He began by bit roles in films like “Do Bigha Zameen” and “Pyaasa”, but
in those days he went unnoticed.

Shammi Kapoor: Mehmood was the best comedian of his time.
Shashi Kapoor: I have acted as a child artist along with
mehmood. I am shocked (on the news of his death).
Amitabh Bachchan: Mehmood was such an actor that the script
of film was written keeping him in mind.
Sunil Dutt: Mehmood was not only a comedian but was a
complete actor.
Asha Parekh: Mehmood's sense was humour was wonderful.
Lata Mangeshkar: Mehmood was such a great actor, singer and
dancer that it is difficult to fill up the void he has left.
S Jaipal Reddy(?): Mehmood's contribution to the cinema will
always be remembered.
Y S Rajshekhar Reddy(?): There was no other comedian more
entertaining than Mehmood.
Mulayam Singh Yadav: Mehmood launched a new era in hindi
film world with his original comedy acting talent.
--------------------
Usman Ali, Brother of Mehmood, said that he died peacefully
in his sleep. He was 72 and was born in Bombay in 1932. He
had acted in some 300 films.
His father Mumtaz Ali was a well known dancer and actor in
films. He (the father?) was the hero of Devika Rani in the
film "Jiivan Prabhat".
Mehmood had begun his career with Naastik in 1954. He acted
as the villain in Gurudutt's C.I.D. He got filmfare award
for best supporting actor for Dil Teraa Diiwaanaa in 1962.
He had acted and directed Ku.Nwaaraa Baap (1974). He had
produced 3 films and directed 5 films. Dushman Duniya Ka was
the last film directed by him. In it Shahrukh Khan had made
a guest appearance.
His son Lucky Ali is a famous singer in his own right.
Some of his films are
- Johar Mehmood in Goa
- Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong
- Sabase ba.Daa Rupayyaa
- Sasuraal
- Pa.Dosan
- Aa.nkhe.n
- Bhuut Ba.ngalaa
----------------
When I think of Mehmood, the film that come to my mind is
Gumnaam.
The peculiar way his staged his entry in that film.
It was a horror film. A dozen or so people got stranded on
an island and were getting killed one by one. A killer was
loose on the island.
then in a scene, so many ghostly sort of things occur and
that dead body or ghost fully covered in white chaddar rises
straight up, all amidst the most horrifying sounds of all
sorts, and then he comes out of that chaddar to let us know
that it was Mehmood.
The switch from that horrifying atmosphere to the sudden
feel of relief and comedy just by looking at the peculiar
face of Mehmood was unforgettable. That is what etched the
scene in my mind.
And, then there was kunwaaraa baap, having an entire
spectrum of emotions, rather melodrama that is possible in a
film. The song, saj rahii galii terii ammaa, was probably
the first one in which I had seen hinjaraas on screen, that
too in such a prominent "role". The way hinjaraas nag and
chase Mehmood and then he reveals the story of "bin maa.n
kaa bachchaa kahaa.N se aayaa bolo naa", and he recounts
entire sequence of events amidst those "haa.n jii" refrains
of hinjaraa, it was all so hillarious and involving.
-------------
It brings a question about Rajesh Roshan.
How come Mehmood introduced him? Was there any story in it?
Was mehmood close to Rakesh roshan or dad roshan?
mehmood always chose a safe and popular MD like RDB, why
would he risk launching a new unheard off MD?
But the music of the film was superb, catering to entire
range of emotions. Then came Julie has he was a name.
Rajesh then switched to mostly prose recital sort of
compositions for more than one decade. And I am not able to
recall any humourous song by Rajesh Roshan, after saj rahii
galii terii ammaa.

I am surprised that you asked such a question.
RDB was practically unknown (except to the industry-
folks) when Mehmood asked him to compose music for his
first production venture. And again he had RDB for
"Bhoot Bungla", which was a very off-the-beaten-track
movie.

This is incredible... Mehmood a great singer ????????
Lata Mangeshkar must have gone senile..
You are right.
I seem to have forgotten that he himself had introduced RDB
also. dad DB's angle was recently mentioned in NG.
How did he come across Rajesh Roshan? and dad Roshan angle
here also?
