Devika Rani, Shanta Apte, Jyoti Bai, and Baby Noorjehan. That's
according to Vish Krishnan's History of Hindi Film Music at

Noorjehan was an established star while Lata was still struggling to
make her presence felt in Indian films. She is also older than Lata by
a few years, "Baby" Noorjehan hardly seems appropriate. :-)
How about Zohrabai Ambalewali, Amirbai Karnataki? I would have thought
they would fall in this category too. I am sure there are quite a few
names to be added to this list.

Kanan Devi(bala) - she was surely the most popular singer in the
early 40's. Toofan mail, the song and the tune, sound so
fresh. Here are a few other names from the back of a 'Music
from New Theater's Era' CD:
Uma Shashi
Chhaya Devi(KK's aunt:)
Bela Mukherjee(Her Kashinath seems to have been a great hit in 1945)
Utpala Sen(not much prolific in the 40's I guess)
Indrani Roy (this singer has 6 songs alone on the CD -
no info on her tho')
Parul Ghosh
Bijan Ghosh Dastidar, acclaimed for her Ram-Dhun also precedes Lata.
Were any CD's or albums of her songs published?

Most certainly so! Apart from the ones already mentioned, Kanan Devi
(also referred to as Kanan Bala), Khursheed (or does she figure in the
"less-prolific" category?) Shamshad Begum, Rajkumari, Suraiyya
(incidentally, she used to be referred to as Baby S. I do not recall
having heard 'Baby Noorjehan' before!) etc.
Geeta Roy (her Hindi film debut was some time in 1946, a year before
Lata's) was already on the horizon when Lata first started singing in
Hindi films. Didn't Meena Kapoor also make her debut before Lata?
Then there were less prolific singers (such as Parul Ghosh, Sulochana
Kadam, Uma Shashi etc. How about Lalita Deolkar, Surinder Kaur? When
did they start out?)
Finally, there were people who were predominantly actors but also
used to sing (Devika Rani, Leela Chitnis etc.)
C
Juthika Ray
Rajkumari
Sarswati Rane (Bina madhur madhur kutchh bol)
SarasWati Devi (she also composed music)
Zohrabai Ambalawali
Khurshid
Kanan Devi (Ay chand chhup na jana. Check this one out. Very
very romantic rendition. Outstanding!)
Mubarak Begum
Uma Devi (Tun Tun, the comediene on-screen)
Suraiya
Rehmat Bano
Gauhar Sultan
Shamshad Begum
Parul Ghosh
Hamida Bano
Ameerbai Karnataki
Sitara of Kanpur
Naseem Akhtar
Manju
I am sure I missed some quite outstanding ones. Not
intentionally, though.

I have some doubts about two names you mentioned.

When did she start singing in films? My guess would have been
some time in the 50s.
> Uma Devi (Tun Tun, the comediene on-screen)
Her earliest song I know of is from Chandralekha. Was it made before
1947? Did she sing before that?
Perhaps one of the GeetKoshWallahs (or Hamraaz-ji himself!) can
shed light on this.

Hamraaz ji himself has made two posts so far on the topic, the second
one just a week ago!
Here it is.

In the month of March 1999, I posted a write-up on Uma Shashi
Vs. Uma Devi as under :
===============
Uma Shashi and Uma Devi are entirely two different personalities. Uma
Shashi, a singer-actress, sometimes quoted erroneously as Uma Devi
also, acted in 7-8 movies only, mostly (Puran Bhagat/1933,
Chandidas/34, Daku Mansoor/34, Dhoop Chhaon/35, Anath Ashram/37,
Dhartimata/38) produced by New Theatres. She also sang her songs in
all these movies. One of her hit duet with K.L.Saigal is 'Premnagar
mein basaungi ghar mein taj ke sab sansaar....' in CHANDIDAS(1934).
Another lovely triplet is 'Duniya rang rangeeli baba, duniya rang
rangeeli... from Dhartimata with Pankaj Mullick as taking lead,
followed by Uma Shashi (Her lines are : Kadam kadam per asha apnaa roop
anoop dikhati hai/ bigde kaam banaati hai, dheeraj ke geet sunaati hai/
Iska sur misri se meethaa, iski taan nasheeli baabaa, duniya rang
rangeeli...and ending with Saigal's pleasant lines 'Dukh ki nadiya
jeewan naiya, ashaa ke patwaar lage/ O naiya ke khene wale naiya teri
paar lage/ Paar basat hai desh sunehra, qismat chhail chhabili baba,
duniya rang rangeeli....' (I think I have recalled these lines from
memory correctly !) I liked her Dhoop Chhaon songs very much. I
believe, she is no more now as I could not find her in any Hindi movie
after 1938.
Uma Devi alias Tuntun, for whom Maestro Naushad Ali loudly
claims to have given her chance for the first time in his DARD (1947),
entered in film industry in 1946 and got her first break as singer in
the film WAAMIQ AZRAA (1946) by singing most probably - "Haaye do dil
milte milte reh gaye...". No doubt, after singing 'Afsana likh rahi
hoon, dil-e-beqaraar ka...' for DARD, she became instant hit. She
might have completed half-century in her singing career but became more
popular as lady comedian due to her bulky body. She is a chain smoker
and perhaps you are already aware, she lives in Mumbai !
==============
However, RMIMers in general and fans of New Theatres films in
particular may be thrilled to note that during the birth centenary
celebrations of Veteran Director-Producer Debaki Kumar Bose held at
Calcutta on 28th and 29th April 1999, audience were pleasantly
surprised when Uma Shashi, the famous singer-actress of the bye-gone
era was brought to the Stage by a film publicist Mr. Panchanan. She
was honoured alongwith other veterans related with the film world.
Selfishly, I would say that may Uma Shashi live long so that memories
of the bye-gone era are kept alive as far as possible.
