"churaa liyaa hai tumane" (Vijay Arora) had to be among the top in this
category had it not been Zeenat doing the Asha part. But then, we have
this "chalate chalate mere ye giit yaad rakhanaa" picturised on some
Vishal. Any other song to beat this?

It was long time ago, when few members 'Bahao Bade Bade Aansoo'
on watching on-screen performace for the song:

Teri Galiyon Mein Na Rakhenge Kadam, Aaj Ke Baad

The hankies are still damp.

The song by itself is quite good

Sudhir

p.s.: Tariq, if I remember it correctly, is nephew of Nasir Husain.
(or
alternatively, one can say, was a 'Ghar Ki Murgi'

Well, for the films mentioned, it would be appropriate to call him
"ghar kii daal" who has been treated "murgii baraabar".

How about one of the most beautiful song sung by Asha "Aage bhi jaane
na tu" (Waqt, music: Ravi) picturized on a complete no body.

Minoo Mumtaz (Mehmood's sister in real life, I think)
All songs of Parasmani
All songs of Aashiqui (who remembers them now, you would say, but they
were a big hit in the 1991)
"dikhaa_ii di_e yuu.N ki bekhud kiyaa" on Supriya Phatak
"aap yuu.N faasalo.n se guzarate rahe" on Madhuchanda (okay how many
people really remember this song other than people from this group.

Well, Vijay Arora was a quite popular hero in the mid 70's and acted in
popular films like: Jeevan Jyoti, Roti, 36 Ghante, Ek Mutthi Aasmaan,
Insaaf, Phagun, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Rakhi Aur Hathkadi, Sabse Bada Sukh
and Samadhi. But his career nose-dived sometime around 1978 or so. Was
good-looking as well. didn't he act also ina movie with Jaya Bhaduri?

For this thread, the blue ribbon should go to Joy Mukherji - not one,
but dozens of popular songs - and the runners up to Biswajit, or as one
RMIMer had written earlier, Shah Rukh Khan.

Happy Listenings.

If he is put in a zoo among the apes, the apes would go on strike,
demanding his removal from there. ;-)

Anyway, nepotism is rampant in the film industry. Real uglies (but sons
and daughters of industry's big shots) have tried to force themselves on
audiences. Randhir Kapoor, Naina Sahu, Tusshar Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor's
son are some examples.

Anita Guha (Sanjog), Minoo Mumtaz (Black Cat) and
Anita Guha, IIRC, (in Parasmani ) and some other names mentioned in the
thread were the leading actors/actresses in the films mentioned. These two
ladies were well know in those days.

How could you forget Kishan Kumar and "achha sillaa diyaa tuune" (the
popular (in its own class) song before Sonu got popular in a big way)!!!

There are so many down the years, one just loses track and rightly so.
Moreover, why bother.

Apologies for very late reply. Vijay Arora might have acted in a number
of films as you mentioned. But I disagree he was quite a popular hero.
At best he was a notch better than Vikrams and Hemant Birjes. He
could't carry the weight of a movie by himself.

just saw this song on mtv as part of the rajshri package - sona
kahe...vrishTi paDe from the movie paheli. the hero I could recognise
as the mute from khoon bhari maang a guy called satyajit. I do not know
who the girl is. prob the balika badhu girl? but that is a beautiful
song too. could feature in this thread.

I suppose the title is meant to mean "popular songs picturised on
actors not so popular then."
otherwise,
1. All the hit songs of the movies featuring new comers should fall
under this category. Would you take QSQT or Hero?
2.inclusion of Laxmi (Julie's song) is not justified. She was already
one of the very popular / leading actors in the South in all the four
languages. Perhaps, again the title is meant only for Hindi/ North
actors.
2. Big B was not very popular, even considered a flop, when movies like
Manzil, Benaam were released (Do Anjaane?). That he subsequently became
a superstar, a legend, a history is another thing.
3. Why not include the hero of Piya ka Ghar (which had such wonderful
songs like "yeh jeevan hai") who faded into oblivion in a short span?
4. There was a mention of "age bhi jaane"" in the thread. The song
could have been picturised on a non entity in filmdom. But its
popularity was not entirely due to the lyrical content or music. Please
remember the sequence is very pivotal to the ensuing climax and it was
Chopra's genius to feature all the characters (heroes, heroines,
villain, character actors) with everybody doing contributing the
situation or bringing out the character. It was a song that became
popular more to the situation.

It's more like how much do you visualise the person whom the song is
picturised on actually singing the song rather than the song being sung
by an anonymous person. You do associate QSQT songs with Amir and
"pyaar karane waale kabhii Darate nahii.n" immediately reminds one of
Jackie Shroff's face. So, no, to me they don't fall in the category.
But you'll hate to link "pyaar maa.ngaa hai tumhii se" to Sachin or
"maanaa ho tum behad hasii.n" to Shekhar Kapoor for instance. They
therefore belong to the category.

Benaam yes, but Manzil? Even though it was a low-key movie, it was made
when Big B was already a superstar. BTW, the only popular song of
Benaam (yaaraa o yaaraa) was picturised on (+sung by) Chanchal. And he
was popular in his own genre.

You are right in that, that he never could carry a film on his
shoulders alone. But if I remember right, the girls in the 70's, as far
as I can remember form my early childhood, were quite enamoured by him.

To exaggerate a bit: Madhubala also had very few hits, but she was
popular all the same. Same can be said of Aishwarya Rai.
So popular, yes! hits no!

As it is, it is very difficult to say what and who is popular. take for
e.g. Ameeta from Dekh kabira roya, Tumsa nahin dekha and Gunj uthi
shehnai. I remember her due to her above movies, but in the late 60's
she was relegated to play roles opposite Rajendranath in Around the
World for e.g. For me I would have said she is popular, because I knew
her and because of the songs from these famous movies. But something
went wrong with her career and she is not really known today. Amita
Guha: I hardly knew her except from the song "Wo bhuli dastaan". But
she played many roles in mythological films and thus might have been
popular in certain segments of the film-going society.

Complicated, isn't it?

Your logic is absolutely alright, Abhijit.
Going by the same, doesnt the song "bhulgaya sub kuch" evoke images of
Laxmi? Atleast to me it does, although I have never seen the movie but
in parts. The song's popularity was atleast partly due to the sequences
which, for those days, considered kinda hot.
Your info on Manzil is eye opener for me. Perhaps, it was under
production for a very long time. Except the sequence of "rim jim gire
saawan" where Moushmi had to walk over the parapat to suit the tall
hero, it could well (and perhaps better) played by a hero like Amol
