RJGK 52: tere sur aur mere geet

This is the answers post. Also has RMIMers' (YOUR!)
comments on songs. Results and comments on the quiz
will follow in a subsequent post. ("Soon"!)

Along with each answer, I give two numbers. They are
the number of entries that gave the correct answer using
short and long clues, respectively.

Where possible I have also indicated availabiliy on
reasonably easily available recordings. A few others are
available through the video copy of the film. In a couple
of cases I am not aware of any source short of obtaining
them from collectors. Do follow up if you know of a source.

baDaa kam_zor hai aadami
abhi laakho.n hai.n is me.n kami
par tu jo kha.Daa
hai dayaalu baDaa
teri kirpaa se dharati thami

diyaa tu ne hame.n jab janam
tu hi jhelegaa ham sab ke gham

I know all these lines are an overkill. I think almost
any half-line of this song would be enough to recognize
the song. It is a pleasure to write and read and observe
and listen. Notice the double-line radeef and kaafiyaa.
Also notice the seamless tapestry Bharat Vyas creates
using .... whatever you want to call the words, Hindi and
Urdu, Sanskrit/Desi and Persian/Arabic, Hindu and Muslim
words.

Short clue:
baDaa kam_zor hai aadami
abhi laakho.n hai.n is me.n kami

Song: ey maalik tere bande ham
Film: Do Ankhen Barah Hath ('57)
Singer(s): Tandem: Lata solo/Male chorus (perhaps with Shantaram)
Music: Vasant Desai

(23,2)

The song is widely available. The chorus version has three
stanzas in recordings and in film. The Lata version exists
in two forms, each with two stanzas. Until recently, most
recordings did not have this stanza. The film version has
this stanza. The CD release with 'Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje'
carries the film version.

Hema: easy easy easy! :)

Rohini: Incidentally the Bharat Scouts and Guides sing a version
of this song (same tune but some of the words are changed to suit
the movement) that goes "Baden Powell tere bandhe hum".

Vandana Malkauns: Somehow I like the lesser known version of this song.

Know any other song addressed to a horse, that too
by name? Catchy ghoDaa beat (not to be confused with
ghoDaa gaadi beat!) by SN Tripathi. I like the
arresting phrase "bijali kaa baan" that occurs in
the line after the next stanza

chetak mahaan hai tu, bijali ka baan hai tu

Bharat Vyas himself seems to have liked it a lot; he
had also used it in 'Stree' in the "viraha" version of
a song. You don't have to deal with it, but you do have
to deal with the "milan" version later in the quiz!

Short clue:
chetak mahaan hai tu, bijali ka baan hai tu

Song: o pavan veg se uDanevaale ghoDe
Film: Jai Chittod ('61)
Singer(s): Lata
Music: SN Tripathi

(17,7)

Haven't seen a regular recording. The film is not
available on video either. The lyrics are available
in ISB, though! Do post a follow-up if you know of
a cassette/CD release that has this song.

Arunabha: True, I cannot think of any other song in
which a horse is addressed :) Is that the sole reason
for its inclusion in the quiz ? I much prefer the other
song that I have heard from this film, "saa.Njh ho gayii
prabhu" [...Why didn't you include that in the quiz?...]
The horse song sort of seems tired and drawn out to me.

Preeti: I vaguely remember a song from the seventies that
went something like
raju chal raju, apni masti mein tu
koi jiye ya mare...
with the raju in question being a horse.

Anand: I can think of one song addressed to a horse. It is
from Pramod Chakravorty's "Azaad" (Dharmendra & Hema Malini).
The song is "Raju, chal raju, apni masti mein tu......" sung
by Kishore Kumar and set to tune by RD. Quite an enjoyable
tune though the lyrics are pedestrian.

Nita: The film is Jai Chittor, right? I remember hearing this
song on Vividh Bharati. :-)

Surajit: I have no idea how I missed this in the short version!
It's a dead giveaway.

Lata: saj singaar ritu aayi basanti
Rafi: jaise naar koi ho rasavanti

Both: Daari Daari kaliyo.n ko titaliyaa.n choome
phool phool pankhaDiyaa.n khole
amrit ghole
aaa a aaa

Ever since Kalidas at least, poets have liked writing
songs to celebrate the cycle of seasons. And given the
easy mapping that Indian classical music allows with the
cycle of seasons, music directors are also too happy to
compose raagamaalas for them. I can recall two great
raagamaalas penned by Bharat Vyas. The one from 'Kavi
Kalidas' was mentioned in the writeup on Bharat Vyas and
a different song is used in the quiz to represent that
soundtrack. So, here is the other one. Perhaps the most
loved raagamaala in the annals of Indian light-classical
music. The tune comes from music director Adi Narayana
Rao's own Telugu original.

Short clue:
saj singaar ritu aayi basanti
jaise naar koi ho rasavanti

Song: kuhu kuhu bole koyaliyaa
Film: Surarna Sundari ('58)
Singer(s): Lata, Rafi
Music: Adi Narayana Rao

(20,3)

Widely available (e.g., Rafi-Lata duets compilations).
But, almost all of them omit the last stanza (kaahe ghaTaa
me.n bijali chamake). I am told that the CD release has
the complete song.

Hema: wonderful lyrics!

Ketan: Forgot the movie temporarily.

Surajit: Is the fact that this song also showed up in your
earlier RJGK just a coincidence, or is there a pattern
I'm missing here?

-----------------------------------------------
4

ek pal hai ha.Nsanaa, ek pal hai ronaa
kaisaa hai jeevan ka khelaa
ek pal hai milanaa, ek pal bichhaDanaa
duniyaa hai do din ka melaa

Whatever one says about the song will be inadequate. So
let me just say that my only dilemma was: should I count the
song under Mukesh or under Lata?!

Short clue:
ye ghaDi na jaaye beet

Song: aa lauT ke aa jaa mere meet
Film: Rani Rupmati ('59)
Singer(s): Lata/Mukesh tandem
Music: SN Tripathi

(23,1)

Readily available as by-film cassette/CD and in Mukesh
and Lata compilations.

Surajit: What a lovely soundtrack....

Songs 5 through 9: Songs from more mainstream films

On and off in his career, Bharat Vyas wrote songs for
social films. In spite of the success of the music,
and often the films, for unfathomable rasons these
opportunities didn't multiply. A look at some of his
major successes in this subsection.
-----------------------------------------------
5

ye mad_maati raat ye ThanDi
Thandi havaa ke jhonke
tere binaa mere soone jigar me.n
birahaa ki agani khonkhe

jhilmil jhilmil taare damakate, jagamag hai jag saaraa

When I started work on this RJGK, I wasn't sure whether
the universe of Bharat Vyas and that of a major playback
singer had ever crossed! Turns out they had crossed at
a very early stage in their careers.

At the turn of half-century mark in the century, Bharat
Vyas had the good fortune of establishing close working
relations with perhaps the greatest music director of Hindi
films. The films ranged across genres, including social
and mythological films. The relation was cut short by the
untimely death of the music director.

If you are a true-blood RJGKer (Rjerk?), you don't need me
to tell you the name of the film!

Short clue:
jhilmil jhilmil taare damakate, jagamag hai jag saaraa

Song: jagamag jagamag karataa nikalaa
chand poonam ka pyara
Film: Rimjhim ('49)
Singer(s): Kishore
Music: Khemchand Prakash

(3,6)

You can hear the song on HMV's 4-cassette set,
Kishore: A Retrospect.

Arunabha: Lovely song. KK sounds tentative and
tender in his early voice. Very different from his
later 70's and 80's voice. I believe KK counts this
among his top-ten or so songs ?

Surajit: If this is correct, it's thanks purely to Snehal
and the giit kosh! I must be an untrue-blood Rjerk, because
I hadn't heard of the movie or the song before this.

Interesting answer(s):

na tum aaye, na neend aayi tumhari yaad hi aayi

Ashok --> Frequent! Perhaps people assumed that, by playback
singer not much featured in Bharat Vyas songs, Shamshad was
meant.

----------------------------------------------
6

more man me.n uThi hai umang re
o mera pha.Dake hai baayaa.n ang re

more man ki muraliyaa pe hole hole
sur khole khole
koi gaa rahaa hai

Madan Mohan got a flying start to his career by tuning
this song of Bharat Vyas. As far as I know, they did
not meet professionally again, after this film.

Note the wonderful use of a superstition in the stanza
(it is supposed to augur good things on that day for
a woman if her left eye or shoulder "flutters"; I am not
sure what word to use!) The opening lines use another
superstition. You want a hint? OK. Don't do the mistake
of focusing on koyal, swan, chakor, et al, and forgetting
lowly birds!

Short clue:
more man me.n uThi hai umang re
o mera pha.Dake hai baayaa.n ang re

Song: mori aTariyaa pe kaaga bole
Film: Aankhen ('50)
Singer(s): Meena Kapoor
Music: Madan Mohan

(15,7)

Available in Aankhen/Ada cassette and in the
Meena Kapoor compilation.

Snehal: Did MM ever work again with Bharat Vyas or he just
dumped him like he dumped Mukesh? For that matter did he
compose another song for Meena Kapoor ?

---------------------------------------------
7

aaj mere man ki baansuri bhi maun hai
nis ko DhoonDhate mere nayan vo kaun hai

raag hai wahi
raag hai wahi paraag hai wahi pavan

The only time Bharat Vyas got to work with Bimal Roy
led to a sensationally good soundtrack for an excellent
film. As bad luck would have it, the music director
(who was also a singer earlier) died soon after the
film.

Short clue:
raag hai wahi
raag hai wahi paraag hai wahi pavan
phir bhi kyo.n ... .

Song: chand hai wahi,
chand hai wahi sitaare hai.n wahi gagan
phir bhi kyo.n udaas hai, udaas mera man
Film: Parineeta ('53)
Singer(s): Geeta
Music: Aroon Kumar

(7,5)

Parineeta is available on cassette/CD.

Surajit: Sacrilegiously enough, I don't find the songs of
this movie particularly enchanting, except for this one.
What a lovely song.

Interesting answer(s):

chali radhe rani (sad)

dha.Dkan me.n tu hai samaayaa hua
khayaalo.n me.n tu hi tu chhaaya hua
duniyaa ke mele me.n laakho.n mile
magar tu hi tu dil ko bhaayaa hua

A superhit soundtrack. A superhit film. If the
world were rational, Bharat Vyas-Vasant Desai ought
to have been a highly sought-after combination. But
Rajendra Kumar seems to have been the sole beneficiary
from the success of the film.

Would I be right in presuming this to be the easiest
clue ever to crack? :)

Short clue:
duniyaa ke mele me.n laakho.n mile
magar tu hi tu dil ko bhaayaa hua

Song: tere sur aur mere geet
Film: Goonj Uthi Shehnai ('59)
Singer(s): Lata
Music: Vasant Desai

(20,3)

Widely available in Lata compilations. Look for
single-film cassette by HMV for the brief sad version.

Arunabha: Yes, I guess this is the easiest one :)

Surajit: What exactly is the point of including this as a clue?

--------------------------------------------

"geet_kaar hai.n Bharat Vyas, aur sangeet_kaar hai.n
Rahul Dev Burman". Doesn't it have a funny ring to it?
Well, perhaps no more than when in 1955 Pradeep and C.
Ramchandra came together for 'Nastik.'

Gulzar recycled the idea in the mukhaDaa later for a
famous "set of songs" in 'Rudali.'

Short clue: Had the extra words
pal pal, ho pal pal

Song: samay tu dheere dheere chal
Film: Karm ('77)
Singer(s): Kishore, Asha
Music: RD Burman
Lyricist!: Rajkavi Indrajit Tulsi

(11,5)

While "dheee dheeere chal" is a fast-paced happy song,
there is a tandem duet by the same singers which is
a slow-paced song in a sombre mood: samay to jaldi jaldi
chal.

This song (or these songs) are not by Bharat Vyas but by
Rajkavi Inderjit Singh Tulsi, much better known for his
poetry in Punjabi. I had jotted down the lyrics from the
video of the film. After posting the quiz, I came to know
that 'Karm' is available on CD. Thanks to Ketan, Vijay,
Surajit, and Vish for pointing out the error.

The Jains: Is it indeed Bharat Vyas? A pleasant surprise
for us.

Sami: Lovely song!

Abhay: I have seen this movie and can remember the convoluted
story, but just can't remember the film name.

Vijay: The poet in this case goes one better than Gulzar by
penning a tandem "samay tu jaldi jaldi chal"

========================================

svapn bachpan ke adhoore
ho rahe hai.n aaj poore
phir na jaane kab aayenge ye sunehre pal

A similar poetic idea as above here in this song
from a 1960 film about one of the most famed murderers
in history.

Might become a sher if you string out the first two
lines! Bharat Vyas and Anil Biswas had met earlier
for one song in 'Badi Bahu'. This full-fledged reunion
gave rise to many gems, such as "buddhham sharaNam
gachchhaami", "aayi aayi basanti belaa", and a lovely
rendering of a Ravindra Sangeet song "more chanchal nainaa,
madhu ras ke bhare" by Meena Kapoor. The selection here
is very endearingly sung in a maasoom/frail voice by
Arti Mukherjee.

Short clue: Had the extra phrase
o chandaa

Song: dheere dheere Dhal re chandaa
Film: Angulimal ('60)
Singer(s): Arti Mukherjee
Music: Anil Biswas

(5,5)

Avaialable in the Anil Biswas CD.

Surajit: Delectable song. But on my CD it sounds as though
Aarti's voice cracks just a trifle on the very last, drawn
out "cha.ndaa ..." Do you hear it too?

--------------------------------------------
11

praNay geet ki pratham pankti ho
yaa manu ki pehali santaan
nav yauvan ki pratham drishhTi ho
nayano.n ki pehali pehachaan

The answer expected here would be a very prosaic
matter of fact question, if pulled out of the context.
But what a song it turned out to be!

Song: kaun ho tum kaun ho
Film: Stree ('61)
Singer(s): Mahendra Kapoor
Music: C. Ramchandra

(9,8)

Available on Sehra/Stree cassette/CD.

Arunabha: You should have written Mahendra Kapoor's
lines in upper caps :)

Hema: Although one shouldn't mention who cracked
which clues in a team entry, I am dying to declare
that Arunabha got this one. I could never have, it
doesn't even sound like an existing valid song to me! :-)

Surajit: There's nothing particularly prosaic about the
question. Philosophers have been wrestling with it for ages,
and the last time I checked they haven't come up with a
definitive answer.

Rohini's answer:
Nav madira jaisi anchakhi, nav madira
jaisi angiindha muurti

Ashok --> This is the prelude. I am glad I saw the
film. Otherwise, I would have embarrassed myself by
marking a correct answer as wrong!

Interesting answer(s):

o nirdayi priyatam

----------------------------------------
12

ham tumhe.n chaahe, tum nahi.n chaaho
aisa kabhi naa ho sakataa
pitaa apane baalak se bichha.D ke
sukh se kabhi naa so sakataa

One of the most spectacular successes, the song
hit the top of Binaca Geetaala.

A mythological film, but had interesting features.
Has a reasonably serious discussion of the issue of
existence of god, as brought out by another hit song
from the film: "tu hai yaa nahi.n bhagavaan."

Song: zaraa saamane tu aao chhaliye
Film: Janam Janam Ke Phere ('57)
Singer(s): Lata, Rafi
Music: SN Tripathi

(13,5)

Haven't seen a regular recording. Do post if you know
any CD/cassette that has it.

Abhay: I must have seen this song on "Chhayageet" in b&w
DD days, but again, can't remember the name of the film.

Surajit: I haven't heard this song in something like
fifteen years. Not that I'm complaining.

---------------------------------------
13

madhuban ke madhukunj me.n chalat viraha sameer
baaT takoo.n teri mai.n priye, jal jamunaa ke teer

Oops! Rafi won't do, you say? Has to be Mukesh? OK. But
I am too lazy to type. You have to look up the short version.
Same answer, though. :)

Not enough? You want a hint? You are making me work too hard.
Let me cut and paste!

A Mukesh song from a sensationally successful soundtrack of the
early 1960s, all the more remarkable because it was a B-budget film.
A desert-island calibre work from an unknown but worthy composer of
yesteryears, whose son is a well-known but hmmm.. composer today.

Short clue: Lines from the Mukesh version.

Song: saarangaa teri yaad me.n
Film: Saranga ('60)
Singer(s): Mukesh/Rafi tandem
Music: Sardar Malik

(18,3)

Widely anthologized in Mukesh compilations. Saranga
is available on cassette/CD. Don't know if the mutli-film
ones have the Rafi version. Look for HMV's single-film
cassette for the Rafi version and also the lovely solos
of Suman and Asha from the film. The film is supposed to
have many brief, lovely snippets sung by Hemant. Don't
know if the video is available.

Surajit: Out of curiosity, how did you pick the title song
over any of the others? Since all the songs are more or less
equally good.

Vandana Malkauns: I prefer Asha's song from the movie than
this song: "chalii re chalii re main to des paraayii".

Vijay: I have not heard the Rafi version, but getting the song
was not difficult. Getting the words of the Rafi version
(presuming the stanzas to have the same tune), I felt that the
lyrics are not as 'pat' in this case as for the Mukesh version.
Something not quite right about the meter, and I am not able
to put my finger on it.

==============================================
Songs 14 and 15 Saga songs

Bharat Vyas was uniquely suited to compress a complex, classic
work within the compass of a song, as he did with many of Kalidasa's.
It is unreasonable to represent them in this quiz, as they didn't get
much of a radio play due to their length. These two songs tell a
different kind of story. The stanzas perhaps appear all through
the film and portray the vicissitudes of the symbolic or real
characters. They were very successful on the radio, but given
their fragmentary picturization, I don't know if they had any TV
play. Manna Dey seems to be the automatic choice for such songs.

---------------------------------------------

phir aisi ghaDi aayi
ghan ghor ghaTaa chhaayi
ab diye kaa bhi dil lagaa kaampne
baDe zor se toofaan

tab diyaa dukhiyaara
vo bechaara besahaara
chalaa daav pe lagaane baazi praan ki,
baazi praan ki, baazi praan ki, baazi praan ki

Try as much as I did, I couldn't hide the identity of this
song! The struggle of the weak against oppression and tyranny
is indeed a very unequal one.

Short clue:
tab diyaa dukhiyaara
vo bechaara besahaara
chalaa daav pe lagaane baazi praan ki,
baazi praan ki, baazi praan ki, baazi praan ki

Song: nir_bal se la.Daayi balavaan ki
Film: Toofan Aur Diya ('56)
Singer(s): Manna Dey
Music: Vasant Desai

(18,5)

Available on Manna Dey Golden Collection. For the
full version, you need to check out the video and
collect the stanzas from across the film.

Vandana Malkauns: I fell in love with this song very
first time I heard. Nice composition and lyrics makes
song appealing in spite of mediocre singing. ... Even
if I sing it,it will sound better than Manna Dey....
( ofcourse IMHO, No flames please :))

Surajit: A nice soundtrack--I'm utterly charmed by
"merii chhoTiisii bahan," but I wish somebody other than
Lata had sung "piyaa te kahaa.N gayo," which strikes my
ear as a tad shrill.

pyaar ke jo taar band the, vo phir se hil gaye

kaT gayi vo dushmani, dos_ti ke vaar se

This S. Mohinder composition from an unreleased film of about
1960 tells the saga of two friends and their friendship: the
idyllic beginning, the breakup, and the reunion.

Short clue:
dono.n dost mil gaye, dil ke phool khil gaye
pyaar ke jo taar band the, vo phir se hil gaye

Song: chup zameen aasamaan, keh saki na ye zubaan
dil hilaanevaali do dosto.n ki daastaan
Film: Do Dost (circa '60; unreleased)
Singer(s): Manna Dey
Music: S. Mohinder

(4,10)

Available on Manna Dey Rare Gems two-cassette set.

Surajit: Yawn.

Lata: thaane chandan haar baNaalyu.n mhaare hirade su.n lagaalu.n
chunda.Di me.n lukaay thaane raakhu.n lii
Mukesh: gori chunda.Di lahar laharaaveli
laharaaveli chunda.Di lahar laharaaveli

When a lyrics request had come on RMIM sometime ago, I had difficulty
transcribing the song and gave up. A superior force came through, in
the form of our RMIMer from down under, David Windsor. (Where is he
these days?) My only exposure to the liltingly romantic Marwari
tongue.

Short clue:
gori chunda.Di lahar laharaaveli
laharaaveli chunda.Di lahar laharaaveli

Song: thaane kaajaliyo banaa lyu.n
Film: Veer Durgadas ('60)
Singer(s): Lata, Mukesh
Music: SN Tripathi

(12,10)

Haven't seen a regular recording. Is there one?

Nita: BTW the word is chunarii, IIRC

Surajit: Your *only* exposure to Marwari? Surely you've
heard Meera bhajans like "maaii mhaaro supaNaa maa
paDaNyaa re diinaanaath."

Vijay: Actually, the words you used for the short clue are
familiar. Without going to the long clue I knew it was Mukesh,
and even knew the tune for the lines given. Sadly, that was as
far as I got. I then searched Dejanews and found your David Windsor
posting that you refer to in the long clue, to get the mukhada.

mai.n ne ek din zaraa si jo kee masKhari
chalaa nazare.n ghumaake vo gusse bhari

Couldn't resist including a song which uses the word
"masKhari"!

I haven't been able to showcase any of the comic songs
Of Bharat Vyas in this quiz. For example, `Suvarna Sundari'
had the Rafi song "raam naam japanaaa, paraaya maal apanaa".
This one isn't a comic song, though. It is more like a teasing
song; a laavaNi perhaps?

(In the earlier post, instead of "ghumaake" I had given the
silly "milaake". In the meantime, I also found out that
"mas_Kharee" came from Arabic, via Persian. Quite commonly
used a word in North Karnataka and Maharashtra. Any other
Hindi song that uses the word?)

Short clue:
mai.n ne ek din zaraa si jo kee masKhari

Song: sai.nyaa jhooTho.n ka baDaa sartaaj nikalaa
Film: Do Aankhen Barah Hath ('57)
Singer(s): Lata
Music: Vasant Desai

(10,5)

Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje/Do Aankhen Barah Hath cassette/
CD is one of the best values there is.

Abhay: Another among the countless lovely songs murdered
on-screen by Sandhya!

Vandana Malkauns: LaavaNi part in your clue was slightly
misleading. I was thinking of song "main to chail chabilii
naar" (sant Dnyaneshwar) which sounds like a laavaNi.
AFAIR Sandhya is ( what is pherivaali - who sells several small
things , here it is kid's musical toys ) playing some instrument
in her hand and singing.

Surajit: Not a laavaNi; it lacks the characteristic orchestration.

dhvajaa se ye kha.De hue hai.n vrikshha dev_daar ke
dareeche ye gulaab ke, bageeche ye bahaar ke

ye kis kavi ki kalpanaa
ye kis kavi ki kalpanaa ka chamat_kaar hai

A great Mukesh song by a music director, desribed in
a recently posted article as a one-hit wonder, but
what a soundtrack! A very interesting structure of
stanzas, with the refrain (the repeated line) coming at
the end of each stanza. Later, Neeraj used it in
the 'Prem Pujari' song. Any earlier (or later)
instances?

Short clue:
ye kis kavi ki kalpanaa
ye kis kavi ki kalpanaa ka chamat_kaar hai

Song: ye kaun chitrakaar hai
Film: Boond Jo Ban Gayi Moti ('67)
Singer(s): Mukesh
Music: Satish Bhatia

(24,1)

By-film cassette/CD is available. Also in Mukesh anthologies.

Preeti: The earliest instance may be as early as "jaya jagadeesh hare"!

I can think of a few other songs with this format or a variant.
Songs with the simple 'BA CA DA...' format, other than the two
you mentioned, are
- intezaar aur abhi
- ye duniya agar mil bhi jaaye
- jinhe naaz hai hind par
- jab naam-e-mohabbat ... aji chhodo ye taraana
- abhi to main jawaan hoon
I'm not so sure about 'intezaar aur abhi'. The version I have
on tape is in this format, but I remember you writing once that
this is incomplete.

There are other variants - one common format being
BA
C'B'A
C"B"A...
- kaarvaan guzar gaya
- taareef karoon kya uski
are some examples, but I suspect many more can be found. Some
qawaalis have their refrains inserted after what appears to be
arbitrary length stanzas.

Surajit: The only other movie for which I have seen Satish Bhatia's
name listed as MD is MAALDAAR (1951). But I know nothing about that
soundtrack.

============================================
Songs 19 and 20: Songwriter as social activist

Poets interested in social change have broadly speaking
two approaches. Some derive the message by appealing to
abstract principles, such as justice; many songs of Sahir
and Majrooh belong to this category. The alternative is
to tap into a part of the tradition itself to draw support
for the desired change. Bharat Vyas appears to prefer the
second approach.

kaun hai oonchaa kaun hai neechaa
sab me.n vo hi samaayaa
bhed bhaav ke jhooTe bharam me.n
ye maanav bharamaayaa

Here, the ideas of a Maharashtrian saintly figure are used to
propagate enLIGHTenment.

Short clue:
kaun hai oonchaa kaun hai neechaa
sab me.n vo hi samaayaa

Song: jyot se jyot jagaate chalo
Film: Sant Gyaneshwar ('64)
Singer(s): Mukesh/Lata tandem
Music: Laxmikant-Pyarelal

(4,7)

Sant Gyaneshwar/Sati Savitri cassette/CD.

Abhay: With so many films to choose from, why two
songs from the same film?

Vijay: Given the clues in the long version, one zeroes
in on the song, and when the lyrics fit the meter, the
song is confirmed. I have not heard this stanza before.

(stanza)

naari me.n doshh nikaalegaa
sati par vishvaas nahi.n karate
pati unhe.n agni me.n Daalegaa

naari par laanchhan jvaalaa ki lapaTe hongee poorNa nahi.n

Quite daringly written refrain (the one you have to supply!).
I wonder if the BJP/VHP/SS hooligans are aware of it, but
the setting for this song is perhaps the earliest significant
use in world literature of the flashback technique. In the
Valmiki version, most of the story is presented as sung by
Lava and Kusha in Rama's court. One convenient way for the
English-knowing ones among the hooligans to correct their
ignorance would be by reading the excellent "abridged" (at
600+ pages!) translation of Valmiki Ramayan by Arshia Sattar
(Viking 1996).
(Note: laanchhan: disfiguring mark, stigma, aspersion;
lapaT: toungue of flame, blast of fire or heat)

Short clue: Just the stanza, omitting the prelude.

Song: bhaarat ke seetaao.n ke dukhaDe
jab tak honge choorNa nahi.n
he raam tumhaare raamaayaN ho
tab tak sampoorNa nahi.n
Film: Sampoorna Ramayan ('61)
Singer(s): Lata, Asha
Music: Vasant Desai

(4,4)

Haven't come across the audio for Sampoorna Ramayan,
a pity. Fortunately, video is avaialable.

Surajit: I love the word "sampuurNa"--it sounds so compleat. :-)

Interesting answer(s):

mehaa barase, nainaa tarase
pyaasaa manavaa tujh ko pukaare
ancharaa bheege, angiyaa bheege
jiyaraa me.n jalate angaare

Same story, different film, same music director, different kind of
song. My only complaint about the song is that it is too short;
only one stanza. I have been hoping that it shows up in the FITB
series. But, perhaps there is no missing stanza even in the film
version.

Song: Dar laage garaje badaravaa
Film: Ram Rajya ('67)
Singer(s): Lata
Music: Vasant Desai

(9,7)

Available in anthologies for Lata, classical songs from
films, and Vasant Desai.

Abhay: An awesome song! It is indeed a pity it is so short.
From what I remember of film (I saw it years ago!), the film
version too has only the one antaraa.

Vijay: The words looked familiar but the song eluded recollection.
The complaint that the song is too short, plus 'similar story line'
hint are the clues that get me to the right song.

Surajit: I have one recording where the Sur-Malhar of the song
abruptly gives way to a Puriya-Dhanashree coda on the santoor.
Gives some credence to the giit kosh listing of this song as
one part of a three-part raag maalaa.

Vish: The one thing that jumps out immediately is the fact that
the RAAM RAAJYA song in the film does not have its own stand-alone
identity. It is part of a much longer "darbaar" presentation.
And it is just a little longer than the LP version (which I
happen to have on tape). Don't know if an EP was made, but it
is somewhat unlikely that the EP version would be longer. Had
this been a stand-alone song on the other hand, the likelihood of
an extra verse would have been greater.

Geeta: koyaliyaa kuhu kuhu bole
kaliyo.n ne ghunghat khole
Hemant: kaliyo.n se kahe ek bha.nvaraa
dil de do hole hole
Geeta: haT mere sanam
mujhe laage sharam

Stereotypes are so strong that we tend to be surprised
when Bharat Vyas is the lyricist for a film with an English
word as the name!

Short clue:
koyaliyaa kuhu kuhu bole
kaliyo.n ne ghunghat khole
kaliyo.n se kahe ek bha.nvaraa
dil de do hole hole

Song: tum aur ham, bhool ke Gham
gaaye pyar bhare sar_gam
Film: Fashion ('57)
Singer(s): Geeta, Hemant
Music: Hemant

(5,6)

Available on Fashion/Hill Station cassette/CD.

Vijay: Again, the words look familiar, but the song refuses to
come to mind. The singer info in the long clue does the trick.

Surajit: Quite a mediocre song, lyrically and musically. The
lines are as cliched as the melody. Is a rhyme of the caliber
"sanam/sharam" supposed to make me think more highly of Bharat
Vyas?

----------------------------------------------

ankhiyaa.n neeli aur nasheeli
dil me.n bas gayi vo lajeeli
chaandani si mad_bhari thi
gagan se utari pari thi
yaad hai vo din suhaana
yaad hai vo din suhaana, vo suhaani shaam

There was some question whether the words were "vo lajeeli"
or "chhail chhabeeli". From my radio days, I did remember
it as "vo chhabeeli", but the recording does have it as given.

Short clue:
ankhiyaa.n neeli aur nasheeli
dil me.n bas gayi vo lajeeli

Song: nain ka chain chura kar le gayi
Film: Chandramukhi ('60)
Singer(s): Mukesh
Music: SN Tripathi

(5,7)

The HMV cassette Vintage Favourites: Mukesh has this song.

Surajit: Thanks to Vandana Vidwans. I still don't know the song,
but she contributed it for FITB, so I remembered this stanza!

Songs 24 and 25 Men in their dark times

Should be women rather! Two wonderful sad songs, both by
Lata. Also, both are repeats in terms of films. The earlier
songs are the better-known ones. I like these two much better,
and one is a masterpiece.

hil_milaa rahaa hriday, nayan ki putaliyaa.n hili
aansuo.n ki dhaar aaj baadalo.n si jhar chali

One of those songs where all elements click. Bharat Vyas:
SN Tripathi: Lata.

(Note: putalee is pupil)

Short clue:
bheekh maangate nayan, inhe suhaas do
is niraash kaampate hriday ko aash do

Song: saanjh ho gayi prabhu tumhi prakaash do
Film: Jai Chittod ('61)
Singer(s): Lata
Music: SN Tripathi

(2,5)

Not available on any regular releases, to my knowledge.

Hema: You have translated "putlii" as pupil. It should be
eyeball. pupil is a thin covering over the cornea if
I remember rightly. When you go for an eye test, they
dilate the pupils so as to get a good measurement of
the curvature of the cornea. I could be wrong about
the reasoning for dilation, it doesn't make much
sense. But putlii is surely eyeball.

One of the best of Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Unusual verbal
construction in the opening line.

Song: Khabar mori naa leeni re bahut din beete
Film: Sant Gyaneshwar ('64)

Lata: aaj leharo.n me.n jaadoo ka sangeet hai

I get confused between two Talat-Lata duets that came
at about the same time, both composed by Vasant Desai.
One was written by Pradeep and went "o dildaar, bolo ek
baar, kyaa meraa pyaar pasand hai tumhe.n". This is the
other one.

Song: Tim Tim Tim, taaro.n ke deep jale
Film: Mausi ('58)
Singer(s): Lata, Talat

Available in Talat duets Golden Collection.

Surajit: Both songs are equally forgettable.

Another Laxmikant-Pyarelal song Lata need not be ashamed
of singing in concerts! Seems to be thought well of by
aficionados of semiclassical songs as being one of the
better Yaman compositions.

Short clue:

Song: jeevan Dor tumhi sang baandhi
Film: Sati Savitri ('64)
Singer(s): Lata
Music: Laxmikant-Pyarelal

Sati Savitri/Sant Gyaneshwar cassette/CD.

mature, mellow, sweet, full-bodied.

Musically, well, it is a Hridayanath composition.

Song: mai.n to jaaoongi re us paar
Film: Chani ('77)

Lata: o pardesi bhool na jaanaa

Rafi: dil ye hamaara tu ne na jaanaa

The film had four lyricists, others being Hasrat Jaipuri,
Indeewar and Nirupa Roy chipping in with a song! The
most famous song of the film was by Bharat Vyas (am I
supposed to add, "of course"?!). Another music director
who had his first big hit with Bharat Vyas's lyrics. The
music director's name is given as K.V. Shah in some HMV
recordings.

Song: chaahe paas ho chaahe door ho

Songs 30 and 31 How often can a word be used?

I remember a thread on RMIM long ago, about songs in
which a particular word (and its grammatical variants)
was repeated surprisingly many times. These two songs
would be strong candidates.
-------------------------------------------
30
pehali kiran to chhoo kar ke phool chaman ka khil jaata
ek pyar ke chumban se jaD patthar bhi hil jaata

jug jug se pyase chaatak ko
jug jug se pyase chaatak ko ek boond ki aas

Title song of the film that is supposed to be India's
first cinemascope and colour film. Masterly composition
by Vasant Desai with all his trademarks, aalaap, chorus,
and waltzing violins.

Short clue:
pehali kiran to chhoo kar ke phool chaman ka khil jaata
ek pyar ke chumban se jaD patthar bhi hil jaata

Song: kya dharati aur kya aakaash
sab ko pyar ki pyaas
Film: Pyar Ki Pyas ('61)
Singer(s): Lata, Rafi, chorus
Music: Vasant Desai

The repeated word is "pyaas" and its variations.

(5,7)

The Vasant Desai compilation cassette had only one part of
the song. I am told that the recent CD release of the film
has the complete song. A bad video copy is in circulation.

Surajit: Masterly composition? It's loud, shrill, and
melodramatic in every respect.

Abhay: A song I can't stand, especially the bits where the
chorus wails "pyaar ki pyaas, pyaar ki pyaas..."

.. .. .. ... adhoori

Song: aadhaa hai chandrama raat aadhi
Film: Navrang ('59)
Singer(s): Mahendra Kapoor, Asha
Music: C. Ramchandra

The repeated word is, of course, "aadhaa". Someone
had actually counted the number of occurrences to be
in the mid-30s. Technically, there is some information
in the long clue that is not there in the short clue,
because of the introduction to the subgroup.

(15,3)

Widely available in by-film cassettes and Asha duet
compilations.

Surajit's answer: pyaas...

He adds: The way I cracked these was usually by humming the
fragment you had provided and carrying it forward to the sthaayi.
Hence I've reproduced that here by providing the next couple lines.

In some cases this would have meant replicating lines that you
did provide in the long version, and in those cases I've just
provided the sthaayi.

And in some other cases it has meant that I don't mention the
sthaayi at all: 8, 10, 17, and notoriously, 31. If you don't give
me credit for them, I'll scream blue murder. I've provided enough
of the subsequent words to prove that I know the song you have in
mind. So there.

Arunabha: This really proves your point . Just with
the one word "adhoorii" one can identify the song, and
that does go to show how well entrenched the song is
in our minds. Though of course I will give only one
part of that credit to the lyricist.

Vandana Malkauns: The best ever clue in RJGK's ( I read or
took aprt so far ) is one word.

Malini: We might also have got this one without her
[Malini's mother] help. But she was the first one to get.
While we were still explaining to her your clueing method,
she cracked it.

Surajit: "adhuurii" is a clue one either cracks rightaway or
doesn't crack. Counting dots on the monitor isn't gonna help.

too. Here is a stanza.

Song: apani piya ki mai.n to bani re joganiyaa

The big-time success of `Saranga' did lead to a few
films in the 1960s with Bharat Vyas-Sardar Malik
combination. From the title of the film, it is a
mythological, but the song has the kind of elegance
one associates with, say, a Sahir-N. Dutta-Rafi song.
Lyrically, the song is even one up on the usual filmsong
extension of the ghazal structure: three rhyming lines
and then the radeef-kaafiyaa line!

Song: ham ne kya pyar kiya
pyar ka badalaa na mila
Film: Nag Mohini ('63)

Songs 34 and 35 Lyrics provide the denouement

I know of two films where the final resoultion of the
central dramatic tension is carried out purely through
the lyrics of a song.
--------------------------------------------
34
Rafi: ye to jug jug ki hai pyaas
jise bha.nvaraa bujhaaye, kali kali paas jaaye
kare poori adhoori vo aas
Lata: ras ke lobhi chain na paaye

A dumb shepherd gets to marry the intellectually arrogant
Princess, but is denied consummation. He finds the hidden
reserves in himself with the help of his faithful companion
and emerges as the greatest poet ever. The princess changes
her mind now, of course, but he is willing to treat her only
as his guru and claims his rights to a life of free love. The
king sets up a debate through poetry to choose the winning
party. Very ingeniously constucted lyrics. Like Sahir's
lyrics for `Didi', but goes through more rounds.

Short clue:
ye to jug jug ki hai pyaas
jise bha.nvaraa bujhaaye, kali kali paas jaaye
kare poori adhoori vo aas

Song: un par kaun kare ji vishvaas
Film: Kavi Kalidas ('59)
Singer(s): Lata, Rafi
Music: SN Tripathi

(4,3)

I have seen a partial version on a pirate cassette
of Rafi-Lata duets. Best bet is the video of the film,
the only source for complete version. The Kavi Kalidas
CD omits this song.

Comments:

Arunabha: that last song in Kavi Kalidas !
What's the name ??

Hema: Don't expect me to answer that. I don't even
know that such a movie exists!

Snehal: I can sing this but mukhada is eluding. You should
still count such cases in your statistics as your aim to
collect data on "awareness"

Vandana Malkauns: Not a single song from "Kavi Kalidas"? But
then I don't no all the lyrics byheart and no time to listen to CD.

In my first draft of the quiz, this song was going to
provide the clue no. 31, with just

Film: Navrang ('59)
Singer(s): Manna Dey, Asha
Music: C. Ramchandra

Widely available: Navrang cassette/CD, Manna Dey
duets, etc.

Arunabha: I love the way an echo effect is created
occasionally on the word "kahaa.N" . The interludes
(and picturization with all those gigantic bells) is
somewhat overdone though.

Vandana Malkauns: Too many malkauns based songs in

Surajit: I think "mohinii" would have been a more
fair one-word clue than the one you chose.

Since I have asked you to guess a whole song from
just one word, I think to be fair to you folks, I
should take on the opposite.burden for some song!
Here's nearly the entire song. You just provide
the opneing words! Lata of 1990s has re-sung the
song after nearly 40 years. You can still feel
the beauty of the tune.

Song: jai bhaarati, vande bhaarati
Film: Jagaduru Shankaracharya ('55)
Singer(s): Manna Dey and chorus in film/
Lata and chorus in the version song
Music: Avinash Vyas

(0,4)

Last year or so, HMV came out with a cassette titled
'Mere Vatan Ke Logo', consisting of patriotic songs,
bith film and non-film. Much of it was standard fare,
but it had "jai bhaarati, vande bhaarati" sung by Lata
and chorus, from a mid-1950s film 'Jagaduru Shankaracharya',
written by Bharat Vyas and composed by Avinash Vyas. The
voice is of a much older Lata. According to Geet Kosh, in
the film, the song is rendered by Manna Dey and chorus;
there is no mention of a version by Lata. So, it looks
like it is a cover (verson song) sung by Lata! Thanks to
Vish for pointing it out.

There is a Telugu song by Ghantasala "evarivo, neevu evarivo" which not
only means the same thing ("Who might you be") but also has the same
tune, at least in the mukhada. Interesting. Not sure about the film and
year of the Telugu song, but given CR's south indian association would
not be surprised to see he was involved in that song, too.
After n postings by Ashok & other RMIMers, this RJGK finally gave me
cause and opportunity to rent the Stree video and see for myself what
everyone has been talking about. Quite impressed. But, it did not have
the other version of this song. When does that occur?

I just love this clue, with the set of dots and the single word. No wonder we
tip our hats off to you, Ashok.

Here's a take off quiz from the above.

I guess the most oft-repeated words - it is a set of two words - in a song are
from this Lata/Rafi duet from 1970. In the mukhada consisting of a total of 14
words, these two supply 8 of the 14. Counting the times the mukhada line is
repeated in the song, the total goes beyond 50 very easily; I've tried to count
the exact number many times, but never could keep my concentration on counting
beyond the first time of the mukhada.

Our RMIMers are invited to crack the above song, in a one question quiz. :))

Intentionally not supplying the MD's name, since that would automatically
short-list the films and give away the answer. But the 8/14 hint in the
mukhada should lead you in the right direction.

The 12-CD set of Binaca Geet Mala has it; it was the top most song of 1957.
(The video is also available.)

Talking about movies unbelievable to exist, there is a film titled "Kavi
Sammelan" from 1972, which starred the famous poets, like Dinkar, Kaka
Hathrasi, Neeraj, Balkavi Bairaagi, and many more.

Does anybody know if a video of this film is available?

Happy listenings.

: There is a Telugu song by Ghantasala "evarivo, neevu evarivo" which not
: only means the same thing ("Who might you be") but also has the same
: tune, at least in the mukhada. Interesting. Not sure about the film and
: year of the Telugu song, but given CR's south indian association would
: not be surprised to see he was involved in that song, too.

The Telugu version of the song: "evarivO, neeveverivO!", written by none
other than the famous poet "SriSri" was inspired by CR's above tune. The
MD for Telugu version was T. Chalapati Rao. And the film is: "punarjanma"
(1963).

there is a Sahir song which goes
dil me.n kisii ke pyaar kaa jalataa huaa diyaa
duniyaa.N kii aa.Ndhiyo.n se bhalaa yah bujhegaa kyaa
from Ek Mahal ho sapno ka, AFAIK. The sentiment in the opening lines,
esp the second, seems remarkably similar to me. The Sahir song is dated
1980.

Another song which has the word "adhoori" in its stanza is
phir miloge kabhi is baat kaa vaadaa kar lo
from Yeh raat phir na aayegi. Lyrics by SH Bihari.

In response to my above post, Ikram came up with a few very interesting answers
and also a suggestion that I am taking up on.

And that is providing another tier of clue for the above quiz, although I am
doing that with a "crazy heart".

I also forgot to add initially: please email the answers to me, do not post
them on the net.

Happy listenings.
