If any of you dont have the complete lyrics, never mind. Atleast
give me some idea of its meaning.

I posted this song a few months back. Here it goes again. (Surender Mohan
supplied the meanings of some crucial words and thanks go to him.) The
meanings on the right hand side are added _now_.

Since no one has yet tried, let me post the lyrics partially
for the starters.
Honestly, I am totally clueless about what exactly this song
means. So, there could be some ultimate spelling goofs.

I have a different meaning for this song (not as interesting as above!).
Let's see if I can justify it :-)
Muniyaa => Mainiyaa (a bird) [Mainaa is a very common bird in North Bihar,
where this folk song has supposedly originated]
Pinjara - Cage
So the meaning I have is :
The encaged bird (mainaa) has won the hearts of the passersby.
The rest of the song is an "attempt" to explain why some things are
dry (without "ras" (juice)). The reason is very simple! This bird goes
flying to all these shops (sweets, clothes, and "paan"), and takes all
the "ras" out from ("barfi", clothes, and "paan").
In the light of above, there is one minor correction in the song:

Also, halwai in the north is a person who makes all kind of
sweets (including "halwa"). That is the reason, the bird is
able to find "barfi" in his shop!

This is a folk song which, in the movie, is picturised on a group of
"gaadiwaans" (bullock cart operators) singing around a fire during a night halt."pinjare waali muniya" means exactly "the bird in the cage" and the whole song
describes its exploits. In a deeper sense the song might be interpreted to mean
the exploits of fickle "babes" who move about from one place to another, taking
advantage of the innocent lovelorn who are left holding the bag, so to speak. Ona still deeper level, one could always find great philosophical meaning in the
"now you see it, now you don't" nature of life itself. On delving further deep..... (I leave it to the true philosophers on the net!).

Just my two cents worth."Pinjare waali muniyaa" means "babe WITH the
cage" rather than babe in the cage. THAT would come out as `pinjare
mein muniyaa'.

सफ़र पे निकले हुए इंसान का गाना है तो यादें तो हैं गाने में | किसी आयातित घुमावदार जलेबी की बात नहीं होती, सीधी सादी, देसी बर्फी की मिठास है | कपड़ों की दुकान वाले बजाज का जिक्र है, पहले होते थे, अब के शहरों में बजाज भी कहीं खो गए हैं | जिस इलाके का गीत है, वहां पान का बड़ा महत्व होता है | वो भी खोता जा रहा है | अब बड़े काम का कोई बीड़ा नहीं उठाता, पान का थाल आने पर भोज की समाप्ति भी नहीं समझी जाती | साठ के दशक की मशहूर फिल्म थी “तीसरी कसम” जिसका ये गाना है | उस दौर में भी ये गाना नोस्टालजिया जगा देता होगा |
गाने में सिर्फ एक वाक्य है जो दोहराया जाता है : “पिंजड़े वाली मुनिया” | “तीसरी कसम” एक गाड़ीवान की कहानी है जो एक नाचने-गानेवाली, नौटंकी वाली, या सीधा कहें तो तवायफ को गावं के किसी मेले तक ले जा रहा है | स्टेशन से जाने और ले कर आने के रास्ते में उस से कई गलतियाँ होती हैं | सीधा सा कम बोझ सर पर लेने वाला गाड़ीवान है, हर गलती से वो सीखता जाता है | शिकायतें नहीं पालता | गाने का “चलत मुसाफ़िर” वो गाड़ीवान है जो सफ़र पर होता है |
उसे मोहने वाली “पिंजड़े वाली मुनिया”, वो तवायफ है जिसका किरदार वाहिदा रहमान निभा रही हैं | मुनिया गाने वाली चिड़िया होती है, लेकिन पिंजड़े में है, तो सबको मोहेगी, मगर गाएगी तो गाना सिर्फ मालिक के हुक्म पे होगा | सबके लिए नहीं | सीधा सादा सा गाड़ीवान पूरे रास्ते अपनी सरलता से तवायफ को अचरज में डाले होता है | उसकी आखरी यानि तीसरी कसम थी कि अगली बार कभी किसी नाचने वाली को अपनी गाड़ी में नहीं बिठाएगा |
