Is it true that Salilda was once booked on a murder charge? He was signed up
for Anand shortly after he spent about a year in jail. This according to a
local (NJ/NY) magazine called "TV and film guide", dated January 18th-31st.
Could somebody shed more light on this?

A google search on RMIM about this topic didn't turn up anything.

Thanks,

A

I don't know about Salil. But around 1990, the weekly
SUNDAY featured a headline about an MD being charged
with murder. I checked the story and whom should it concern
but Sajjad! I thought I had mentioned the Sajjad story before
on rmim but a google search brought up nothing.

His daughter-in-law had died in Kolkata. It looks
looks as if Sajjad was in the city. I don't know whether he
had moved there for some years. I do know he was based
in good old Mumbai in 1995, the year he died.

The report said the dead woman's body was disposed off
in haste to prevent post-mortem. Foul play was suspected.
The woman's husband (Sajjad's son) was charged. Sajjad
was also accused.

I followed SUNDAY's issues faithfully for few months after
the story first appeared. But there was no follow-up. I asked
some veterans in Mumbai about it. But they didn't even know
that Sajjad had been charged with murder. Ambarish Mishra
of Times of India and Maharashtra Times has written a long
article on Sajjad in his Marathi book : 'shubhra kaahii jiiv-gheNe'.
I had a long telephonic talk with Ambarish last year. We could
not meet in person. I had planned to ask him about the story.
But in the flow of conversation, I forgot about it completely.
Isaak Muzaawar Sahab, the veteran journalist who has forgotten
more about the industry than most of us will ever know, had
not heard about the story at all. Nor did anyone else with whom
I broached the topic.

The only person I know who was accused of murder was the good old 'jaanii' Raj
Kumar, who was a police (sub?)/inspector before joining the films. After the
accusations, he quit his job and ....the rest is history.

Let mepost a one question quiz on our 'jaanii' baabuu.

Name the film in which he appeared as a "guest star", for only one song item,
acting as a street singer, like Shyam in CID's 'leke pehlaa pehla pyaar...".

Please DO post your answers on RMIM.

Happy listenings.

I haven't seen this film, so I don't know.

But if Raj Kumar was in this film only for a "street" song, it would make it a
second film like that.

I invite those who have seen the film to comment.

Happy listenings.

Since no further responses/guesses have been posted on RMIM in the last
couple of weeks, here is the answer to the one question quiz I posted:

The film was Bade Sarkar, 1957, in which Raj Kumar plays the Harmonium in
the street song "jab ham tum donon raazii to kyaa karegaa qaazii...". The
lady dancing and singing the Asha Bhosle number was Sheela Vaz, who,
interestingly, was also the one in the C.I.D. song "leke pehlaa pehlaa
pyaar...". Music for this film was also by O.P. Nayyar, for lyrics penned
by Sahir.

Raj Kumar just plays the harmonium, and his role was just that song long.
