It is really pathetic that there is even a discussion on
the alleged Sur(notes) problem of Asha's legendary voice.
Why not enjoy the many great songs this lady has recorded
over the years and talk of all the sweet ones instead of
wasting precious time now debating her sur problems.
Just go and get all those HMV releases of Asha and listen
and enjoy.Even at 63 Asha pulls those notes in the solo
in English Babu(the Qawalli song Kaise TUjse)hear the end of
this song and then accept that even now Asha can pull notes
as no one can.Did anyone hear her song from Phool Aur Patthar,
Diya Na Bujha?

Regarding Asha and sur...

Just wanted to mention that I watched "Mere sanam" yesterday and went
mad with the song "Jaiye aap kahaN jayeNge". Had to rewind and watch
( opps - listen ) it three times.

BTW, what an awesome music OPN gave for this movie.

Movie : Mere sanam
*ing : Biswajeet, Asha Parekh, Mumtaz, Pran
Lyrics : Majrooh
Music : OPN
Singers : Rafi, Asha

Initially I did not know that all these songs belonged to the same
movie. As the movie progressed, my surprize and delight kept reaching
unexpected heights. And in the end I thought that "paisa vasool ho gaya".

Songs in the order of appearance :

1. Pukaarta chala hooN maiN.....
(aahaha mazaa aa gaya - I love Rafi)
[ For those who cared some time back - it was a jeep ]
2. Humdum mere man bhi jaao
(ye bhi bura nahiN hai)
3. Hue haiN tum pe aashiq hum
(kya mastibhara "cool" gana hai)
4. Roka kai baar maine dil ki umang ko
(masti baDh rahi hai - and Rafi rules !!)
5. Jaaiye aap kahaN jayeNge
(oops- what a pitch !! - Asha must have won FF for it!?! )
6. Ye hai reshmi julfoN ka andhera na Ghabraaiye
(beautiiiiiiiiful - song as well as Mumtaz)
7. TukDE haiN mere dil ke
(why have a sad song in middle of all this masti !!)
8. HaaNji haaNji haaNji are haaNji baba
( thank God - otherwise I would have cloyingly believed
music __starts__ and __ends__ with "Mere sanam")

Can't say more - "Jaaiye aap kahaN jayeNge" gaate-gungunate hue gala
kharab ho gaya hai :-(

On a personal note, I like the Rafi-Asha duet "ham ne to dil ko aap ke
kadamoN pe rakh diya, is dil ka kya karenge ye ab aap sochiye......." from
this movie a lot which is missing from the above list. I learnt this song
from my guru who accompanied me with the tabla.

Not surprised, if you have been trying to keep up with Asha, :-)...it
must be especially difficult for you guys with gruff voices, :-)..it is
true though, all the songs are very good. Ashaji sang `yeh hai reshmi
zulfoN ka ondhera na ghabraiye' in the Houston concert. She sounded the
same as the tape I have, even after all these years.

I have not seen the movie, and perhaps they got rid of my favourite
Asha-Rafi duet. It is a favourite, not simply from this movie, but
from among a host of OP's compositions:

Humne To Dil Ko Aap Ke Kadmon Pe Rakh Diyaa
Is Dil Kaa Kyaa Karenge, Ye Ab Aap Sochiye

.. a worthwhile addition to any OP collection - and you do not have to
be a fanatic to like this song. It represents a sub-genre of his music
that is not terribly well represented in his work. Others that come to
mind are (and I like them too):

1. Aap Se Maine Meri Jaan Mohabbat Ki Hai (YE RAAT PHIR NA AAYEGI)
2. Phir Milogi Kabhi, Is Baat Kaa Vaada Kar Lo (YE RAAT PHIR.....)

and very few others.

One could almost dedicate a chapter to the Asha-Rafi duet compositions of
Omkar Prasad Nayyar.

For some more mindless trivia, "Jaaiye Aap..." topped the lesser Binaca-16
in 1964. Have no idea how they conduct this program any more (if they do),
but up until the mid-'70s, it was a 2-day and hence a 2-week affair covering
a total of 32 songs, sometimes more - there was a reason for the "more" bit.

I am not absolutely sure, but MERE SANAM may have been the last time Majrooh
teamed up with OP. Somehow, it was always possible to tell the special extra
quality of this combo. With the end of that partnership, OP's output dropped
a couple of notches. He would never again equal the peformance of PHIR WOHI
DIL LAAYA HOON, MRS. 420, HUM SAB CHOR HAIN, MUJRIM, TUMSA NAHIN DEKHA (?, may
have had a Sahir song or two), the whole Guru Dutt series etc.

The Asha-Rafi duet lived on well beyond the Majrooh-OP years. The last I
can recall is from the 1973 timeframe, also around the time Asha decided to
move on to things other than OP's music.

cheers
vish

There was yet another song in Mere Sanam which was taken out before the
release - the movie had become too long - you may remember it though

Hamne to dil ko aap ke kadmon pe rakh diya
Is dil ka kya kare yeh ab aap sochiye...

sung by Asha and Rafi.

Heard this song for the first time about two weeks ago, have not been
able to stop humming it since then - I LOVE the way Rafi suddenly opens
up for that line "Humse Ik Aur Mulaaqaat Ka Waada Karlo"

Though I like OPN, I have not been able to convince myself of TREMENDOUS
variety in his songs - this one was nice and refreshing, though it
reminded me a bit of "aanchal Men saja lena Kaliyaan", another good OPN
number.

That makes me wonder even more why OPN would so much good music in just
one movie...

I do not know why they wouldn't have this song in the video cassette.
Maybe because there were other 8 songs already, but then there were
1 or 2 better candidates for deletion. Can anybody tell when this song
appears in the movie ? Or is it a case where the song is only on the
audio casssette and nowhere to be seen in the movie ?

As I said, I feel "Mere Sanam" itself makes one chapter :)

What they used to do is to play top 16 songs on last Wednesday and 17
to 32 - ranked songs on second-last Wednesday of the year. In that case,
do you mean it was ranked 17th that year ? That doesn't sound well for
Binaka's credibility :)

Hello all!

Talking about Rafi 'opening up' ... I really liked the way Rafi opened up
in the 'antraa' of 'Badi der bhayee' in 'Basant Bahar' ... that was absolutely
scintillating! ... Can't seem stop hummming the song!! ... But the best
performance, IMO, in 'Basant Bahar' was definitely Pt.Bhimsen's rendition of
'Ketaki gulab juhi'!!! His 'gamak-taans' still leave my vocal chords
'trembling' with 'gamak' ...and yet... not enough 'guts' :-) to try all of them
out for fear of 'losing the sur'!

..Manna's rendition was good too!

take care,

Anand

Foot-in-the-mouth fever attacks me again!!

Should it be Haaji baba? Frankly I have no reason to believe that it should
be Haaji baba especially in a cabaret like situation. The only supporting
evidence that I can garner, is Rafi's hi-pitch rendition of "Haaji baba" {
just before the music goes 'dhen-dhen-dhaaaaand' :) } right smack in the
middle.

One always wonders at the luck of such non-performers. BB and PradeepK used
to star opposite Madhubala and get Rafi for the songs!! RajendraK with all
those 60s beauties and same goes for Bissoo!! Life is truly unfair!! *sigh*

That middle alaap in which Asha comes down {And AshaP becomes horizontal
while still standing, a feat that I had believed medically impossible!!}
Sweet dreams are made of these!! {And I am NOT talking about AshaP :)}

Later,
Ikram.
