Utpala Sen passes away
======================

Statesman News Service
KOLKATA, May 13. - Melody queen Utpala Sen, known for the unique
ellifluousness of her voice passed away at the SSKM Hospital, at 12.05
a.m today. She had been suffering from cancer for the last five years.
She was 82, and is survived by her only son, Mr Asis Sen.

Her daughter-in-law Mrs Paromita Sen said that she had admitted at the
hospital on 5 May. Hundreds of her fans and noted singers Shibaji
Chattopadhyay, Utpalendu Chowdhury, Usha Uthup and Nirmala Mishra
thronged the Rabindra Sadan premises, where her body was taken this
afternoon, to pay their last tributes to her. Her last rites were
conducted at the Keoratala Burning Ghat late this evening.

Born on 12 March, 1924 in Dhaka, Sen first sang for the Dhaka radio in
1935. Her formal training began under the guidance of Hiranbala Debi,
her mother and a music maestro. Her voice was recorded for playback
singing in 1939 and she had been associated with the All India Radio
since 1940. After the demise of her first husband Benu Sen, she married
fellow singer, Satinath Mukhopadhyay in 1968.

Her first popular song to hit the shelves, was Ek hathe more pujar
thala, but fame came with the song, Shanti Dile Bhori in Mahishasur
Mardini, which is still aired on Mahalaya every year. Her presence in
celluloid music was first felt with songs in My Sister (1944) and Anjan
Garh (1947). She is specially remembered for her songs like Pakhi aaj
kon shure gaaye, Bhagyer chaka ta to ghurchhe and Jhikmik jonakir dip
jale shiore. Her numerous duets with Satinath Mukhopadhyay, Hemanta
Mukhopadhyay, Talat Mahmood, Manabendra Mukhopadhyay and Pankaj Kumar
Mullick, were hugely popular.

Though she had stopped giving public performances many years ago, the
recollections of her musical past and memories of Satinath Mukhopadhyay
were her daily companions at home. She gave her last press interview to
Dainik Statesman last month.

She appears to have sung about 15 songs in about 5 Hindi films (My
Sister to Zalzala). Soon you will find on my website her 2 songs from My
Sister.

One of her most memorable song is "prantorero gaan maar" composed by Salil
Chowdhury and recorded in 1953. Its an unforgettable symphonic composition
with beautiful lyrics (also by Salil). Utpala made one request to Salil -
he should never record it by any other singer in bengali as long as she was
alive.
Salil kept his promise.

The only other version " neend pari lori gaaye" was recorded by Lata in
"Chaardeewaari(1961)".
I still get goosepimples everytime I hear "prantorero gaan amaar".

May her soul rest in peace.

Great, look forward to those.

Also, as mentioned in the article, I could not recall/find any duets of
her with Talat Mahmood (checked Mr. Khalid's Website also).

I take this opportunity to translate this lovely song in Hindi as a
tribute to Utpala Sen and to the genius of Salil Choudhary (what a
lyrics!). Mistakes are mine. I have intentionally retained the word
"praantar" which perhaps means horizon here.

Thanks.
