Would someone be so kind as to attempt an English translation of the
below song, which I've copied over from the ITRANS database? I saw
JHANAK JHANAK PAYAL BAJE over the weekend, was thoroughly blown away
by the music, and thought that "Nain So Nain" in particular was one
of the most beautiful melodies of any kind I've ever heard. My Hindi/
Urdu isn't good enough to get more than a sense of what the lyrics mean.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I will post my translation directly to you (cause I am afraid I may not
do a pretty job - worthy of the newsgroup bandwidth).

But let me add one more stanza that I recall

rimjhim rimjhim jharno ki dhaar
dil ko lubhaye koyal pukar
jharno ki dharo me tera hi geet
gaaye koyal tera hi geet
saiyyaa ....

nain so nain nahi milao ...

A gem of a song! So soothing, so soft, so romantic!!
From Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje, I think.

The MD was Vasant Desai who remained unappreciated due to his exclusive
contract with V Shantaram. The song I liked best is a Meerabai bhajan
"Jo tum todo piya main nahin todun re --tori preet todi Krishna kaun sang
jodun . Many other MDs have set this to tune but Vasant Desai's treatment
remains the best IMHO.

Here is a roughish translation: the focus is on giving your Hindi a leg up,
for I am afraid I have no idea how to translate poetry. Has anyone seen
Theotonio's ghost around here?

eye so(n): to/with

or 'your looking at my face...'

'come, and love with love embellish:'

: >madhur milan gAvat Aj, gu_iyA.n

'meeting of hearts be sung in song, gui(n)yan..'

gui(n)yan: (female) friend/companion. roughly equivalent to 'sakhi'.

'the cloud-boat, the lightning-oars..' [NOT talking about the speed of
rowing!!]

Manish added:

: rimjhim rimjhim jharno ki dhaar

'the tinkling (or whatever) of the springs' streams'

: dil ko lubhaye koyal pukar

'the cuckoo's call bewitches the heart'

: jharno ki dharo me tera hi geet
"tera sangeet" ?

'it is your music in the springs' streams,'

: gaaye koyal tera hi geet

'your songs that the kuckoo sings'

: saiyyaa ....

: nain so nain nahi milao ...

Yes. Lata and Hemant. Vasant Desai's music. Features Sandhya opposite
the noted choreographer Gopi Kishan, I think. A film by V Shantaram.

Incidentally, what was Shantaram's film company called? Rajshree Films?

It was Rajkamal Films, or Rajkamal Kalamandir.

Incidentally, JHANAK JHANAK has the distinction of being India's first
technicolor production, I believe.

Thanks for the translation and notes. I'm beginning to think I could learn
the language much faster through songs than in any other way.

With gratitude,
