I wonder if they will create a shopping mall in its place.

[Btw, I've heard that the multiplex in Forum, Koramangala is very good
(albeit v expensive). Dinner while you're watching a film?]

Thanks for the link.

Although Plaza was strategically located on MG Road, one of the
problems of watching movies there was that it was impossible to get a
parking spot (even for 2-wheelers) close to the theater, esp. on
weekends. So, I wonder whether a shopping mall would be feasible unless
they build an adjacent parking structure.

Is this a sort of first occurrence in Bangalore ?

Probably the earliest example of a venerable Cinema House
giving place to a shopping mall is (or rather was)
Broadway near Dadar T.T. That is where "Baiju Bawra" had
its premiere. And the footpath opposite the theatre was
where Naushad spent many nights after coming to Bombay.

Agreed. It was a nightmare. Also, the theatre was run down in the 90s
(very unlike the fashionable place in the 70s) and I did not like to go
there.

Afzalji -
Not at all. Many theatres have closed down, but this theatre was a
landmark - a bit like Eros or Regal (in Mumbai) closing down.

http://www.livejournal.com/users/jace/369519.html

has some comments on other theatre closures in Bangalore.

Incidentally, since you mentioned Dadar TT, not only did it bring back
memories of early morning torture sessions at the hands of the profs at
Agrawal classes, but also the pleasant memories of Damodar's kachoris.
[Not to mention the awful tv jingle "Babubhai Jagjivandas"]
For a long time, I did not know what TT meant until someone told me
that it stood for Tram Terminus.

OT: For those interested in very funny anecdotes relating to Agarwal
classes check out old posts at soc.culture.indian (circa 1990-92)

You'll laugh your heart out if you are an Agroo-ite.

I saw Ram Aur Shyam in a then-brand-new-shining theater on Kempegowda
(?) Road in 1967 or 1968.

QUIZ: Name the theater.

By a strange coincidence, I saw its Tamil original
"Enga Veettu Pillai" in a Bangalore theatre in early 67.

I had seen a couple of Kannada films too, one of them
being "Belli Moda". But, now I don't remember the film
at all.

I think the theatre may be Sagar (it usually has hindi movies) or
States (not existent any more)

My first movie in Plaza theatre was 'Grease 2' in 1984.

Unfortunately I do not remember too much. I do remember that a statue of
KG was not too far from the theater. I do remember that I remarked
something about the name of the theater to my friends. Sangam is the
most likely name. I will have to get in touch with one of my MSc friends
with whom I went on the Grand South India tour. Wish I could go back in
time!
