This is a question that has interested me although I haven't necessarily made
much headway in getting definitive answers.
In my own personal collection, the oldest album I have in stereo is JHANAK
JHANAK PAYAL BAJE. Curiousy enough another of V.Shantaram's movies JAL BIN
MANCHALI NRITYA BIN BIJLI is also in "total" stereo. The "total" I have put in
inverted commas as it would appear to be true stereo as opposed to
"electronically reprocessed for stereo play"...examples of the latter being
DAAG(Rajesh Khanna), SAUDAGAR(Amitabh Bachchan) and numerous other seventies
movies.
DASTAAN(Dilip Kumar) is a good example of stereo but CHAMBAL KI KASAM(Raaj
Kumar) appears to be forced and you can detect the technician physically
twirling the knobs from left speaker to the right to give the effect of
stereo...sadly he ruins a wonderful song like Simti Hui Yeh Ghadiyan. Raj
Kapoors MERA NAAM JOKER was also electronically reprocessed and not a very good
job was made of it sadly.
The Mukesh album of ghazals penned by Jan Nisar Akhtar and composed by Khayyam
is a good example of non-film stereo as is the Mohd.Rafi/Begum Akhtar/Kaifi
Azmi album of Ghalib ghazals composed again by Khayyam.
Then again there were good examples in the late 70s which had I believe 16
track stereo sound like KHUDDAR and RAZIA SULTAN.
A curiosity of sorts was the re-release of KLSaigals works in Total
Stereo...where the voice was retained and new orchestration overplayed...this
on 1980 was quite a revelation but now it is passe.

For an LP / EP to be in in STEREO, two grooves have to be cut, one on
each
on the left and right of the track - and not at the base. While,
the front & back cover of records may state anything (e.g.: "From the
original soundtrack, on all pre-60s film, but are all from 78 rpms),
the prefix of LP # is the one which is assigned by the production and
is more reliable.
To the best of my recollection, the first LP, with dual channels was
for the film: Jal Bin Machali (1971). The LP # prefix is S/MOCE
(wherein S stands for Stereo).
One more word on this item. LPs / CDs / Tapes which were issued, many
years later than the original release of the film and the soundtrack
was
transferred either from the release positive print or the video
tape,
cann't be in stereo (only Y-Jack two tracks). The reason is fairly
simple.
All films - released on 35 mm print (Indian, American or any where
else)
can have only one track to print the sound.
Only on 70mm print, it is possible to add the 2nd track, by reducing
the
image size by 2 mm.
CAUTION: This info. is entirely from my own analysis, gathered from
bits
and pieces of info. from various sources. However, I am
100%
sure that it is accurate.

QUESTION FOR MR. BHAGWANT
=========================
Can you please give the Record #s or the titles of Saigal's LPs,
which were issued in TOTAL STEREO. Fortunetly, I may not have
them, but just in case there are any, I will have to find
alternate source.

1971 seems a bit late but you may be right. I had guessed it would be mid
60s.

Movie may be mono but the audio released could be stereo (recorded on 2
tracks)
The first stereo LP of Hindi film songs was for 'Jal Bin Machhali
Nritya Bin Bijlee' 1971
Gurcharan
I will re-state it. LPs made from soundtracks transferred from
Release Positive Prints or Video Tapes can't be in Stereo
(only Y-Jack Stereo).
For films released after 1971
=============================
Yes, LPs can be in Stereo, but the Film Print will be in Mono only

What year was Hridaynath / Lata's "Chalaa Vaahii Des" released? I
distinctly remember being bowled over by the effects of the stereo
recording.
As for JBMNBB, I believe the movie was originally shot in 35 MM but was
blown up to 70 MM when it was re-released in the 1980s to coincide with
the re-opening of Shantaram's theater in Bombay, "Plaza".
