Thinking about Pakeezah and Mughal-e-Azam, I was amazed by
several parallels.

1. In Pakeezah, the head of the family, played by Sapru was
a replica of all-powerful, all-controlling, extremely
conservative "ye shaadii nahii.n ho sakatii" Akbar
(Pritviraj Kapoor) of MEA.

2. In Pakeezah, Rajkumar was a replica of rebel Dilip Kumar
(Saleem) of MEA, both opting for love against the wishes of
family. (Rajkumar went a little off-line in pakeezah though
he had compelling reasons for doing that)

3. Meena Kumari played a dancer like Madhubala (Anarkali).

4. Both movies are set in traditional muslim cuture. This
culture was quite different from those dozens of feel-good
nawaabii-love movies. in Pakeezah, one feels the imapact of
a muslim family culture in the few moments when Ashok Kumar
takes Meena Kumari to his house, something that several
nawaabii movie could not show in three hours.

4. Both stories span some 18-20 years. In Pakeezah, daughter
Meena Kumari is born and grows. In MEA, Dilip Kumar is born
and grows.

5. Though the story of Pakeezah was set in current times,
the exact era was not mentioned in the film. The timing need
to be guessed from Rajkumar being a forest officer, etc.,
which is possible in British India or in post-independence
India. Train was there, thus the movie sure was after some
1850 when first train plied between Bombay and Thane.

Could someone guess a more narrow time-span of pakeezah.

But for these things, the pakeezah story could as well have
been set in mughal era.

6. All those kotha culture of pakeezah, especially the ones
after Veena takes young Meena Kumari to a different place
where Nadira is there, could as well have been in the
palaces of MEA. All that chuhalbaazii of Meena Kumari's
friends in pakeezah around "najariyaa kii maarii" was like
the ones around "terii mahafil me.n qismat aazamaa ke" of MEA.

7. Kamaal wanted to take Naushad as MD, and on naushad's
refusal and naushad's recommendations he opted for Ghulam
Mohammed.

8. After GM's demise, Naushad completed musical part of
pakeezah, composed BGM, and also composed some classical songs.

9. The climax situation in pakeezah having "aaj ham apanii
duaao.n kaa asar dekhe.nge" was having elements of the
situation of "pyaar kiyaa to Darna kyaa" of MEA. The
opponent was Akbar in MEA, and, in Pakeezah, Rajkumar
appears to be the main focus of the climax, but Sapru
promptly takes over.

10. Sapru trying to shoot Meena Kumar was similar to Akbar
imprisoning madhubala after the song.

11. Dilip Kumar declaring independence in MEA was similar to
Rajkumar leaving his house.
-----------

In view of these, I am wondering whether Kamal Amrohi tried
to present a Saleem-Anarkali of MEA in the form of
Rajkumar-Meenakumari in Pakeezah?

If so, Oh Holy God, how innovatively and successfully Kamaal
Amrohi did it. All praises to him.

I don't recall the source of the above where I heard/ read
that. Maybe some other member can fill up the blanks.

Kosh mentions Naushad as the composer of some songs e.g.
najariyaa kii maarii, and two other snippets.

Kosh also mentions Naushad for BGM.

Incidently, I always felt that "aaj ham apanii duaao.n kaa
asar" had all the stamps of Naushad instead of Ghulam M.
Kosh credits GM for the song, but I still wonder whether
Naushad had a strong influence in this song.

Very good job.

Incidentally, Mr. Amrohi was deeply involved with the production of
Mughal-e-
Azam. He was one of the 4 writers, who wrote the immortal dialogues
of MEA. No film prior to this, or for that matter even after that, had
such
great dialogues. For examples:

Badshah Roya Nahin Karte Sheikhoo

Koshish Nahin, Taameel Hogi

Kaneez Ko Khanjar Ki Befarmani
....................

Zindagi Mein Akbar Se ............ Ataah Kiya
Jayega

...............Kaneez Jalaluddin Mohammed Akbar
Ko Apna
Khoon Mauf Karti Hai

The Liquid Oxygen option does not work in all the circumstances.

I tried it in July, 2003 (see the link below or serach using key word:
Liquid Oxygen)), but the Target resurfaced few months later - courtesy
